The Anesthesia

F’law had just settled into a chair when the Weyrleader called for attention. Dutifully he paid attention, sensing Zurith sitting close to his leg, but not quite touching. He wondered who and where the temporary gold would come from. Highly unlikely to be from Trine or Melvren. Especially not Melvren. His eyes glanced to the back of Zurith’s blue head at the mention of new bonds. Yes it was. He duly noted the prohibitions. That shouldn’t be too hard. He wasn’t too excited for chores to resume though. F’law doubted anyone was.

He raised a non-alcoholic drink to the toast the weyrleader made. His attention turned back to the other two riders. “W’rick.” He used the other’s new name to get a feel for it. “Ah, never had a reason to go into the smithy. I came from a small gem mining camp.” F’law picked something at random from the plates to sample. It wasn’t too bad.

It seemed the female rider wasn’t taking the restrictions well. Was that… wine? F’law frowned disapprovingly at her, his brows slightly wrinkled. “Didn’t you hear? The Weyrleader just said no wine. Would you put your dragon in danger?” He couldn’t believe she was drink right after being told not to.

Zurith tilted his head, noting the envy in his brother’s voice. We do not. I do not mind if you want to use the spare bunk now and then. Mine will not mind and we are very quiet.

W'rick nodded in respect. "I knew a lot of miners when I lived with my uncle in Benden Hold. My uncle made tools for the miners. They told some great stories." With all the dangers held in those deep shafts, F'law must have grown up quickly. He certainly seemed more mature than some of the other weyrlings. W'rick liked that. He often had trouble fitting in here because of his maturity - not that he cared what they thought.

W'rick reached for his cup but stopped short when F'law spoke up. He looked at P'ne, surprised at her. From the start she seemed a bit odd to him, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing, it just made her hard to figure. He had no idea that she was gay. Even if he knew it wouldn't have bothered him in the slightest. Who was he to talk? He hoped the excitement just made her a bit ditzy. Surely she wouldn't disregard her dragon's safety just like that.

”We may take you up on that,” Pectolath said gratefully. It was nice to know he would have a quiet place to go if he ever needed. ”If you ever need anything you only have to ask. Mine is good hearted and hard working, he will certainly help Your's if you ask.”

P’ne sat down after her bright unwavering moment of courage only to have F’law scrutinize her act of abandon. Oh---

‘Persimine,’ Pyrth rumbled in her head, the tone of the green sounded a bit more lecturing than that of the blue rider. Honestly, she didn’t even give any thought to what she was drinking until it was already well down her gullet. A dark blush quickly spread across the short haired brunette’s pale face. ‘Don’t you dare say you are sorry, it was a mistake just calmly explain yourself.’ Coolly reassured the female dragonet, there was no need for hers to get upset all over again, it wasn’t anything that she needed to fret over and she wanted the girl to know that. Accidents happen. Brushing her fingers through her messy spiked hair P’ne brought her large spring time eyes up and stared firmly towards F’law.

“I would never do anything to jeopardize my Pyrth’s safety. I used to be a vintner, drinking wine is as common to me as a cup of klah in the morning. I simply didn’t realize it until after it was too late,” P’ne made sure to keep her voice level, and mild. The feminine pitch in her voice however made her words sound apologetic. “Don’t be so quick to reprimand me, mistakes happen. We learn from them, without mistakes we don’t grow,” she closed her eyes and then shrugged. A rather impish smile spread across her face. “Besides if we weren’t supposed to drink, the wine wouldn’t have been brought out until after the Weyrleader made his speech. Anyone of us could have already drank before he told us not to. Logically if he didn’t want us to drink at all the wine wouldn’t have been out in the open. I won’t drink a drop again though.”

‘That wasn’t exactly what I meant by explaining yourself Persimine,’ the green gave a snort. ‘What am I going to do with you mine? Brother Zurith, could you possibly inform Yours that Mine means well she just doesn’t know how to express herself properly. It is something that will come with age.

When Suunath came over and greeted them, Stromath paused in his feeding to give a respectful bow to the gold. It is a pleasure to see you, Suunath.

K'en was very much surprised not only that Kindra had come over to speak with him, but that she was also offering him a plate of food. "Ah, thank you," he replied with the slightest flush, accepting the proffered plate. "My name is K'en; well met, Kindra. And yes, Suunath is quite lovely. Congratulations." And this was why it was his brother who chatted up all of the women and not him. Where had his ability to speak suddenly gone?

You have spent too much time being silent, Mine, his dragon said, only half kidding. You need to practice stepping out of your brother's shadow.

