Good. That worked, he supposed. No, it worked nicely, for Vetis was still sore. Yet, he wouldn't mind carrying his mate, not at all. Simply, this was easier.

"Stay here."

Where else would Hugin go? He stood there, struggling briefly. What should he do? He was so... unsure. He was scared to lose sight of Hugin, he realized. He had been less scared the day before, determined to help his mate. Today, though, Hugin was looking better, a bit, and now the paranoia was kicking in. If he left would this be the last time he saw Hugin? What would his last words be? Fear struck him, hard, and he swallowed thickly, shuddering.

"I love you." His voice trembled, but he didn't stay long enough for Hugin to question it, fleeing the cave and heading for berries.

"Love you too," Hugin said softly, though from the sound of the hasty retreat Vetis had taken he had probably gotten out of hearing range long before the first syllable had left his lips.

He sighed softly, shifting on the ground. He could hear the fear in Vetis' voice, knew it for what it was because that fear cut into his heart like a knife. Vetis had always kept a close eye on him in a protective sort of way, but he'd never hovered like that before, as though terrified to leave him.

He didn't see there being an end to that behavior in the foreseeable future, either.

Well, at least he was forewarned, he didn't mind being patient. And right now he wouldn't mind being hovered over at all, but life went on and bodies made their annoying demands that messed with what the heart wanted.

He was unsure what to do as he grabbed berries, using his tail to hold them, his long tail curled into a ball to support the berries. He had to stop himself from flying back to the cave in a huff, biting back his fears with a firm growl. He needed to focus on the males needs, not his worries.

A half dead Hugin flashed into his head, sending him jerking backwards, berries falling to the ground in a faint, rhythmic thumping sound. He was so scared, so afraid, so ashamed. It took that moment right there to send the large man crumbling to the ground, shoulders trembling as quiet sobs finally released.

When Vetis returned it had been late. He had not meant to take so long, but he returned with berries and his mouth carrying leaves, something to show for the time. "Hugin." He said to warn his mate he was there, placing the berries before Hugin and then settling nearby, sparkles heavily infecting the air around him, something that happened whenever he was incredibly upset.

“What happened? What’s wrong,” Hugin asked, voice sharper and a lot stronger than it had been up until this point. He didn’t even need that charged feeling in the air that he’d come to associate with Vetis’ sparkles; his voice alone was so thick and layered with emotions that Hugin feared the worst!

In his distress the injured male fought with his body and struggled to get up. With a gasp of pain he succeeded in pushing his body into a sitting position. Muscles and bone screamed at him, and he knew that if he tried to actually move he’d fall right back down to the ground again.

And somehow he managed to avoid squishing any of the berries in front of him.

Hugin’s entire body was trembling from the combination of emotion and effort it took to remain upright. “What’s wrong, Vetis,” he asked again, voice insistent and much stronger than his body at the moment.

Vetis had been about to take the chance to nap, but stopped as his mate suddenly seemed to sharply question him, standing. Vetis immediately came to Hugin's side, using his paw to slip under the males paws to attempt to make him fall back down, quickly moving so when Hugin did fall he would fall in soft fur instead of the hard ground.

With this secured, his ears pinned backwards, voice deep as always, yet it seemed slightly deeper, worried. "Don't be so careless." He whispered, giving into his emotions, burying his face into his mates chest. "Why must the one I love keep allowing himself and the earth to hurt him? If only I could lock you away from danger, but I know you would never stand for that." His voice trembled, something so rare before his mate.

"I am so afraid." He never spoke of his fears and worries, because it would frighten his mate he feared. Still, he could not stop himself from trembling, giving in. "What if I hadn't found you when I did? What if I lost you? If only I didn't let you leave by yourself."

Hugin felt a curious twinge when Vetis swept his paws out from under him. But his muscles were all so sore and beat up, he dismissed the pain as being another one in countless others. There was more important things to deal with right now.

