"I thought about it. We get plenty o' horses tha' aren't really show horses, but they're still good fae ridin'. Do you want one?" Rory asked.
Jeremy just rolled his eyes. "How long are you going to stay with them, Lee? We really do miss you at school. I miss you."

Barely laughing with disbelief, Lee's eyes went wide, an excited smile clear on her face. "Y-yes, of course!" She'd have her own pony! Even Mr. Katan was smiling, happy to see his daughter being spoiled again. Turning to Jeremy, Lee answered him honestly. "I dun plan on coming back." Starting to speak, Lee stopped herself, trying to think of a way to say what she wanted to say without hurting the boys feelings. "Jeremy, did we ever actually... talk before today?" How could he miss someone he never knew? Or at least, she didn't remember knowing him too well.

"We sat at the same lunch table almost everyday. I used to sit behind you in Mrs. Foster's class," Jeremy said, not giving up hope on winning her over from the pikey.
Rory smiled a bit at Lee's acceptance of the horse. "You'll hae t' take care o' it, you know. I'll show you how, of course."

"Ohhh, wait, you were Akira's boyfriend, weren't you?" So that was how she knew him. Yeah, in that case, she spoke to him before, but not about anything meaningful. She wondered for a moment why he bothered to care about what had happened to her, or even why he bothered showing up here. Turning back to Rory, she smiled and nodded. "I can do it right after work, right? I'll take care of it." She figured it would be easier to take on another responsibility if she set a specific time to do it. It would be difficult to forget if it became a habit, or so she figured.
The bowls of salad were taken away, whether or not they were emptied yet, and replaced with plates of seared scallops, the main course.

"I think after work would be a good time, yeah. I'd still be at th' stables a bit," Rory said, nodding. He looked at Jeremy. "Why are you here?"
The other boy looked a bit surprised to be addressed so frankly. "I'm a friend of Lee's. I was concerned about her."
"Pull th' other one," Rory said, giving the boy an incredulous look.
"I'm sorry?" Jeremy blinked in confusion.
"Why are you really here?" Rory clarified.
Jeremy looked at Mrs. Katan a moment. "I was invited."

Lee blinked, opening her mouth but deciding not to say anything. She understood now. Looking to Rory with a cocked eyebrow, she smiled uncomfortably before deciding to eat instead of say anything.
Clearing her throat, Mrs. Katan was in no mood to be coming up with lies at this point -- the alcohol didn't help, either. "Let's be honest. Jeremy would make a much better match for Lee. He's well educated, has a good family name, and is much more polite." She shrugged, as if her words were a fact.

Jeremy just gave Rory a smug smile.
"Oi, I'm rather well educated. Donnae let th' accent fool you, ma'am. I'm plenty polite, too, when me character isn't bein' challenged or I'm bein' treated like shite. As fae me family name, it's good enough."

"Good enough? And what about Lee's future? Will that just be good enough? I'm not settling for that. I'm sorry if I want my daughter to be as happy and well taken care of as possible."
Lee sulked in her seat, not looking up from her plate as the two bantered back and forth. Was this what the holidays would be like? When the grandchildren came over to visit? Every time these two came together, would an argument start? Looking over to her father, she got the idea he was thinking the same thing.

Rory frowned. "If Lee didnae think it wis good enough, that I wis good enough, she wouldnae be wi' me, ma'am." He said nothing more, deciding to eat the scallops before the servants took the food away. At the first bite he looked at Lee. "What did you say these were again?"

Lee's mother just scoffed a bit, giving Jeremy a reassuring grin and nod.
"Seared scallops. It's seafood... why, do you not like it?" She looked at him worriedly, though she wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have a taste for them.

Smiling, she was glad to hear he'd be eating them, not wanting the boy to be starving later on. "Uhh... I'll ask for it later for you, if ya want..." She didn't have the heart to tell him her mother didn't cook, simply because she was afraid of embarrassing him.

"Alreet," Rory said, finishing off the scallops and vegetables they'd been served with. He was wondering where he was going to find seafood and figured a trip to the better outsider markets would probably be the best place to look.

Trying to get a word in now that things had died down, Mr. Katan stuck to what he knew best; work. "So, Jeremy, do you have a job of some kind? Maybe help your father out at work?" While it was true that there was no need for this boy to work, he thought he might ask. Seemed like a safe enough topic.
The plates were picked up by the servants, and in their places were set smaller plates with slices of chocolate cheesecake. Lee couldn't have been happier, wolfing down her slice as soon as it was in front of her. As she was busy stuffing her face, she noticed that Rory had done a fine job of using the proper utensils, and smiled to herself between bites.

"I don't work, no, sir. Father says my studies are more important right now," Jeremy answered.
Rory took a few bites of the cheesecake, then slid it over to Lee, knowing she'd probably want it more than he did.