... Yes, well, the shadow was comfortable. Less heat there.

... Mine.

It was a joke, Stromath.

You are welcome any time. Zurith gave a soft hum to the other blue. That is kind. I will let Mine know. He likes to do things himself, but I believe he will know when to ask for help. F'lawmine, Pectolath and His will help if you ever ask them. The dark blue turned whirling blue eyes on Pyrth. I will tell him.

It surprised him when W'rick mentioned he knew miners. That for some reason seemed odd to him. "Really? It's nice to know I'm not the only one with a mining background. What did they mine?" F'law hadn't expected to be able to connect with anyone here at the Weyr with what he knew. How often did normal dragonriders go underground? Since he'd never heard of a miner rider.... never. He startled a little bit when Zurith interrupted. A slow smile crossed his lips as he got the message. "Thanks."

He calmly looked back at P'ne. "As drinking wine is common in many holds and weyrs. Why would a vintner make you any different?" F'law gave a slight nod. "Mistakes do happen. Would you rather it be me saying something, or the Weyrleader?" He jerked his head in that direction. F'law absolutely did not want anything to happen to a dragonette after the death of the Yirath.

"Simply because we cannot drink doesn't mean others should have the same restriction. There are non-alcoholic drinks set out. Let me pour you a cup." F'law suited action to words and politely presented the cup to P'ne. He was not trying to alienate the woman, but if she took his words wrong that was her problem.

Gneisth answered cheerily. He hadn't had any idea. It seemed they were getting along well, too, if they'd kept together for this too. If she were to feel shy about approaching the other dragon, Gneisth could certainly introduce them.

"I am indeed! As I suspect you are too," B'nen said with a smile. It wasn't that uncommon to not have met a fellow weyrborn, especially if you weren't fostersibs or didn't run with the same crowd. "We were rather pleased with it ourselves! As for confusing folks, well..." Rather than answer her properly, he simply winked. Just because he was pretty sure Stromath wouldn't let the twins have their fun with it anymore didn't mean B'nen couldn't imply they still would... And he gave Brynja's tale a laugh and an enthusiastic nod. "That sounds about right, straight to the falling for it again! Maybe your experience in witnessing your brother's folly will serve you well though." He nodded again to her question. "They did place us together. I suppose they figure if we can share our mother's womb, we can probably manage to share a weyr with ourselves and our growing dragons."

Gneisth suggested. However, any attempts to move for the meat were thwarted by the Weyrleader's stepping up to make his important announcement.

B'nen listened carefully--oh, there were the golds then. But there would be another transferring in? He wondered if that would still be on the condition of the first gold to Rise became senior--he'd assume that would make for a tempting transfer opportunity. The ground rules came as no surprise--it wasn't like they had changed in Turns and Turns or anything. Sure, going without sex and alcohol until Gneisth was full grown was an inconvenience, but he wasn't going to fuss about it. Some of the others gathered, he glimpsed, took the 'news' slightly differently. Even B'nen had to resist the urge to groan at the idea of lessons starting at dawn. Well, lazing around had been nice...

He turned to Dezima and Brynja, gesturing to their draconic partners. "I know Gneisth would love to pay the tables a visit," B'nen suggested, nodding over to the food. "Would you all like to join us?" As he glanced over, he could see one of the new queenriders seemingly chatting up his brother, and had to fight to hide a smile. Oh, he had to hear this--

W’rick didn’t realize what Pectolath had promised until it was too late. Once the promise was made he could not break it, so he merely smiled and shrugged with the same easy manner as before. He doubted F’law would ask him to do the impossible. Miners tended to have their feet on the ground. “Granite mostly. Nothing exciting I’m afraid. I was studying smithcraft under my uncle before I was searched. That’s why I spent so much time volunteering in the smithy. I wanted to learn how to make flamethrowers.”

As for P’ne, he left her to F’law. If he joined in scolding her she would probably get overly emotional again. He seemed to be handling the situation well enough on his own. When F’law poured her a cup of something different W’rick hoped that would be the end of it. Just to make sure he decided to change the subject. “So you’re a vintner, huh? I don’t know much about that.”

It might be boring but at least it would take her mind off being the victim.

"As it is to see you Stromath, i trust Yours is well?" replied Suunath after a bite of meat, getting comfortable, ensuring Hers waasn't about to run off from socialising with her weyrmates.

Kindra smiled "Good to see you K'en, aaah ... you were one of the brothers that Impressed am i right?" she asked, remembering the two boys that were very alike, impressing the two dragons that appeared to be very close. "Suunath suggested the plate" she admitted, taking a bite out of one of the meatrolls she'd grabbed, at a loss for words as to what to converse about really. She supposed she had better ask about the dragon but at the moment she would wait.