“No, I wouldn’t,” he said into his mate’s soft fur. “Because you’d have to lock yourself up with me, and I couldn’t stand to have you penned in like that when you have so much energy and life in you.” Hugin signed and tried to wiggle just a little closer, where the warmth and comfort he got from being so close to Vetis made his pain fade away so that he could ignore it.

“You can’t keep asking yourself those questions, Love,” he said. “You can “what it” yourself to death, and it won’t change what happened. The fact is you did find me and I’m going to be alright. Neither of us could have predicted that storm, it came up so suddenly, and if it hadn’t then nothing would have gone wrong. Please don’t worry so much, it hurts when I can feel your pain and I can’t fix it,” he begged into the fur. He could feel a bit of blood from his eyes stain his mate’s fur and tried to calm himself so the flow would ebb.

While he couldn't help the shivers as his body began to panic, it was Hugin's soft words that seemed to calm him long enough. His body quit its twitching and shuddering, eyes still closed until he felt blood. Reaching forward, he licked the metallic blood from his mates eyes,

"I love you." He whispered, burrowing his face into his mates warmth. "I love you more than a million suns. This.... I.... I won't let this happen again." His voice trembled, something so rare before his mate.

This was mostly true, for he wouldn't. His mate would not be allowed to take such a journey without constant pestering, worrying, and Vetis struggling to change his mates mind. Perhaps he would play dirty, perhaps.

Hugin’s mental sigh was as soft as his physical ones. He wanted to caution Vetis against such a mindset, not of love but of his determination to always protect Hugin from the world. There would be no controlling Mother Nature in what she decided to do, and accidents would always happen. It felt like Vetis would be priming himself for frequent personal disappointment and anguish.

Wanted to caution him, but didn’t. After all, wouldn’t he himself take on any anguish just to spare his mate? Hadn’t he learned by now that to hurt one was to hurt the other, so this particular declaration wasn’t an introduction of something new but a renewing of something that had always been there?

So Hugin voiced none of those thoughts or concerns, instead deciding to bask in the moment and the comfort he felt in Vetis’ embrace. “Perhaps we should summon the Deity of Love, and see if it’s a new record,” he said in a feeble attempt at a joke, trying to lighten the mood of worry and despair without touching the mood of love.

Vetis's throat let out a low, grumbling laugh, the mood slightly lightened. He was willing to let it. His nose pressed under his mates chin, taking in Hugin's scent and letting out a gentle sight of content. The male sprawled out, though it only served to unwind his paws from his chest and wrap around his mate, pulling him closer.

"I'm not moving." He groaned, as if he was a teenager being woken for school. His deep voice carried throughout the cave. His tail heavily thumped against the ground, suddenly rubbing his cheek against his mates, nipping a ear gently. "What would you do if I carried you on my back everywhere I went, forever?"
PostPosted: Thu Oct 25, 2012 5:00 pm

Hugin laughed at that. “Well I’d probably wither away to nothing without a chance to work my muscles properly, and it’s rather hard to snuggle or do other fun things if I’m always sitting on your back,” he said in a teasing voice, feeling his own heart lighten that his attempt at brightening the mood had worked. He couldn’t do a retaliatory n** of his own given the position he was in, but he did use his shorter and much bushier tail to thump against Vetis’ side.

“Plus you’re too given to fits of laziness,” he said, voice still light and casual. “If anything I think I’d get impatient and crawl off your back, and then start carrying you around.”

Though he didn’t say it, Hugin was also thinking of one particular piece of his mate’s physique that would make carrying Hugin around on his back impractical. Those little bone spikes weren’t enough to cause serious damage, but it would be highly uncomfortable and would cause him to lose more blood than he already was doing; that or his weight would snap the spikes and that was bound to be very painful for Vetis.

Hugin knew Vetis' oddities bothered sometimes though, so he didn't actually say any of this aloud.

