I'm better than my band director at all of my instruments. So, my bd can't exactly "expect more" out of me.

Shows what you know. A Band Director can only become a BD if and only if they are well rounded in all instros. That includes strings, percusion, woodwinds, brass, everything. And then there is the other crap they gotta learn like listening to scales, knowing all of them by hearing them, conducting and stuff. Not that easy pal. Just because you're better at your field of play on one thing doesn't mean your better then the BD period. That doesn't mean you shouldn't work at it. Don't waste talent like that.

I wish I was the section leader sososobad. domokun Our section leader is an amazing player, he made all-state last year, as a freshman. I ALMOST made the second round. I was 18th, they took 10. Oh well.

But yeah, as much as I make fun of him in class and help steal his things, I must admit I really really respect his playing and sight reading ability.

Unonamous
I just wanted to know how many people are going to the same thing I'm going through.Everyone complimenting you, always telling you you're the best and your band directors always expecting more out of you. I mean I'm only a freshman I've not had as much musical experience as much as the only trumpets in my section.

Feel honored! You are representing all of the freshman of the world saying, "Yeah, I can totally conquer some seniors with this talent!" Be proud!

The band director is always because I follow the rules, make my band lessons on time (Which I actually have; last semester I couldn't because I had art at that time and was so wrapped up in a project that I forgot, plus it was always on a Monday morning. Now its in the afternoon and I remember) I'm also a really fast learner with songs most of the time and practice parts I don't understand a lot more than other people in my section.

But my school and my section are really small. My section contains two other people, heck, the school I go to is so small, I'll be lucky if my graduation class has thirty people in it)

I am the only french hornpart in the band, so I am, as others have said, best and worst. But I also play the bass... There are two of us. We are evenly matched. He plays upright, so he somtimes (most time) is flat or sharp, but i am never, unless is start playing in the wrong position... sweatdrop But anyway, i don't know which of us is better.

I'm one of the most improved. I started like in the 8th grade about 2-3 years after everybody else. But I'm working on being one of the best. So far it's working perfectly.

I'm first chair, but my advice to you is don't get a big head about it. Seriously; there's always someone better than you. If you're a Freshman, there's still a lot to learn and even if people "praise" you and whatnot, you seriously have to learn to block it out or else your attitude will start to reek. I've seen it happen... My theory is this; no one ever got anywhere thinking they were the best. There's always room for improvement, even if you are first chair and whatnot...

I'm not one of those Nazi musicians that practice 346987 hours a week, so I'm not saying waste your time with stuff like that if you're not into it.. I'm just saying that humility is a great quality to have wink

Cockiness is the biggest turn-off when I meet people. xp

I'm first chair trombone (However the other two trombones are leaving me, so I may be the only one next year...)

I'm third chair flute in concert band (lowest level band in my highschool. A.K.A "Frosh Band". It's the band all the freshman are automatically put into when they first go to highschool. And yes, I am a freshman)

But the first chair and second chair flute players just finger along because they don't really play all that well.(Our piccolo player who is last chair can't even read music gonk ) I got 3rd chair because I auditioned on my broken flute scream and I couldn't play any note from middle C to Tuning Bb. That made me pretty upset when I found out I was going to be third chair for the rest of the year.

Then my band director last week asked me if I wanted to go to Wind Ensemble (This is the highest level band, and not even a lot of seniors get to be in this band.) But he wanted me to play mallets. gonk I mean yeah, I was in Winter Percussion, but I have only been playing for a few months. It was a real big honor to be even asked though. He mentioned moving me up on Thursday last week, and hasn't said anything since, so I don't even know if he really meant it. gonk