Out of the corner of her eye she spied the thin greenrider seemingly being told off by another rider and she wondered what was going on over there, shrugging she promptly ignored it, the Weyrleader would deal with it if he had to. She didnt have a problem with the restrictions, well ... enjoying a glass of wine was nice but it wasn't a big deal if she had to go without for a while, there was nothing she was going to do to risk Suunath, her beautiful glorious Suunath.

Very well, he replied pleasantly. And Yours? Have you had a pleasant day thus far? He would resume his feeding a bit later. For now he found no harm in more socializing.

"Did she now. Well, thank you as well, Suunath," K'en said with a polite smile to the gold. "That was very thoughtful." Turning back to Kindra, he addressed her former question. "And yes, my twin and I both Impressed at about the same time. If you see what appears to be a copy of me with Brown Gneisth, that'll be him." He glanced about briefly before spotting his brother standing with another pair of riders not too far off. He supposed they might be coming over eventually to feed Theirs as well. Ah, speaking of which... Stromath, you are still hungry, yes?

Less so now. I am enjoying conversation with Suunath.

Let me at least feed you while you talk... Unlike us, you don't need your mouth for that.

Feed yourself for now, Mine. I can take more food from the table when I am ready.

((As P'ne drank alcohol, please take the following action Ane:

- Roll 1d10. If you roll a 1-6, Pyrth gets a 'point' of confusion
- Five posts later roll 1d6. If you roll a 2, a 3, or a 4 she gets another confusion point.
- Five posts after that roll 1d4. If you roll a 3 or a 4 she gets another point of confusion

- This is five and then five more posts in the thread total, not five posts by you.

The three rolls represent alcohol taking full effect.

If Pryth gets all three points of confusion, she goes between. One point and two points will cause her to become deeply distressed, but she will not suicide. Even without any confusion points she will become somewhat distressed and confused.))

While W'lin couldn't see the contents of P'ne's cup he did hear what the other Weyrlings were saying to her.

Wine.

She was drinking wine!

Had he not just told them all about the danger? Was she stupid? It was hardly as though this was the first time the rule had been laid down, along with some other basic essential matters it was covered in candidate lessons. Face going white with fury as he heard her nonchalant dismissal of her 'mistake' the Weyrleader shove his chair back with a screech and strode down the table towards her. "You!" he bellowed, only just resisting the urge to strike her. "How dare you?" Silence spread out from the bronze rider and heads turned towards him like ripples spreading out from a rock dropped into a placid lake. "Have already forgotten my words just now?" he demanded, hands clenched into shaking fists. "Have you forgotten your candidate lessons? You may already have killed your dragon, you stupid girl!" It defied belief. How could anyone be so unthinking, so careless with the life of their dragon? If Kestril were alive.... But she wasn't. There was only him, and may he be drawn between if he allowed this to go unpunished!

"Beginning tomorrow you shall be taking on trip chores until further notice," he hissed, "of course that's assuming your dragon still lives on the morrow! You will remain here for the rest of the feast but you will not be taking part. Sit and look to your dragon girl, keep her focus on you if you want her to live." Jaw clenched, W'lin swept the other weyrlings with eyes that positively blazed with fury. "Let this be a lesson to all of you!" he snarled. "The rules are in place for a reason! They are not to be flouted on a whim, and forgetfulness is not an excuse! These young dragons - Yirath's last brood - entrusted their lives to you, and rely on you completely! You are the future of Pern, and if I see or hear of anyone else endangering their dragons by breaking the fundamental rules I have just laid down, and that were laid down in your candidate lessons believe me you will live to rue the day you were born!"

The Weyrleader turned back to P'ne then, glaring down at her with a mixture of fury and disgust. "Do you have anything to say for yourself, wretch?"

W’rick had begun a more pleasant conversation topic as the other blue rider poured her something else to drink, a voice boomed with the most brutal of white hot rage. P’ne had no idea that the voice, the anger was all directed towards her. It wasn’t until W’lin stormed up to her, his jaw tight and his teeth bared like a fierce beast that she realized he was speaking to her.

‘Mine--- I am scared---’ Pyrth whimpered and pressed her slender frame fully against the brunette. Her mind was completely reeling, she had taken one sip, only one small sip how could that--- how--- it was stupid! That shouldn’t make her precious Pyrth go between! ‘I need you to be strong mine, please be strong’

P’ne bristled, this all was happening too fast, it seemed unreal. Standing up she didn’t even dare look at the Weyrleader she had nothing to say, no excuse. She had endangered Pyrth without even thinking about it, running her hands over the green’s snout she urged her to follow, the damage was already done and if she would between then it would be a private matter. No one else deserved to see what would happen. Following closely besides hers Pyrth kept her head low as she walked, exiting the main area they tucked themselves into a corner of the room far away from the feast, far away from everyone’s judgmental stares.