The male laughed, again, bumping his mates forehead with his own. His tail flicked, capturing Hugin's tail and holding it, the longer tail at an advantage. The male rolled his eyes, despite his mate being unable to see, though it was simply a playful gesture on his part.

"Laziness? I call it cuddle time." It was only his mate that was able to make Vetis this.... sweet. He was a quiet man, even with his parents, though they got a slightly sarcastic side at times. No, his mate was given the cheesy lines and sweet protection that he was so hell bent on offering. Hugin was his special love, and Vetis was not ashamed to admit it.

"You're lucky I like snuggling, you'd be on my back forever otherwise."
PostPosted: Thu Oct 25, 2012 5:22 pm

Hugin just chuckled quietly. “If I was the type who liked to do nothing but sit around all the time-,” he said, “-you’d probably never have fallen in love with me cause we’d have never met in the first place. I’ve got an overprotective brother and two mothers who would more than be willing to care for me if I’d turned out like that.”

Thinking on it Hugin was sure he hadn’t turned out like that merely because he’d been born blind. Those who had sight and lost it got highly depressed and lethargic in the face of their loss, but he’d never had anything to lose. He could understand the concept though; the thought of losing any of the senses he had now always made him cringe.

At that moment another twinge struck him. Hugin frowned a bit, wondering where that had come from all of a sudden when he’d felt relaxed and, if not in pain, then at least comfortable. Maybe he was just tired…

As if to underlay that thought, Hugin suddenly yawned widely, overcome with exhaustion. “Well you can cuddle all you want,” he said in a sleepy murmur. “I’m going to nap.”

He rolled his eyes, again, simply deciding to nudge his mates cheek. "Never meet? Such a horrible thing to say..." With this, he kissed his mates forehead, nodding at the mention of a nap, deciding he'd stay awake and watch over his mate. He wasn't tired right now. Besides, his mate was adorable, and he was still shaken up over earlier. There was no harm in watching over him.

- Time Skip -

Vetis was padding back towards the cave. Hugin was recovering, thank the gods. He was returning with food and more leaves, having finally worked on the den he had spoken of earlier. It was complete, he simply needed to line it with further leaves before he'd move Hugin in. Speaking of...

"The den is almost done." Vetis quietly murmured as he slipped into the cave to set down berries and a rabbit, quickly nuzzling Hugin before checking over his mates condition.
PostPosted: Thu Oct 25, 2012 5:44 pm

Hugin was sitting upright in the middle of the little nest the pair had made inside the cave, a simple scattering of leaves to keep Hugin off the cold stone floor that leached heat from his body. He was slightly hunched and there was a concerned expression on his face; he’d been so deep in thought he hadn’t even heard Vetis approach, starting at the sound of his voice and quickly trying to mold his expression into a neutral one.

“Ah, that’s good,” he said in a cheery voice that sounded a little flat even to his own ears. He wanted to wince, but managed to keep a straight face. He tried to cover his preoccupation by turning to the food that Vetis had brought. His appetite had vastly increased, much to his surprise, only a day or two after he’d properly woken up.

Perhaps it was just a craving for what his body needed, to heal? There was that cracked rib, and maybe his muscles were a little more beat up than he thought? Or it could be that highly irritating, mild and constant pain that had been bothering him for the last couple days. It wasn’t enough to be more than an irritant, and he had no idea what it could be. All he knew was there was some sort of...expectant feeling around him.

His tone caused Vetis' ear to flick, head jerking to view his mate with narrow eyes. It took all of five seconds for the gears of worry to begin in turning, ears raising as his tail flicked.

"What's wrong?" He questioned, voice firm and low, though not angry. Simply worried, as always. He was glad his mate was eating again, and able to move more, but the flat agreement worried him. Was Hugin simply tired? Did he need another break? Was Vetis pushing him too hard by allowing him to move? Did Hugin need more care? The fretting caused his sparkles to intensify, the one mutation that would cause the male to blush time to time.
