Firemoon had also noticed that Lunarflare went to go talk with some of the other wolves. Like Peppermint she wasn't too happy that he seemed to have no interest in the race. If he really didn't want to be part of it, he could have easily let Eustace's no be for both of them. That is a dangerous thing to say, she replied. Yet, that might be a fun thing to see. With that said, Firemoon had to push herself harder so she can kept up with her opponent. Yet, she still wasn't quite giving it her all, at least not yet. Jumping over last obstacle, Firemoon thrusted off the ground, before running her fastest to get to the finish line first. She didn't pay much attention to Peppermint, only that she was behind her. At long last her black paws raced past the finish line. Panting, she slowed down and turned to see where Peppermint was.
Keahi smiled as she watch the race end. She was proud that Firemoon won, though it did help that Firemoon was bigger the Peppermint. Turning to head to the Captain's office, Keahi decided she would congratulate her bonded later. She just wondered if winning with will give Firemoon a big head, since she did beat a former Beta.

Peppermint actually snorted as she ran. It may be something that could put me in danger but I won’t take back those words. He may be Alpha, but he could have at least learned from his mother about actually seeing through. Thus another reason why I like Twilight better. Pushing herself over the last obstacle, the small wolf felt her paws fly over the ground after Firemoon. Despite being as fast as she was, there wasn’t enough distance to the finish line to pass by her opponent. She had caught up relatively quickly even though there had been at least a meter distance between her and the flame and darkness licked wolf. The older wolf finally decided to give it her all, but even so, Pepper kept up nicely. Her muzzle crossed over the line as Firemoon’s front paws left the line. However, when the female wolf slowed and turned around, the white and red wolf was still sliding on the snow. No! Don’t turn around! she warned. Too late, as the older wolf turned, Peppermint used a move she never had much use for. She sprung herself into the air, landing on her front paws while pivoting around so she was looking at her opponent while skidding backwards, slowing herself down. Luckily, she stopped short of a tree.
Dylan found himself hurrying over to his bonded. You okay? he asked, the worry evident in his voice. The she-wolf looked up at him and nodded her head with a smile. Thank goodness, the Private sighed. He slung his arms around her neck before letting go so his wolf could go over to Firemoon. Sure, he had been caught off guard by what happened in the end, but he had pretty much had it set in his mind that she would lose. They both knew she didn’t have the height that Firemoon luckily did but still, she had held her place despite the huge disadvantage. After all, she hadn’t been one of the fastest wolves in White Shadow for nothing. Being able to surpass an Alpha in speed was a surprising feat in itself. But of course, it only held for when there were no obstacles. When there were, she could just barely keep up, but none the less, still do so. However, at the moment, she didn't even look all that tired. Scratch that, she wasn't even panting. Sure her breathing had become slightly irregular from having her heart rate pushed higher, but she could probably keep running for another two or three minutes before her breathing got heavier. Not till she started panting, just got heavier. Damn obstacles, Dylan thought.
The cherry snow cone wolf nuzzled her bonded gently before turning to Firemoon. Good race, Firemoon, Peppermint indirectly congratulated the other female. She wasn’t one to hold grudges on things like this. Weather Firemoon decided to get a big head over this race or not was her decision. That’s all there was to it. “You should probably go and wait for Keahi. She just started heading over to the Captain’s office. You’ll probably be able to catch her before she goes in if you want to,” Dylan said. Pepper hadn’t been planning on hearing him say anything, but she was perfectly fine with it.

