Privately, Cue was pleasantly impressed. This little one had the potential to run with her and the brothers, her speed and strength in the disposal of the creature had proved as much...and perhaps ruthlessness too. When they were of a more proper age, she would have to bring at least this one to the arena for a trial. But she did not join in the chorus of 'good girl!'s and 'well done!'s. Not that she would have under any circumstances, but this particular set also dictated that she would be distracted by the similarly silent mother and the strange, thoughful look upon her face.

Her face gave no indication, but Grey volunteered "Interesting." only when she noticed Cue's curious gaze upon her.

"What is, pray tell?" she said, warily.

"She was the first sac. I wonder if the rest will develop in order." Without looking, she reached a hoof out and made a mysterious mark on a nearby trunk.

Cue made no reply, but unfolded and rose. She could see the sharp gleam in the silvery doe's eye that denoted the start of an involved experiment, and thought, perhaps it was time to leave.

ii. The Killing Moon The second was not in any sort of rush to say or do anything at all. He was always relaxed, especially content with his belly was full, and seemed to have taken to nibbling on Fell’s tail whenever the nanny was close enough. Any dramatic proclamation of his name was going to have to wait. One thing that did get the young male out his seemingly perpetual state of laziness was the shop. He would totter along behind whoever was taking care of the shop front that day, inspecting the customers with big blue eyes while attempting to sneak bites from the all the produce. It was rather slow morning when a customer finally appeared. The blue eyed foal stopped what he was doing (trying to eat a preserved mackerel while nobody was looking) and trotted forward as if to greet them himself.

"You beat me to it my dear," his father cooed as he caught up with The Killing Moon - he was so pleased with his boy having taken a keen interest in the shop (of course, he would love him either way but it was a very delightful advantage), and it made shop-tending that much more of a joy. A nuzzle on his blazing forehead, and the family man straightened up to address their visitor. "Hello sir!" He said most brightly to the buck. "Welcome to Rise & Co's, purveyor of the finest preserved goods. What would you like today?"
The customer looked about him thoughtfully, considering his options, and Rise playfully swatted his son's rump with his tail as they waited.

The Killing Moon looked quite pleased as he stood beside his dad, head held up proudly, watching the customer peruse. “You should try the pickled salamander.” He said after a moment, quite possibly the largest sentence he had uttered since his birth.

Rise's eyes widened at the recommendation, and he pressed close to his child, attempting to convey his love and pride to him - alas, it was deemed (at least by his extended shop family) rather unprofessional to degenerate into a paternal puddle while tending to visitors, so he had to restrain himself and instead added: "the pickled salamander is one of our most notable products, indeed!" Their customer kindly nodded at the duo, rather unaware that Rise's heart was about to burst with joy, and to the colt, queried pleasantly "by the way, you are -?"

Of course he was quite aware of his father’s state of paternal pride, but he barely batted an eyelash. A casual lean against his father was all he gave, his attention fixed firmly upon their customer.
The colt gave a lazy grin, showing a hint of the easy charm that would be his later in life. “The Killing Moon.” He answered smoothly. “At your service.”

Rise was all ready to do the 'oh, he hasn't said his name yet' overinformative spiel, but his son's casual admission of his name - of his name!! - had him rooted to the spot with his mind turned to mush even more than before. The customer smiled benignly. "The Killing Moon, I see." " The Killing Moon," Rise repeated stiffly, resisting the urge to herd the child off for a ferocious fatherly cuddle and a "LOOK EVERYBODY!!!" storewide announcement. " Yes, that's it." Then very quickly, his resolve gave, he hurriedly pleaded Weep to assist this nice buck and bustled The Killing Moon over to Gray, Fell, Fade and everyone else in the shop to repeat this important announcement over and over again for the next few hours. *******

iii. My Very Best Rise-Grey, he'd sometimes innovatively thought of him as - since his own burning hues decorated him in selective shards of his mother's patterns - had indicated just a wee bit of interest in seeing the traps. It was a grudging " maybe I'll go sometime" after watching Fell and himself put together a new trap. He jumped on it immediately. And so, at daybreak now, Rise was pushing at his sleeping colt. " Get up," he said patiently, prodding at him in the annoying way only a parent attempting to wake his child could. " Get up my dear boy. You said you wanted to." He stirred, yawned, and lamented. He shook his head. Rise set his teeth firmly about his neck and pulled him upright. " Don't let me down." It was solemn, almost planitive. The colt gave a helpless groan and they were on their way.

"Do we have to go at this time?!" His son whined, trotting along the well-worn path. "There're still places in the swamp that are dark. We could at least wait until it's light all over. This is stupid."

"Salamander activity has just wound down, so it's a good time to check how the traps are doing," Rise explained, "and isn't the sunrise lovely?"

The boy sulkily said nothing in return, though he did speed up his hoofsteps, perhaps in an attempt to get back to bed as soon as possible. It wasn't long before they'd reached the sprawling area dotted with their traps. Then, he reluctantly admitted, with a hint of awe in his voice: "there's stuff."
