Hakim thought over what Aubri said. It seemed strange to send his Dumyr off before he had gotten to know him. Culture, however was important. To allow the Dumyr to intergrate into society it would be essential that they could teach their own culture to those in Barton. Hakim nodded to himself in silent agreement.
It was a great oppertunity, especially if Hakim would be allowed to visit. He could also learn a bit about their culture and see the mysterious city. "I'd like my Dumyr to apply, I think it would be essential for his development."

Trin was torn. She wanted her Dumyr to be able to grow up in its own culture, of course, but she also wanted it to be at home, with her. That, after all, was one of the main reasons she had looked into purchasing one.
Looking around, she saw that no one had yet raised the question she was thinking. Trin raised her hand timidly but spoke confidently, "I really would like my Dumyr to stay home with me, at least for a little while. However, if I change my mind later, would it still be able to go to..." she fiddled with the word for a moment, "Baarikmet?"

Reeshie considered the options. Home was hectic at the moment, so many babes running around, she wasn't sure how well her newest addition would cope with that. She often ended up with quiet, to themselves "children" who often stayed with their respected races to escape the younger ones at home, and she full expected her Dumyr to be similar. She quit stroking the charm and pressed a finger to her lips, closing her eyes.
"I think that would be for the best if mine learned under her own people. My home is not really the place to learn, or concentrate, for that matter. I will often visit, of course," she decided. Like hell she wouldn't visit. None of hers got neglected. She'd made that vow many years ago when she found a fuzzy little kitten in an alley by her basement home. All she wanted was the best for them.

Maggie felt herself blinking repeatedly at Aubri's statement. Offers of apprenticeship in Baarikmet? And from the city leaders themselves?
She found herself thinking of her own inability to get a research grant from anyone. If she refused, the Dumyr she'd adopted would, in a sense, be just like her. Denied the opportunity to learn and possibly use that learnign to make a difference. As she mulled it over from as many different sides as she could see, she gnawed on her lower lip and closed her eyes.
I want her to come home with me, an inner voice whined. But I can't deny her the chance of being accepted. There's still visits and she can come home afterward...
Having reached the only conclusion that seemed right, Maggie opened her eyes and gave Aubri a faint smile.
"I'd like it if she could try. I hate the thought of not being able to see her all the time, but I can't let an opportunity like this be wasted. If they're accepted though, can we at least see them before they leave and say good-bye?"

It seemed like everyone else had a tough time deciding on whether or not to let the Dumyr go. Eveyone, that is, except her. Now she really felt that Aubri made a horrid mistake in choosing her. She would let her Dumyr go no matter what, and that made her feel like she had a heart of ice.
"Of course, if they'll have him. Or her," she added. "There's a lot of corruption among the others in my house, anyway. And by the sounds of it, this sort of opportunity doesn't come along very often."

Aubri nodded.
"In response to your question, Trintika... yes, possibly. But only if one of the council members decides to take on another apprentice, or if the other applicants are found wanting, and the council member takes none in the first place.
"As to the rest of you, I will communicate your wishes with the council members. There is little you can do to assist your Dumyr in this except to wish them the best, I'm afraid.
"I'm sorry to say, Maggie, that seeing them will be impossible. You must understand... the Uluen - kittens - are currently still in Baarikmet. The journey is long and would probably frighten them. As such... I cannot support the idea of bringing them here only to send them right back home."
Dau, meanwhile, had settled down sleepily in Kat's lap. The earlier lapse in affection hadn't bothered him in the slightest, it seemed.

Trintika nodded respectfully, feeling slightly foolish to be the only one to turn down this apprenticeship. She started to reconsider, then stopped-- her first decision had been made for a reason, and she was sticking to it. Her backup plan was lacking, but she was sure she would want to keep her Dumyr at home. Fingering her necklace, she eyed the other new owners. It was reassuring, in an odd way, to know she wouldn't have to compete with such wonderful people.

