My box turned into a snail? Which ... I assume is a petpet. But ... I don't have a Beta, so I'm a liiiittle confused.

Yes, snails are one of the types of petpet/beta pets. It's ok to have one even though you don't have a Beta to equip it to. Just save the snail (because staff clean their photobucket accounts of extra beta stuff) and once you get a Beta ask one of the staff (Gnatty, Psyren, or Aryn) to add it to your tag. Does that answer your question?
