WICKED - The True story of the Witches of Oz
**Contains Spoilers for the Musical Wicked; Read at own risk**
We all know the story of the Wizard of Oz and Dorothy Gale and all that, right? What if we weren't getting the whole truth? What if who we thought was good was bad and who we thought was evil was good?
"Whatever way our stories end, I know you have rewritten mine, by being my friend." --Elphaba AKA The Wicked Witch of the West to Glinda The Good Witch of the North
This is the premise of the musical Wicked, based on the novel by Gregory Maguire. The musical begins with the death of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and the celebration throughout Oz ("No One Mourns the Wicked") The party-goers are soon joined by Glinda the Good who tells them the story of Elphaba's strange origins.
"Is someone born Wicked, or is Wickedness thrust upon them?" Glinda asks. She then tells the Ozians about Elphie's parents, her adulteress mother and her hateful father. "So you see, it couldn't have been easy . . ." Glinda concludes.
Then one of the Ozians asked Glinda a very difficult question, "Is it true you were her friend?" Primarily taken aback, Glinda fumbles her way into the story of how she and Elphaba met. At a school called Shiz. ("Dear Old Shiz) Now the musical is in the past, and we see Elphie and Glinda as students, thrust into sharing a room together. And hating it.
Meanwhile, Elphie was chosen by Madame Morrible to be her special Magic student. Glinda, who really, really wanted that magic wand, immediately hates the odd green girl even more. Morrible thinks Elphie has great potential and will immediately write to the Wizard to tell him of her great skills.
But there are problems with Oz, as Dr. Dillamond, a talking Goat, tells Elphie. The Animals are slowly losing their abilities to speak, and people are beginning to hate the Animals.
Back with the school drama, a new guy comes along and Glinda immediately sinks her claws into him. Fiyero is everything a girl could want: charming, cute, and brainless. One night at the Ozdust Ballroom changes the students' lives forever, as Glinda sets Elphie's sister Nessa up with a nice munchkin boy named Boq and then offers Elphie a "smart" pointed hat. Both of these are taken as acts of serious kindness towards Elphie and her family, so she does something nice in return and asks Morrible to include Glinda in their Magic lessons. After this, Glinda and Elphie are best friends.
One day Elphie is finally asked to go to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard. Seeing Fiyero and Glinda fight at the train station, Elphie asks Glinda to come with her. When they meet the Wizard, he manipulates Elphie into giving a family of monkeys wings to make them his secret police to control all the Animals. After this, Elphie vows to expose the Wizard for what he really is and flees, taking Glinda with her.
For a moment they pause in a storeroom, hiding from the guards. After a fight, they go their separate ways, saying, however, "I hope you're happy, now that you're choosing this. I really hope you get it, and you don't live to regret it."
After this, Elphie is chased off by guards and a smear campaign against her begins.
The Second half begins with Glinda in her new position as Glinda the Good, and her engagement announcement to Fiyero, who is very surprised to hear he is marrying Glinda . . . Fiyero meanwhile as been leading the search for Elphie. If anyone can find her, it's him.
Meanwhile Elphie goes to visit her sister Nessa and finds her sister much changed and bitter. The reunion ends with Boq being turned to tin and blaming Elphie for taking out his heart, which is actually Nessa's fault.
Elphie goes to free the flying monkeys from the Wizard. As she is about to be caught, Fiyero and then Glinda come along. The guards back off, Fiyero looks from Glinda to Elphie and says to Glinda, "I'm going with her." And he and Elphie escape into a dark forest while Glinda gets all heartbroken and angsty.
Glinda, in retaliation, tells Morrible that the quickest way to hurt Elphie is through her sister, Nessa. So Morrible kills Nessa. Which was not Glinda's intent. When Elphie comes to Nessa's destroyed house, Glinda is waiting there. They have an argument and Elphie is almost captured. In comes Fiyero to the rescue, who takes Glinda hostage to make the guards free Elphie. As the guards take Fiyero away, Glinda tells the guards, "No, he wasn't going to hurt me. He just . . . really loves her."
Next scene Elphie tries to cast a spell to save Fiyero's life. She goes a little crazy and tells herself, "I'm Wicked through and through." After this she kidnaps the girl Dorothy (because who steals a dead woman's shoes, honestly? Where was she raised, a barn?) Glinda comes to her castle (Actually Fiyero's castle) and tries to convince Elphie to release Dorothy. Elphie agrees. The two friends make up and say their goodbyes. The witch hunters have arrived. Elphie tells Glinda not to try to clear her name, pulls a screen to hide Glinda and lets Dorothy pour a bucket of water over her.
The musical comes full circle. Glinda takes control of Oz, imprisoning Morrible, and banishing the Wizard.
Fiyero, turned into a scarecrow comes back to the castle and calls for Elphie, who pops out of a secret trap door. They run off together in secret. Elphie's one wish in all of it is that she could have told Glinda that they were alive, safe, and happy.
The End of the Musical.

Out of Oz
As they were leaving Oz, Elphie and Fiyero found themselves in a magical land. They were transformed into ponies and separated. Now they are searching for each other and anyone else who has heard of Oz. As Elphie says, if Fiyero is alive, he will find her. He's good at that.