Hakim thought about Aubri's words. It all seemed to make sense. Educate them before they came to Barton, whilst they were young and able to absorb so much information.
"Two questions Ms Aubri." Hakim said brushing his hair from his eye and leaning forwards. "How long will this training take. Will we miss much of their growth and development. In your opinion, would it be harder to bond with them when and if they come to us after?"
It was slightly worrying that they might not wish to come back at all.

"You would miss all of their growth, I'm afraid - an apprenticeship lasts until a Dumyr reaches their final form, the humanoid one. And unless you visit relatively often, I would hazard a guess that it may be hard to bond. It'd be like having somebody my age move in with you, and expect them to see you as their parent."

Reeshie took in Aubri's last statement with mixed feelings. Her job was difficult to make plans around, but she often had long breaks between assignments. Then it hit her. How would her Dumyr react towards its "siblings" if it didn't get a chance to grow up with them? She bit her lip and considered how she would feel if she was suddenly told she had several older brothers and sisters. Truth be told, they really didn't act much like siblings. More like friends or classmates. She compared the situation to coming to a new school and made up her mind.
"I've thought it trough and stick to my original decision. It might be a difficult adjustment, to come home. But I do believe it is for the best. It is possible to visit them, though, right?" she asked, just to clarify her understanding.

Maggie nodded, murmuring "Oh!" softly.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't realize they weren't here. Stupid of me."
She turned this new information over in her head. You could still visit, her mind whispered. Surely that way a bond could be formed. And think of the things that her Dumyr could learn if accepted as an apprentice.
"I hate the idea of not being able to say hello, much less goodbye," she began in a soft, sad voice. "But I can't stand in the way if my Dumyr wants to try. I'd just have to try to visit as often as I was allowed."

"The council members are, even now, preparing living arrangements, should you choose to visit Baarikmet. Just tell me before you plan to go, so I can send a message ahead.
"Once you have all made your final decisions, I need to ask you to sign some... paperwork." Pursing her lips, Aubri stood. "Excuse me for a moment," she said, then made her way down the hallway. A door opened and closed.
Abolesce eyed the caretakers for a moment before rising. Do excuse me for a little while. Soon, the caretakers were left alone in the living room save for a sleepy, content Daumyin, and the scent of freshly baked brownies.
((Now! Think about choices, discuss, and get to know one another. xd Or whatever. Steal some brownies. xd ))

"It seems like much of this will have to rest on faith." Hakim said trying to break the silence. "Don't you think? This will be my first pet." He confessed sitting back in the comfortable chair once more. "What do the more experienced carers think of this situation?"
He was interested to hear what the others were thinking, as well as hopeful that they might pass on some tips.

Reeshie looked to the young man and smiled slightly. "It does indeed. Raising anything, pet or child, depends on faith. You can often become impatient, frustrated, even terrified at times. You worry what is best for them, if your decisions are the right ones for them. But... When they've grown and you can see how well you've raised them," she paused with a sigh, the sparkle of a content mother in her eyes, "You see that everything turned out alright. No road is perfect, and there's no map to life. All we can do is our best and hope it's the right thing. I put my faith in this educational opputunity."
She reached over and took a brownie from the plate, much more relaxed now that she understood a little bit more about these people and their natures. While taking a bite, Reeshie used her other hand to take a bag of crackers out of a pocket in her soft overcoat. She placed the brownie on her knee for a moment to take a cracker out, break off a piece, and gently place the piece into another pocket. She smiled again and picked the brownie up to take another bite. "I'll have to ask Miss Aubri for the recipe. If you decide to send your Dumyr, try your best to keep in touch. Listen to what it has to say, be it complaints or stories. And praise it. Children like to be praised," she paused again to sigh, this time an exhasperated one, "But don't coddle or spoil. The outcome is not always pleasent, or easily reversed."

"I'll keep all of that in mind, Miss...?" Trintika said, reaching for a brownie. "I feel greedy in a way, keeping my new pet at home. However, I do think it will be the best decision in the long run for the both of us. She -- or he-- will be raised here and learn to adapt to this environment, which will be quite a change from Baarikmet, I think." She smiled, more to herself than anyone in the room. "I'm both anxious and eager to meet him or her. How is everyone feeling?" {XD Therapist Trin.}