“You won’t go between,” P’ne demanded, tears flowing down her pale face as she sat down in front of the green. “Just focus on me, look into my eyes. I am so sorry Pyrth. I didn’t think--- yeah I just didn’t think. I was caught up in the moment and just didn’t think. I am so sorry I did this to you.” The girl wrapped her trembling arms around the dragonet’s neck and pressed her face to her chest for just a moment before looking into her swirling hues. “I know you are scared. I’m scared too. I promise, I swear--- I won’t let you go--- I won’t.” The former vintner felt ashamed, terrified, and disgusted with herself. It was so easy to make mistakes and this one would cost a life. “But if you do--- you won’t go alone--- I will go with you.”

F’law had just presented the cup when the Weyrleader’s voice boomed out. It certainly startled him a moment. As the man approached their table, the new rider took a step back. W’lin must have excellent hearing to of heard his soft words to the greenrider from across the cavern and over the general noise. He made a note to watch how loud and what he said in the weyrleader’s presence. His eyes glanced to W’rick to see how the other member of their table was taking it. Zurith gave a soft croon to Pyrth. He silently watched P'ne and Pyrth leave the table.

Mine, let's go over there and you can feed me. The blue nosed towards the tables near the outer edge. At that point his eyes took on a worried glow. You won't drink until you are told to? My sister is worried since Hers drank some.

A'in went to look, but there was no need when the Weyrleader started yelling. He put a hand on Troiseth's shoulder, "No need to worry mine. I might joke around and all, but I listen to my orders." He couldn't believe that someone would do that. As he looked at who it was, he couldn't fault the girl. If her remember correctly she dealt with wines all the time, so it would only be natural. In the excitement it could...No matter, they would be there in case anything happened. Come Mine. Let's go say hello to them.

From the very beginning of the Hatching Feast, Lilah had been focused on, well, the feast. It wasn't just food, it was sharding good food, even better than she'd expected, and that was more than enough to hold her attention. Though she interrupted herself now and then to scratch one of Rhodonth's itches, which only seemed to be multiplying, she chose to keep to herself and eat in peace rather than socialize. The green was a little disappointed, as she wanted very much to mingle with her clutchmates, but clearly Hers was hungry the way she'd been hungry when she hatched, so she would wait until the girl was finished.

...but then the commotion began, and both turned their attention to the fury of the Weyrleader as he unleashed it upon P'ne. Lilah's mouth hung open. Sure, she had some doubt that all the Weyrlings - including Rhodonth and herself - would survive to adulthood, what with eventually learning to fly and flame and go between, but not surviving the Hatching Feast? Never underestimate the stupidity of some people.

As she realized what was happening, Rhodonth's eyes immediately whirled yellow and white, and she dashed from Lilah's side, intent on going to her green sister. Pyrth, Pyrth, I'm here! I love you! Don't go, you just have to-

The striped dragonet was cut off as her rider caught up to her and seized her by the tail before she got very far, at least preventing her from intruding physically. "Stop, Rho," she hissed, crouching to both hug and restrain her. "You can't help them, you have to leave them alone."

But Mine, she has to know!

She knows, okay? You said it. Now drop it. Rhodonth and her fit would only add to potential confusion, and that was the last thing they needed. She could make things worse instead of better, and Lilah most certainly did not want to be responsible for that.

W'rick quickly got out of the way. Pectolath backed up, eyes swirling yellow. He looked to Pyth, sensing her fear and knowing there was nothing he could do. It was all up to P'ne now. He warbled to her and looked to His. ”Mine...”

"It's okay. She won't go between, I don't think..." W'rick looked to F'law but he seemed just as stricken. Neither of them really thought one drink would be enough to endanger Pyth. That didn't make it okay to break the rules, but W'rick never thought they might have to endure another tragedy because of one careless mistake. As P'ne walked away W'rick slowly sat down. Pectolath followed Pyth with his eyes, warbling softly to her until she was out of range.

”That was horrible!” he said, turning to Zurith. ”I wish there was something we could do for Pyth. I know we should not intervene, but it is very hard.”

"There's nothing we could have done. It's P'ne's own fault for not paying attention," W'rick muttered bitterly. He glared at his food, appetite suddenly gone.
