A shadow passes over Rika's face, changing the softness that was beginning to show there as a sign of growing familiarity with Melody back to its usual impenetrable blankness.
"Your father, Boyan, is the Celestial Oracle," she explains, "and the Celestial Oracle of our Empire, Hyouka, impregnated Rishi with me."

"Oh," Melody says, fumbling with the hem of her sleeve as she casts a glance at the twins (who are still happily chewing their stuffed ducks)
She wonders how alike they are, but... Well. Judging from Rika's reaction, they're not all that alike.
But it is kind of funny, she admits, that Rika kind of sort of looks like Melody's brother. It's the hair, definitely. And, Melody supposes, though her memory is somewhat fuzzy since it's been so long since she'd seen him... but she remembers him being serious and blunt like Rika.
And he called Daddy "Old man".

"Is he a scholar, too?" Rika asks, giving a slightly unnatural chuckle, as if trying to shake off the darkening presence of that man from their conversation.
"Where is he now?"

Well, Melody doesn't really know; they were still young when they were separated... But! Tsutchi was very, very, very smart, and he was always playing with technologicomatical thingamadoodles. Like his Game Boy! So who knows, maybe he is!
...But... she doesn't know where he is, either... He didn't come back with her mother. emo

... Rika bites her tongue, not asking if this is another thing her mother decided Melody did not need to know.
Instead, she inquires, with an instinctive touch to her monocle, "What is a Game Boy?"

It's a little box with a screen on it, and you can load game cartridges in and play all sorts of games!
Melody isn't very good at most games because she didn't learn to read, but... She knows numbers! So she can play SOME games.

"I see."
Or, rather, Rika would like to see. "Where might I be able to find such a Game Boy?"

Melody thiiiiinks... they should be rather easy to find, actually. Except she thinks they're now called the Gee Boi?

"I shall look for one the next time I visit the Market, then," replies Rika with a nod.
... Hum... games... toys... that reminds Rika of that question she wanted to ask about the duck--
... She stares in horror at the oozing twins.

Oh. Oh dear. sweatdrop
Melody once again kneels in front of the babies, taking the ducks for an instant (much to their protests) so she can wipe their chins once again.
--What about the ducks?

Errrr... "I wonder why your father acquired such an affinity for them? Do they represent something in particular in the symbology of your family?"

Oh?
...Oh.
Melody covers her face with one hand. Ohhhhhh.
Well, this was when Grandma June was about to adopt Daddy, when he was just a little little boy and Melody wasn't even born yet. But the story goes that Grandma June and Boyan bonded immediately and before she adopted him, she gave him a squeaky rubber duck.
And he was so happy that a girl gave him a present that he decided it would be his best friend.
So Daddy likes ducks because they remind him of Squeeky. 3nodding

"Hmmmm~"
While Rika was somewhat hoping for a deep myth or legend or synecdoche or something from the annals of Gaian myth, there is a faint smile on her face as she listens to the retelling.
"Then it is a scrap from childhood," she asks, "to symbolize a fast friendship?"

Pretty much, yeah... sweatdrop
Most of the things Daddy likes remind him of long ago; strawberries and cream, green eggs and ham, soap, cardboard...

Is that remarkable? It seems natural to Rika to cling to pleasant things from one's childhood...
... Does Melody not share that sentiment?