Looking at Clyde again, though his face was turned away, she noticed that he looked a bit flushed. He was also saying things like he was fine and he was even stuttering. Would an infection have been able to give him a fever and these kind of symptoms so quickly? She wanted to feel his forehead, but it looked like he had other ideas. Either that or he was losing his balance. When Clyde started moving, Eustace's first instinct was to hold him more tightly so that he wouldn't fall. Seemed like he was just trying to walk again, though, so her grip loosened again almost immediately. If he was going to start walking, then he should have warned her first. Doing something like that could have dragged them both to the ground. She wanted to reprimand him, but she didn't. He could be really sick and it seemed like he was delirious. Even if she did, it wouldn't make any difference. That, and she didn't think she could say anything at this time without losing whatever air of authority she might have had before. Having felt like she was just hugging him very tightly didn't do much for her nerves.
Eustace walked with him in the direction of the infirmary, now sure that even if there were no doctors present, that she had to leave. Before cleaning his wounds, the shirt would likely have to be removed and that was something she simply couldn't handle. After all, it wasn't every day that she saw shirtless men. Although it really wasn't considered nudity for a man not to be wearing a shirt, wolfriders did tend to keep most of their skin hidden. In the farms, it wasn't that uncommon to see a man walking around without his shirt on, but for whatever reason, the significance of that naked skin had changed quite a bit from when she was a child. That could be chalked up to the fact that people in the forts (and in the Academy), regardless of rank, spent most of their time wearing very modest uniforms. Eustace would just have to send someone to the Hall to get a doctor while on her way back to her office. She had instructed Keahi to meet her there. Hopefully, by the time she got back, she could listen calmly to whatever excuse the woman came up with.
He is lucky to have someone like you around just the same, LunarFlare said to GoldDust before turning his head just in time to catch the end of the race. He had to admit, the result was surprising and even disappointing. He would have thought that a Beta who had been working under his parents would win. From what he remembered of his mother, she'd had high standards. It didn't seem likely that Peppermint would have measured up. She could blame it on circumstances, but any wolf that managed to get to the rank of a Beta should be able to beat a Gamma in any given situation. He looked intently at both wolves. Or perhaps it was simply that Firemoon was an exceptional Gamma. For the smaller of the two wolves, Peppermint did manage to give an impressive finish. Maybe she wasn't a total loss. If you'll excuse me... He nodded to both GoldDust and Willowpelt before trotting off toward Peppermind and Firemoon again.
Congratulations, Firemoon. Well done, he said, acknowledging Peppermint with a short glance in her direction. The second race will be held tomorrow. I would hate this first race to impair the chances of someone already at such a disadvantage. It was common knowledge that he was the largest wolf in the fort, hence he was the Alpha, but that might have sounded a bit cocky to someone who really wanted to read into it. He left it at that, turning back around to continue his conversation with GoldDust and Willowpelt, though the other male hadn't contributed much to the conversation aside from a hearty chuckle. With that business settled, LunarFlare sat in the same place to continue their rather dull conversation.

An amused flick of the tail as well as a quick bowing if the head to try and reign in said amusement is Dust's main reaction to that statement. They are all very lucky to have each of us in these forts. I can't really see them surviving on their own nearly as well without a wolf to guide them. Absently she follows his gaze towards the end of the race, though the outcome is of no interest to her either way. A quick nod is given to the Alpha again as he walks off to the pair of females. Well, that was interesting I suppose. Conversation wise, not really. The race, maybe. Possibly, but not really either.

As LunarFlare sat next to GoldDust and Willowpelt again, he replied to GoldDust's last statement. I find it doubtful they would survive, even without the centipedes returning every spring. They are a helpless lot, aren't they? No matter. The fact was that they did have the wolves to lead them in the right direction and protect them from a foe that kept getting more powerful. After the smaller, venomous centipedes arrived, there was devastation. What would happen with the species' next mutation? LunarFlare shook his head, effectively shaking away the thought. That wouldn't happen for a while, he told himself, if it happened at all. In all honestly, he couldn't figure out anything more to contribute to the conversation.

Effectively, Gold Dust snickers in response to that. Helpless as a newborn litter of cubs, they are. Though there is some manner of protection when they have those guns in hand. But the things can never be trusted. Not that she personally cared for them, anyway. A curious tilt of the head is sent LunarFlare's way when the Alpha shakes his head, but she doesn't question it. Speaking of the lot though, how is your rider coming into her rank? I haven't been watching them about as much as I could. Human affairs weren't half as interesting as the wolf interactions in the fort.

Firemoon had already started turning, when Peppermint called out to her. She soon saw Peppermint still racing toward her. The only reaction she was able to do was duck her head, as the red striped wolf jumped over her. Her teal eyes blinked, impressed with the jump. She will have to ask Peppermint to teach her that nice little move. She watch for a moment as her rider rushed to see if Peppermint was alright. Before she was able to do anything else, Lunarflare came back over. Her ears and head went down in respect. Thank you, Lunarflare, she replied. She was glad that he was planing to have their race to tomorrow. They will both be able to race at full strength. He was gone as quickly as he came. It made it seemed like Golddust and Willowpelt was more interesting.
Giving a quick huff, she turned her attention back to Peppermint. It was a very good race, Peppermint, she said. Though, that was a very nice jump you did. Are you willing to teach me that? Her ears twitched toward Dylan at what he said, before looking at Keahi, who was much her way to the Captain's office. Keahi was going have to deal with it on her own, since she did it to herself. Firemoon will just go see her afterwards.
As Keahi walked, she had a lot of time to think. Did she really have an excuse to the Captain? Not really, but she didn’t really want to give one either. She did what she did, and will accept any punishment she gets without complain. Since she also doubted Eustace would care what kind of excuse she give her anyways. Rubbing the back of her head, Keahi let out a long sigh. Not only did she have to worry about the Captain, she also had to worry about Firemoon. She was sure that her wolf will also yell at her when her meeting with the Captain was done. When she finally reach the Captain’s office, and just stood and waited.

