I'm out, I need longer. Nicodemus told her and Cass found herself biting her lower lip in frustration. Maybe she shouldn't have been doing so much duck-shooting with him. Ten had been more than enough, but with another faltering failure on her part as she struck out with her blade, it seemed they were down to eight.

Still not a bad number, but Cass as looking a bit more annoyed than upset by the shadows at this point in time.

Another shadow got a duck and disappeared into the forest. The two shadow seemed to look at each other before falling back, disappearing quickly. Aria dismissed her weapon, jamming the totem-form back into the sheath on her leg. "Damnit!" She cursed, shaking her head. "Come on, Cass. Let's go. There's no point in chasing them down now."

Aria began to walk up the path, stopping to turn and look at Cass. "Also? Don't mention this to anyone else. If the rest of the Council catches word of this, it's possible that they'll try to shut this place down. Or clean it out."

Cass seemed annoyed as well, but a quick check over seemed to deem her unscathed by the little zerg-rush that had just happened. She wrapped the chain of her weapon around her waist before she dismissed him, the weight settling there easily.

"Not like I didn't catch plenty..just...annoying.." she mumbled, before she looked back into the trees. "Is Beau gonna be al-.." she cut off when Aria turned to face her, standing up just a bit straighter and giving the older woman her full attention.

"Got it. I won't say a thing to anybody about just happned."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 17, 2012 8:47 pm

"Good." Aria turned and began to lead the way forward. "With shadowlings in the area, the hunting dogs are going to be useless. Beau is probably in a blind panic right about now. With luck she'll come to and find her way back home, or else-" Aria caught herself, bringing herself up short to glance towards the forest as if she heard something. Cass seemed to like Beau. Better not mention that. "Or else she'll be stuck outside for awhile," she finished. "Beau's a good dog though. A bit spoiled, but she'll survive."

Maybe. Now was also not a good time to tell Cass that Beau was the eighteenth in a long line of hunting dogs named Beau. Lance liked that name. There was something about the amount of vowels that tickled his fancy.

Aria stopped as soon as they were within sight of the cabin. "Speak of the devil..."

"Heeey! You ladies catch something good?" Lance called, waving from his position on the porch. "Great! I'm starving!"

"Well, I hope she comes back soon..."

Yeah, Cass might have actually cried if she'd known that Beau was one of eighteen. After all, Beau had just become her favorite dog in the world, she didn't want to lose that in one afternoon of shooting ducks.

Aria's 'speak of the devil' puzzled Cass for a moment as she'd been thinking about the dog and the man on the porch was not a lab that she wanted to harass with all the lovings. It was a- "Hey Unicorn!" she greeted, waving back at him. The fact he was there because there was food seemed to not surprise her at all, however.

"I got t- eight ducks!" she corrected herself quickly. After all, they only had eight ducks with them, no need to explain where two of them had gone. Cass, unlike Aria, didn't stop as she approached the cabin at the sight of Lance - though if he asked about his dog....... shoot, she didn't want to lie, but she'd promised Aria, and then there was...

Don'taskdon'task...

"Starving? Maybe if you're good I'll share." she teased.

Lance put on a hurt expression. "Good? Aw, c'mon Cass. You know I'm the very epitome of goo- I saw that Aria." The woman in question held up her hand, showing that she was unarmed save for the ducks she carried. Lance turned his attention back to Cass, leaning forward. "Ahh, you shot them yourself? Nicely done! I'd invite you inside in order to show you how to prepare them, but there's a teensy little problem."

The door was right behind him. And Lance was blocking it. What could it be?

"I did! It was pretty good target practice for Nicodemus."

She couldn't help but laugh at Lance's description of himself. "Then you won't have a problem, right?" Cass teased, tapping him on the forehead in a somewhat playful manner, before she looked to the door that he was blocking.

Then back to him.

Then back to the door.

She narrowed her eyes a bit. "..Either you broke something or there are a bunch of people in there." she assessed. Because somehow that seemed to be the most logical response to things.

Lance beamed at Cass. "I knew it! You look like you're a pretty good shot Cass, what with eight in your bag. Figuratively speaking, of course." He gestured towards the ducks, glancing at Cass a second time. Could he...? No.

At her assessment, Lance grinned. "This time? Nah. I didn't lock myself out either. To be honest..." His grin faded as he glanced down. The hunter hoisted his mist coat up, revealing a form coated in mud and huddling under his chair. His voice grew firm as he spoke, "To be honest Beau won't let me move. Something spooked her good. What happened?"

Beneath the chair the cowering form let out a long whine. She attempted to scramble back, stopping when the chair prevented her progress back.

"I didn't do too bad. I'll do better with the accuracy of my shots next time. Use less ammo." She pat the chain on her waist. "Nicodemus says it's a good precaution just in case." she explained.

It looked like her guess as to why they couldn't head inside just yet was because of the bestwiddlepuppyinthewholewideworldohyesyouisyesyouis curled up underneath Lance's chair.

"Heyyyy Beau!" Cass greeted as she slowly sunk down to her knees, slowly extending her hand towards the spooked pup - but not forcing it. Last thing she needed was to be bitten. "Hey baby girl, c'mere~" she urged, "It's alright, baby girl, it's just me." After a moment, Cass took one of the duck bunches and set it near so the lab could sniff that as well. "Yeahhh, remember these?"

Answering Lance's question? NOPE. Though she'd been really tempted to just answer 'BEAR'. Probably not wise to lie when she didn't know what kind of wildlife was around besides 'Hurr, I have ducks'.

