He'd taken his decision, but now he needed to take action. There was one thing that was completely and utterly evident – he would need to learn how to fight.
Even if he didn't want to.
He'd certainly had multiple choices, really – martial arts, kickboxing, self-defence... It seemed like anything that remotely had to do with protecting yourself from the nasty things that wandered the streets had become popular within the last two years, with good reason – the sheer truth of it was simple. Destiny City was not a safe place anymore.
Anyone would have been able to tell you that.
In the end, through, one fact remained – he did not want to harm people. He was slowly, very slowly, coming to terms with the fact that it would happen, that it was probably inevitable. He'd seen it in the surrounding. He'd seen it with Lyra, he'd seen some of it with the negaverse captain he had ended up running away from. They would not listen. If he got some to listen, then it would be nice, and probably very welcome.
But he could not rely on it being the norm.
To stop them from draining civilians, he would have to push them back, stop them – make them flee rather than it being the other way around. He certainly did not want to create lasting damage, and the idea of killing the negaverse agents had simply never entered his mind at all.
He couldn't. He wouldn't.
In the end, it was self-defence he had settled with. All about using someone's own strength against them, all about quickly fending off an attacker without causing too much damage. He wasn't sure how much of it could translate into fighting powered beings that were stronger than your average human, and sometimes armed with something much more terrible than a simple knife.
He'd signed up, got one of the last spots on the class, and spend the entire week preceding the first class fretting – predictably. Would they suspect he was here because he was a page – a knight ? Would they suspect him of being a terrorist ?
Turns out, really, that Daniel had nothing to fear. The glamour that protected every powered being from being linked to their civilian selves was pretty much bulletproof, and once he got to the class itself, he had to admit he didn't look misplaced at all. There were some older people, but an overabundance of young people roughly his age, maybe a little older. Some of his classmates seemed surprised to see the shy, skitting man here of all places, but that was the only thing that stood out. Quickly enough they were back to talking to each other and barely noticing his existence at all.
The first class was interesting, he had to admit – this wasn't about harming or wounding at all, but how to get away from someone as quickly and effortlessly as possible – which was kind of what he'd been doing so far... if one could call what Naica was doing a fighting style. So he listened as much as he could, tried to absorb and understand as much as he could. There would be no practice this time since this was the first time, but...
Well. He was probably going to start putting that knowledge into practice much quicker than the teacher thought.
