Physically, no.
But, based on what I've read about him in the manga (only up to Vol. 11-ish), he's pretty weak emotionally. Sure he's all tough, because he never had love, but all bet that if someone were to walk up to him and tell him that they love him, he wouldn't be so strong in that situation.

In my opinion, Gaara's pretty strong. And that's just because of his sand. But in taijutsu, I am not seeing much...I mean, I don't see much of anything really. All he uses is his sand...No weapons (in what I've seen, mind you), no physical combat...No. He's physically weak without the sand.
But of course, he still kicks a**.
Emotionally and mentally weak? Emotionally, yes. Mentally...Well, hey, he's not stupid. He's weak emotionally because, well, if Naruto hadn't shown him the meaning of friendship (or something like that), e would still be MUSTKILLMUSTKILLMUSTKILL Gaara, yes?

Gaara is certianly not week AT ALL. The only ones who are weak are all those who have faced him in a battle (minus Lee and Naruto). He doesn't have any taijutsu training like so cuz all he uses is sand. Still, he's very good controliing the sand and killing everyone.
I do have to say that his emotionally weak. He doesn't really have a stable mind cuz he thinks everyone is after to kill him, or they run from him because they are scared and such.

I don't think that whether he's weak without his sand would be relevant in most combat situations, since it's almost impossible to seperate him from his sand, I imagine.

Gaara cant do any kind of Ninjutsu or anything like that, he is literally weak. As far as ninja's go, he has no talent because he never actually had to learn. The Shukaku was his only type of offensive stuff at all. TT__TT he's so smexy ~*drools*~ but thats the sad....sad...depressing truth.

Well, with the sand it's hard to argue with his strength. He has great mastery over chakra control, and can manipulate a huge amount much more accurately than the other characters in Naruto. And do you remember what Kakashi said in the manga when Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke were doing the tree exercise ?
Whoever can control their chakra the best, and be able to use it to it's best potential is the better ninja.
But...physically....Gaara is weaker because he lacks training in taijutsu. He probably knows the basics, but he doesn't appear strong enough to imploy them as well as some.

[Hypocritical Angel] This is complicated but... I would say no. I must say he seems weak without the sand but... I don't think he'd be worthless without it. I haven't read a lot of Manga's with him in it yet but I doubt all he's realy good at is controlling sand and it's movement. I agree...

My best freind said Gaara was weak without the sand during the fight with Lee, now he's 6 feet underground twisted nah just kidding but I did punch him sweatdrop hehe reflex.