Lance drummed his fingers on the armrest, watching Cass. While he normally didn't mind a woman kneeling in front of him, this particular context resulted in irritation. "Beau is a good girl. One of the best I've ever trained. Now she's scared and won't budge from under my chair. Something had to have happened. I want to know what."

As the ducks were offered, Beau gave another pained whine and tried to scoot back further. The dog jostled the chair, shrinking back down as soon as she encountered resistance before giving another pained whine. "What did you do?"

"She didn't do anything," Aria cut in, striding forward. She rested one hand on the armrest, touching his arm. "Beau just needs to rest and calm down. But not here. You're a bit... in the way of things. We're going to lift you up and try to get Beau out from under you, move you to another place, then let her go back under until she feels better."

"Cass?" Aria turned her attention to the trainee. "I'm going to lift Lance up. Do you feel comfortable pulling Beau out? There's a chance she might bite..."

Cass looked up at Lance, knitting her brows together as she was accused of being the source of Beau's cowering underneath the chair. However, she kept her jaw firmly set and didn't snap back at him out of her own irritation. It was kind of hard to keep a promise when someone else was somewhat interrogating you about it.

She looked away before Aria cut on. Thank you, Aria, for saving little kitten from the horrendously awkward situation.

"Well, unfortunately I'm not strong enough to pick Lance up." she flexed her arms pointlessly. "But I think I'll be alright with Beau. I've handled some nastier things than a dog that might bite." she assured. "As long as she doesn't go for my face, I'll be fine." Because the last thing they needed was a hunter who was maimed in the face.

That and Cass would likely drop Beau out of being startled by it even if Nicodemus had her covered. Never the less, Cass scooted the ducks away from her before shifting into a position that was easier to move in. However, as she did so she glanced up towards Lance for a moment.

"Sorry....." her voice was quiet, not really giving much context for why she was apologizing. It might have been the only thing he'd get out of her on this front for a while.

Having Aria right there watching both of them with a close eye most likely did not make the situation any easier. Either way, two and two together came and clicked in Lance's head. He looked from the hunter to the trainee and back again before hazarding a guess. "Bear and cubs?"

"Nope. Coyote." Aria grabbed hold of the armest of Lance's chair and hauled up on it, forcing a startled curse from him before he grabbed hold of her to steady himself.

With her safety hidey-hole gone, Beau stood up in an attempt to press herself further back against the chair. Cass easily grabbed the dog and pulled her back, freeing her from out from under the chair. For the moment, at least. As soon as Aria set Lance back down the dog wiggled free of Cass' grip and darted back towards Lance.

At least the dog decided to jump up onto Lance's lap instead, muddy paws and all. "Hey girl, shhh it's okay," he cooed, hugging the dog as she attempted to smush her face into his chest. He ruffled the dog's fur, tossing his head towards the door. "Come on. Let's head inside and I'll show you how to prepare the ducks. Or," he corrected himself, "I'll tell you how to do it and walk you though the process that way. Looks like my hands are going to be occupied."

"Or," Aria broke in, "We can place the ducks in the freezer and take care of the coyotes. They aren't supposed to be in this area, and the sooner we take them out..." The coyotes in question were not the usual kind of coyote, if the look Aria was giving Cass was any indication. "It's your choice."

Cass tried to not look puzzled. Were they speaking code at each other? The 'hush hush' code? She'd have to ask Aria about it later. It seemed, at least, Beau was safe in her daddykins arms and all her woes would be cleared out soon enough.

"Well," Cass answered, "Can you shoot Coyotes with that gun?" she inquired. "If not, I can go make a run with Nicodemus for more target practice. Maybe work on that distance thing you were telling me about earlier. Get a better grip on dual wielding." She gave it a moment before adding, "Unless you wouldn't like me to do something like that unsupervised. I understand that completely."

Aria had been calling the shots (literally) for Cass earlier because of FLAMETHROWER. If that was still an issue, Cass was still the one equipped for it. "Either way, I think a small clear out is in order before ducks, sadly." Seriously, she was hungry. She hadn't eaten properly in a while.
PostPosted: Wed Jun 20, 2012 10:04 pm

Aria shook her head, waving towards the cabin. "This particular rifle caliber is more suited for water fowl than coyotes. I'm going to go switch it out for a more... specific rifle."

"If you're sure, go ahead and run the ducks inside. Just place them on the counter -- I think Draven is around to give a hand with cleaning them, and we have more than enough to share." She opened the door behind Lance, allowing the assistant to go in first before following after.

The look on her face was briefly puzzled. If Aria didn't mean the trapping gun, she wasn't sure what other runic varieties were available. Then again, she was only a trainee...

"Yes Ma'am!" Cass was at full attention now, standing up a bit straighter. "I'm sure if I don't share a bit anyways it won't all get eaten before frostbite or whatever anyways." she agreed before she took up both of the bound bundles of ducks and headed inside after Lance and Aria.

After setting them on the counter, Cass went back outside, resummoning Nicodemus to start her hunt for the 'Coyotes'.

The easiest point to track back to was where they'd first been rushed by the shadowlings, and it seemed like one had come back to sniff around some more, in case the handouts returned. Cass didn't have any handouts for it though, simply moving in a calm manner to strike it. Keep her head calm, slice.

The pain of Nicodemus slicing through its shadowy form sent the shadow running away from her, however, and Cass had to go running to hunt it down again. Damn things.
