I just realized I update this journal more often than my real journal.

  • Update
    The Forest of Frailty
    Word count: 7132

Yes! I've actually been working on it!

  • Update 10/2/10
    TCK: Take 3

I'm not goint to post word and page count right now because I honestly feel like it takes the freshness out of my work. I don't know why.

Okay, TCK is the novel I've been planning for three years, and I've finally started it! I am beyond thrilled. And even though I'll probably rewrite then entire book several times, it feels so good to finally start!

I actually already rewrote the beginning three times (hence, take 3) and now I love the way it turned out.
This is just too exciting for me.

I've been working, I promise! Although I still don't feel like doing a word count.
I'm going to be gone for three days at Shakespeare Competition. I highly doubt I'll have any time with a computer, let alone one with internet.
    No writing, no gaia.
    (its okay, I'll survive!)

I'm back from Shakespeare. There were fun moments, but the last day was really a fail. Now I'm ornery, and I want to sleep, but I also want to write, and catch up on what I missed here.

Writing myself, actually. I have actually had a bit more energy since I took a break from my original work and went to work on the fanfic. I think I seriously needed that break from them. @_@ I have felt a bit less...I guess stifled is a good word, now that one creative focus has a chance to rest while another one is at work.

Also been there, done that on sleeping myself. >> My sleep schedule has been strange all week between school, meetings, running errands, and writing.

How was the Shakespeare thing? I really am curious about it. Was it a writing thing (assuming)? A sort of tribute?

I take too many breaks from my main work, I think. Its borderline procrastination. But, when you're a hard worker, breaks are necessary and help your work more that deter it.

The Shakespeare Competition is an acting competition in Cedar City, Utah, and schools from all over the west US come to compete (and then there was Wisconsin. I would not make that kind of trip).
There are generally monologues, ensemble scenes, and even interpretive dances, all between 3-10 minutes. Although the script has to be from Shakespeare's plays, lines can be cut, moved around, and even rarely, lines are pulled from a compilation of plays to create an entirely new story. My school has done compilations several times.
    It runs for three days.

As for my 'time' there were some things that definitely made the whole trip worth it. But even though I chatted with my teammates enough, I didn't have a single 'best friend' that I could always hangout with and sit next to during performances. So I got pretty lonely.
And then there was this one girl who I have considered to my friend for a long time, but she ignored me the whole trip and I swear I was getting rejection vibes from her. It was... upsetting.

So, aside from the rant, I was in an ensemble scene from 'The Comedy of Errors' and I was the head maid. Our performance for the judges was the best we'd ever done, but it was still medicore. Oh well, it was fun to be there.
Although writing is really what I'm interested in, I do love performing on stage.

I can see why you'd consider that an unsuccessful trip and be upset about it...

But that's still one of the coolest things I've ever heard about.

That sounds like a lot of fun, actually. Bit of acting, bit of writing, best of both worlds.

Maybe next time will be better for you, though.

I'm definitely glad I didn't miss a chance like that. Especially, Nightmare, because there won't be a next time. Its a school-only event and I'm in my senior year.

I've hit a block in my writing. I am so unsatisfied with my skills! I can't bring my characters across strong enough. I have alot of beginning characters that are only present for a short time, but its important for readers to know them well. The reader needs to have a pretty good idea of the sort of life my MC has lived for 10 years, in one or two chapters. There are alot of important details there, that set up my MC's decisions and actions throughout the rest of the book.

    I'm miserably failing.

There's a creative writing class in my school that I wish I'd known about earlier. And I want to know, specifically, how I can more strongly present my characters in fewer words.

I just finished making character cards. It helped me better define a few characters, but most of them were pretty solid in my mind already.
Really, all I realized was that I need more characters.

Oh, and I hate myself for not being able to draw write now. Where's that art book I bought last month? I need it now.

Ack! I hit another road block.

Part of it was my fault for not establishing a bunch of side characters. There's a family reunion sort of scene, and I did not create the family! *gasp*
So, I had to stop and throw in some characters, which was really fun and I was able to add some more dimension to my story. Yay for characters I totally forgot about.

Secondly, I have no idea how I want my character to get from point A to point B. I'm sick of trains, I don't like ships, and carriages are too small.
15 passenger vans are, sadly, not an option because this is all taking place in the 1700's.
    Uhg.

Now, something really awesome that happened today: An author came to our school for Teen Read Week. I don't actually remember his name, but- he's published! I was excited.
I don't know if I really liked everything he said. He insisted all of us were writers! Even if its only texting! (gag)
But, I got to chat with him a minute after the assembly and that was cool and fun, even if I didn't get any really useful advice.

This Saturday some library, somewhere, has invited a bunch of authors to just come stand around and talk to whoever approaches them. I will be there. Yes!

Uhg, what an awful avatar I'm wandering around with. But I had to do it! I just sold my most valuable items (which is why I'm not wearing them) so I could buy a new set of wonderful and valuable items. I still have to wait a day or two for some prices to deflate.
But- both items sold within 5 minutes of me putting them up for sale- that was a major suprise and I was happy for the rest of the night.

As far as writing goes, I'm going to do a NaNoWriMo sort of thing for December. I already have an idea that I just need to fine-tune. Its been in the back of my mind for almost a year now, so I love to finally pick it up.
I'm thinking it will only be about 50-70k words, and I want to be finished by Christmas. Believe me, I have plenty of time to get it done.

I'm also reading 'The Time Thief' by Linda Buckly-Archer. Its the second in a trilogy. I read it more for the time period than the actually plot line, although I am enjoying more as I get further into the book.
Reading Jane Austen's books has not helped with my research. She's not a very descriptive writer and I honestly find her (gasp) rather boring... Oh well, I'm determined to finish 'Sense and Sensibility' because how can I write a book in the regency era without ever reading Jane Austen? It would be disgraceful, I think.

I could never get very far in a Jane Austen book, so I commend you for actually trying to finish one. I like classic literature, but I dislike Austen.

Also, good luck on your December NaNoWriMo.

    Thank you. biggrin

I also have a friend who, strangely, has never heard of NaNoWriMo, and she wants to do it with me. So, I'm thrilled to have that kind of support.

Austen is... not very descriptive. There's no joy in what her characters are doing- their actions are listed as though they're simple facts, like in a text book.
At least, thats the impression I get, reading this book of hers. After this, I will always stick to the movies.