LunarFlare could have smiled at the change in subject. Now this was something interesting to talk about, though exactly how far from small talk it was, he couldn't be sure about. After all, GoldDust could just be asking out of courtesy. He wouldn't have brought it up on his own, but when someone expressed interest, Lunar didn't see any reason not to tell. If anything, it would shed some light on today's outburst. If pulling a gun on someone doodling under a tree is indicative of anything, then not well, he answered, laughing humorlessly. Without a Lieutenant or any Sergeants, the workload is... undesirable. And she worries herself over insubordinate privates, though whether this is due to paranoia or any actual insubordination is difficult to say. Lunar didn't want to refer to the wolf ranks simply because it would bring up the subject of mating and those conversations were always awkward. It was indeed his fault that there was no Lieutenant. There was no submissive Alpha. Perhaps this topic wasn't as desirable a subject change as he thought. Lunar sincerely hoped she wouldn't bring that up. He would immediately reply with a stern "That's none of your concern", but just the same, he did not want to go there. Period.

Dust flicks an ear absently. So that's what the Private was doing? I wasn't paying him much mind. But then that wasn't a surprise was it. The Private was male after all, and Ali's.. opinions did trickle down somewhat. Instead of breaching the topic of a Lieutenant though, she heads for the other direction. Are there none proving themselves capable yet of taking on the Sergeant position and Beta ranks in the pack to help with it? Of course, I don't quite blame the delay. It hasn't been that long since we lost our former Alphas and Betas to the plague. They were strong leaders, but they left much to be done. Perhaps your rider could use a vacation, or a visit to your mother's fort to see if they might have some ideas for the stress? Crossing her forepaws, she settles down a bit more comfortably. Just standing there was getting a bit dull and this could be a long chat.

LunarFlare nodded. Eustace would likely not have noticed him either had he not been using her as a subject. He was quite happy that GoldDust didn't pry into the subject of a Lieutenant. He thought a bit about Betas before replying, There have been several wolves that have shown leadership skills, but their riders are another story. If Eustace's suspicions about insubordination are well founded, then promotions are unlikely. Lunar supposed that he could always just pick wolves that he felt suited for the job and forget about the riders. If the wolves could earn Lunar's trust, then they wouldn't let their riders do something stupid like attempt mutiny. They will likely meet at the upcoming ball. The subject will undoubtedly come up. LunarFlare stretched his back and legs, but didn't lie down. Sitting was comfortable enough.

Oh, he was drawing her? That was interesting. Dust nods lightly, scanning over the fort just a moment. Would anyone really risk their hides for such an act? Spring isn't as far away as they would like to think and disrupting the ranks is such a foolish thing to do when we don't even have the numbers we had just two years ago. Though she decides to let such a dark thought drop. It was a depressing subject, and one that could nearly raise her hackles to think of the fort's pack falling apart after the years she'd spent in it.
At the mere thought of the upcoming ball, again she snickers. Oh dear, I'd forgotten about that ball. Ali is certainly not looking forward to it himself.

LunarFlare nodded. You would think that they would respect rank, especially now, but humans can't be trusted with things like sensibility or intelligence. He chuckled, meaning to lighten the mood after GoldDust's dark comment. In all honesty, I do think that their "insubordination" is limited to petty squabbles like today's misunderstanding. I doubt that there is any danger of mutiny. I respect their intelligence enough to give them the benefit of the doubt, he told GoldDust, reassuring her. Somehow, he felt that she might need it, though she showed no outward appearance of needing to be reassured. Perhaps LunarFlare had been just unsettled enough by her comment that he felt the need to cheer GoldDust (and himself in the process) up.
LunarFlare smiled wolfishly. I daresay Eustace is feeling a similar dread for it, but as the Captain is obligated to attend.

