Can you mention any martial art film that isn't cheesy?
PostPosted: Tue Jul 17, 2007 7:50 am

... Not really. Almost all of the MA movies I have seen have some clichéd thing involved in it.

Fearless was based off of true events but even it had filler stuff just to add movie time.

The most recent I've seen was SPL which is a good year or two old actually. Beautiful Boxer is a good one that I've been meaning to buy a copy of. Money's been tight so I haven't been keeping up with films as of late though.

One shouldn't confuse the limited budget of Hong Kong cinema or the stylized fantasy of the Wu Xia genre with the penny pinching frugality of the cut and paste exploitative rubbish that directors like Godfrey Ho released (Duel of the Tough being one of them).

There are plenty of good martial art films, with nearly twice as many crap ones flooding the market as well. Just because your selection is limited to whatever you can find at Blockbuster or the bargain bin at Walmart doesn't mean they don't exist.

I didn't mean bad per se, just cheesy.

I'd say that any martial art films plot, is by definition cheesy. "His entire family gets wiped out by chineses gansters, so he trains day and night to get his revengeeeeee" etc etc.

Edit: Oh and answer that pm I sent you and you're more than welcome to the guild smile

In that case, again I reiterate...

SPL (awfully known as Killzone in the US) an intense action film centered around an obsessed cop and his personal war against a mob boss that results in a climatic and Shakespearian like tragic finale.

Beautiful Boxer is Muay Thai film based on the true story of a thai boxer trying to win money so that he can get a sex change.

Hell even the Zhang Yimou films are far more artistic and complex than the cliched martial arts revenge flick.

I mean yes, the main draw of a martial arts flick is the fight choreography and some would argue that watching a MA film for the plot is like watching porn for the dialog. That's not to say that all martial art films are trite, there's a good deal out there that's original whether it be through plot (SPL), cinematography (Hero), choreography (Drunken Master 2, Ong-Bak), or even by narrative genre (mixing comedy with martial arts such as seen in Shaolin Soccer).

Mate, I just died from cheese poisoning...

Dont get me wrong, I've see all the films you've mentioned except for SPL (which is now on my list to watch) and I love them all, many have a lot to offer besides the cheese. But they are cheesy, but then I like cheese mrgreen

How the movies I recalled fit your definition of "cheese" puzzles me.
