 Fireflies
{July 29th, 2011} “Luka, come on, this way. We need to move faster if you want to be able to see what I have planned for us.”
Nodding, the Raevan obediently followed after this guardian. It was nearing dusk, and Luka was blown away by how different the woods near their apartment looked at night. While Elai had taken him down these same paths during the day for the Frei to explore, this was the first time he’d seen these woods under the mantle of the setting twilight. There was a wilderness to the woods, so different from the day.
Shadows were longer, branches were scragglier and the even the pathway seemed more winding and twisting than before.
”What are we looking for?” Luka asked. To be quite honest, this was the first time he had seen Elai this animated. His guardian was easily clearing the path with his long legs as the Frei struggled to float fast enough to keep up. Yet, despite the foreign environment, Luka was also excited. He wanted to know what made Elai so excited.
”How much longer?”
“We’re here.” His guardian answered from ahead, already out of his field of vision.
As Luka floated past the last of the saplings, he found himself in a field or was it a clearing? It was a wide expanse of flat grass, with trees lining the edges. There was nothing special here. He couldn’t understand his guardian’s excitement. ”… I don’t see what’s so spe-” Luka stopped mid sentence as his eyes fell upon the first glowing light moving towards him.
And slowly, one by one, until hundreds, the entire field was lit with tiny bobbing lights. And as the Frei watched the blinking, fluttering lights, he found his own rune blinking lightly.
”HOW?” The Frei exclaimed, turning to his guardian in awe. {Color=chocolate]”What? What is this Elai?”
A smug expression graced Elai’s lips. “Well my little one, I told you it would be worth it. But, we’re in a field of fireflies. I used to come here often as a child, I thought you might like. I’m glad I was right.” Approaching his charge, the older male let some of the bugs land on his hand before holding them out. “They’re a type of bug. They are bioluminescent; it means that they make their own light. Like you,”
”Like me…” Luka repeated softly, putting out his own hands for the bugs to perch on them.
Luka smiled as the fireflies continue to land on his body. He had told Elai about his frustrations of being different from his guardian. But, he certainly had not expected his guardian to remember and take his feelings into consideration like this. To remind him that as different as he was from Elai, there were other things that he was still similar to.
Throwing back his head, the Satyr burst into a fit of laughter. And like bells, it rang clear over field sending the fireflies into a flying mass.
From the edge of the field, Elai watched with a smile as Luka chased after the bugs. Tonight was definitely a major success.

Happy Birthday!
{August 3rd, 2011} “HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUKA!” Elai shouted, laughing as the celebratory popper in his hand shot out a cloud of confetti.
It was hard to believe that already a year had passed since the Raevan had fallen to his care. And while the boy looked the same, Elai knew all too well that Luka had made leaps and bounds in terms of mental and emotional growth. Luka still had that boyish innocence in the way he questioned the natural world, but now he was more skeptical of the scenes and the people around him.
In some ways, that loss of innocence was hard to accept. But wasn’t it the task of every parent to prepare their child for the wilderness of the world around them?
“You are officially a year old now. And, as request, I got your favorite cat shaped honey cupcake from La Bleu Bakery. So, what you need to do is make a wish and then blow out the candle.” Elai said as he pushed the plate with the cupcake topped with a giant “1” candle towards Luka.
”Why? What does wishing and cupcakes have to do each other anyways?” Luka couldn’t help but give Elai an amused look. For all the sternness and general… mildness that his guardian had when it came to emotions, Elai was surprisingly quick to get excited when it had to do anything about Luka’s milestones.
“Well, it’s a tradition I suppose. They say that if you close your eyes and make a wish, then blow out the candle, your wish will come true so long as you don’t tell anyone what you wished for.”
”So there’s no guarantee that it comes true. It’s just one of those things that you humans do. I SUPPOSE I will indulge you this time Elai.” Grinning at his guardian, Luka closed his eyes. He couldn’t help but take a small sense of delight at teasing his guardian from time to time.
Taking a deep breath, the Frei blew at the candle with all his might.
What could he wish for?
What did he want?
I never want these moments to disappear.
Opening his eyes, he peer at Elai. ”Can I eat it now?”
“Haha, yes you may. And, I have one last surprise for you.” Reaching into his pocket, Elai pulled out a yellow envelope and slid it across the table for Luka. “Since it is your birthday, you also get a birthday present.”
Luka’s brow arched with curiosity at the envelope. He was a sucker for gifts and surprises, and this was burning away at him. ”You didn’t have to,” He said politely. His actions betraying his words the Satyr’s hand snapped up at the envelope even before the words finished leaving his mouth.
Tearing open the seal, he took a peep inside.
”ELAI YOU DID NOT!” The youth screeched.
“I may have or I may have not, but you’ll need to take them out the envelope to find out.” Elai could barely finish his sentence, unable to contain his laughter at Luka’s reaction.
Fingers trembling, Luka slowly pulled the paper out the envelope.
It was real. He did. He did do it. Some how, his guardian had managed the impossible.
”HOW? WHEN CAN WE GO? CAN WE GO RIGHT NOW?” Unable to contain his excitement, Luka found himself shouting at his guardian. ”Please, please, please, lets go right now.”
“They are lifetime tickets, Luka. But to answer your question, you can go whenever and we can definitely go today.”
”YES! Let me grab my coat and we can go. I’ve only been once with Oma, but I wanted to go again so bad.” Plucking the candle out of his cupcake, the Frei shoved it into his mouth as he dashed to his room for his coat.
Sitting at the dining room table, Elai smiled.
“Stop run-floating Luka, you’ll choke on your cupcake. The Durem Symphony Orchestra & Opera house is open all day today. We have plenty of time to explore the build. And, I know for sure they have a showing at 4PM so we can stay and listen to that as well if you want.”
”Grab your jacket, Elai! We’re leaving as soon as I come out.” And as if on cue, the youth was standing by Elai. Grabbing his guardian’s sleeve, the Frei began pulling him towards the door. ”Come on, lets go already.”
“Okay, okay. Stop pulling.” Grabbing his jacket, Elai followed after Luka who had already left the apartment.

Lingering Thirst
{November 7th, 2011} Elai is upset.
I broke 11 light bulbs, 2 lamps and a street light this week.
He doesn't understand why I can't control myself.
But, he doesn't realize how hungry I am.
No matter how much I sunbathe, how much I feed on the lights, I still feel a gnawing hunger deep inside my being.
He just doesn't understand...
This feeling has been growing for weeks and I don't know what to do. I keep thinking if I feed myself the feeling will go away like it did in the past... but nothing has changed.
I'm scared.
He won't understand.
What is happening to me?