Peppermint had finished assuring her rider that she was okay, shooing him off as she believed he needed to mingle with other humans instead of stick to her. Turning her head, the stripped wolf flicked her ear politely. Yes, it certainly was a good race. I congratulate you on winning. The female wolf was in no way a sore loser, but she was pretty annoyed with herself. My skill must have slipped away from me while I was busy getting my sorry excuse of a rider to start training again. But you of course are a great opponent, Pepper told the older female. As for the move, I am indeed will to teach it to you. And I'm sorry in advance if I can be a little confusing. But as for now, I hope it's okay with you, but I'm going to follow my rider and make sure he isn't doing anything stupid. With a small dip of her head, the candy cane wolf was trotting off after her human.
So ways ahead of the wolf, Dylan let his feet fall down lightly on the ground. Pepper had wanted him to go socialize, but he still wasn't as comfortable as he once was. The only ones who he could still talk to completely normal and comfortable was his former mentor Derek, his former uncle and his aunt, but one was in White Shadow, the fort he left behind, and the other two, well who knew where they were. All he knew was that them being near each other was not a smart thing let let happen.
The male sighed as he continued to trek around, hoping for someone or something to help relieve him of his boredom as he waited for his partner to stop taking her dear sweet time on walking to him.

Aerospark stretched out his legs and yawned. It was a little late in the day to finally be waking up. Must have something to do with getting old, Aero remarked to Jack while stepping out of the den. Jack was there waiting for him.
Jack snorted. I ain't getting old. My sleeping hours are just off. They go to sleep promptly at a certain time and how long they sleep is completely and totally random. It could last anywhere from a couple of hours to up to twelve.
Aerospark laughed openly at this. Want to prove it? Aerospark walked cautiously around Jack, being eyed suspiciously by his bonded. Then, at the opportune moment, Aerospark jumped up and rested his front paws on Jack's shoulders.
"Agh!" The wolf quickly slipped down from the rider's shoulders, resting there only a few seconds. "Geez, Aero! What you trying to do, kill me?" Jack rubbed one side of his shoulders with the opposite hand.
Aero smirked and laid down, crossing one forepaw over the other. Case in point, he laughed, flicking his tail from one side to the other. There's no denying it. You're old.
Jack growled, "You think I'm old just 'cause I can't carry your fat behind?" He gave Aerospark a playful shove. He had given up on the telepathic communication. It was rather difficult to yell or argue telepathically.
Aerospark shook his head. Oh, I wouldn't make you do that. Carrying my "behind" would kill you. Aero laughed. Anyway, why don't we get to the training field so you can yell like an idiot for the youngins to get off of your lawn.
Jack rolled his eyes and shook his head. You really think I'd mistake the training field for my lawn? he asked, walking in the direction of the training field.
Aero smiled. Smart and old don't often coincide. Aerospark followed Jack to the training field and their playful banter continued until they saw the familiar sight of Dylan and his wolf Peppermint. How long had it been since the last time Jack had spoken to Dylan? The two got along well enough, it seemed, though Jack's fights with Dylan's aunt had put a little bit of a strain on their relationship sometimes. As if to give Jack some incentive to talk to his former nephew, Aerospark approached Peppermint. Hey, Peppers. And how are you doing on this wonderful day? he asked, walking alongside her toward her bonded.
Jack shook his head at Aero, silently pleading with him not to start what promised to be a really awkward situation. He looked around, noticing Dylan up ahead and gauged his time to find an escape route. Aero looked back at him and stuck his tongue out. If you don't go over there and talk to him, I'll sit on you. "Why you!" Jack stood there, sulking for a moment. "Ah, hell..." He walked, half-jogged, up to Dylan so that he could appease the little (or rather, enormous) miscreant that was his bonded. He cleared his throat. "So... How're you doing, Dylan?

Pepper's tail swinged happily as she padded behind her rider. That was, until a gray male wolf padded up to her. Her eyes started to sparkle in delight at the other and she gave a, single, joyful bounce. Aerospark! It had been a while since the two of them talked, much less their bondeds despite the fact that the two humans had once been related, by law that is. However, she wouldn't deny that they talked more than the other two.
Giving what could be considered a wolf's laugh, Peppermint shook her head at Jack before turning her attention to the other wolf next to her. I'm doing well, just had a race with Firemoon, and I'm wondering if our Alpha hates me or something, she mused. And how about you, Aero? the female chatted, keeping an eye on the other two.
Dylan blinked his eyes rapidly, before looking at the owner of the voice. Relaxing, he allowed an eyebrow to raise as he looked at the man. "Well, look who's here. Dear ol' Uncle Jack," he joked playfully so as to avoid any awkward tension. Besides, his aunt was around to spark a spat between the two making it easier for him to speak with the man. "I'm doing okay. And what about you?"
Not as easy as it was to talk with his aunt (who he feared greatly when it came to her combs when she would attack his hair) but definitely easier then many at the fort.
