Callix was too confused to try and determine what the creature was talking about. He didn't know who Sticks was or anything about Rivers. He shook his head in exasperation at the hopelessness of it all, noticing finally that the water was getting too high. Dusty was too short to withstand this, and she wasn't responding. He knew it was a longshot, and Dusty never took well to orders, especially from him, but they had to get out.

"Dustin, mon frere, get to higher ground, s'il vous plait..." he stammered through clenched teeth. He was trying desperately not to panic, but the instinct to take Lethe and flee was very strong indeed.

Backing up, he tried to take Lethe with him. "We'll drown if we stay here." he whispered.

With wordless obediance, Dusty slogged her way through the static to one of the card tables at the back of the room, clambering first onto a chair, then onto the table itself. Here, at least, she wasn't going to be in danger of drowning for a little while yet.

"I don't drown," Lethe snapped, a complete lie, but not one she was going to relinquish. Her voice dropped to a hoarse whisper, "Y..you try the doors, see if there are any windows..."

How else were they going to get rid of this water? She wasn't about to try drinking it all, blegh!

Even more madenning was this creature's complete ambivalence to her, and her friends, and what they were. It did not believe in reason or gods, it could not be tricked or blackmailed or manipulated... "What do you want? I mean, what do you want that will make you leave?"

It was useless talking to it, it wasn't as if she were going to get any answers from it, but she was far too stubborn to let this thing get the best of her. It could take Dusty, and Callix, and everyone else in the whole world, but it would. Not. Take. Her. She stood resolutely, pointedly ignoring the water level as it rose.

In answer to Lethe's question, there was for a moment only silence and stillness, and the constant rise of the water in the room. Then, something happened.

The water in front of Lethe and Callix began to rise. Not as the water all around them was; like a bubble lifting out of tar, a lump was formed in the static, climbing higher and higher until its top was nearly pressing against the ceiling. Static rolled off of it in waterfalls as its round shape became more and more defined as a mish-mased figure hidden in the static.

Suddenly thunderous, the voice snapped the static surrounding the form; a small but powerful wave of liquid swept out from where the creature stood, lapping waist-high and threatening to topple those yet on the ground. Flickering occasionally, as if still existing as an unclear image on the television, the creature from the screen now stood before them in flesh and blood, a lump of flesh and teeth and mouths that seemed to float on the top of the static in the room, moving only through the grace of the currents there and the small, flailing limbs that appeared out of its mouths, creatures trapped in prisons of teeth and seeking escape.

The waves of water loosened Callix's grip on Lethe, though his did his best to not let go. Abyss, in all its horrific glory, made the incubus feel tiny in comparison. The child tried not to shake, and knew there was no way he could even hope to win against something of that size and strength. The newly-awakened beast within him knew it too, and knew there was nothing he could do.

As much as he hated to admit it, this was Lethe's problem, and not something he could help with. Pushing as much as he could through the oncoming waves, Callix tried to pull Lethe back again. They couldn't stay here.

"Dustin! Find a way out, please!"

Callix's order came just as the deerkitten had lept ahead of him, forcing through the water to bring her sword to the defense of her friends. Before she could reach the threat, however, his order came through loud and clear- taking a few steps back, still standing in front of Lethe and Callix but not taking the offensive to the monster, Dustin began scouting around for some form of exit. No windows, both doors shut (and probably impossible to open)... what other escapes could there be, short of breaking down a wall? Maybe the building had an attic or crawlspace, but unless there was an access convienently built into this room, there still wasn't any way to hope for it... and besides, everyone was too small to reach something like that.

Lethe visibly winced as the water began to lift her off her feet, uselessly flailing her legs in an attempt to feel solid ground. Stacks of videos and DVDs floated up along with her -- wasn't there anything to help? The Abyss already had the TV (and what would she do with it anyway, play episodes of The Brady Bunch at it until it keeled over and died?) and the refridgerator in the corner probably wouldn't help... And what power did she -- or Callix, or Dusty -- have?

Beliefs, beliefs, those brought the Fa'e to life... That wouldn't help, would it? They couldn't think it to death. Quickly running out of ideas, Lethe gave the water one last frustrated kick and started shrieking, desperate and high-pitched, "THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!"

Lethe's words seemed to have little, if any, affect on the creature. Of course, the fact that she had no holy symbol, Bible, or devout following of the Christian religion probably contributed to that.

The water was rising yet, and with it, the deerkitten's effectiveness in battle was all but gone. The level was already coming Dustin's full height, and as such, there was little that the little tot could do to effectively fight the creature, even if that were her current goal.

Dustin was, however, able to spot out what she was looking for; a small trapdoor in the ceiling, leading up to the attic. There was a long chain dangling from it, presumably to be grabbed and pulled down by anyone interested in going up there- but much as she'd predicted, it was too high up for any of the children to reach....

Callix sighed, exasperated. "Lethe, je t'aime, mais parfois..." When it seemed all hope was lost, Dustin, brightest child in the universe, had spotted a way out. The incubus wrapped his tail around one of Lethe's wrists and pulled. The Christ-compelling just wasn't working! He attempted to swim towards the table he thought was there before the water began to rise. Swimming blindly, his knee slammed into it and he fell on top, finding it to have a shallow sheet of water. Whether or not he was able to pull Lethe behind him, he hated being the leader.

He stuck a hand out to the unresponsive toddler. "Dustin, grab my hand. I need you to help me grab the chain... remember the games at Prom...?" he asked through gritted teeth, stretching out as far as his body would allow to the deerkitten.

Dustin, in the meantime, was having a good ol' time breathing bubbles. Strangely, where Callix or Lethe might tread water, Dusty just... stood. Almost like she were too dense to float, the deerkitten was in far deeper than she could handle- and, in her unresponsive state, didn't seem inclined to do anything about it. Just stood there, pointing at the little trapdoor she'd spotted, practically swallowed by the static.

Then something clicked. And the entire situation changed.

Dusty disappeared under the static altogether with a flurry of bubbles- that flurry being the only thing, of course, that prevent the room from filling with her sudden shrieks of terror. Underwatershewasunderwatershewasunderwater! She knew when this had happened, somehow; her memories were fresh and vibrant, even though she had been anything but herself when they were being created. But dear LORD she couldn't breathe and she was under water and she didn't know which way was which and she was going to die and SOMEONE was going to die WITH her for this was all she ******** knew....

Something grabbed onto Callix's leg from beneath the water's surface.

Remembering the motions involved in swimming, Lethe kicked and splashed and swum as best she could after Callix, allowing him to lead. "Come on, Dusty!" She yelled as best she could during the brief periods of time her head was above the static-water.

"Callix, get her! And keep her afloat! If we can avoid the thingy, eventually this will rise high enough that we can reach the rope..." Hopefully they'd survive long enough to try.

A sudden motion by her legs startled her, and Lethe stared wide-eyedly into the water, only recognizing the dark, submerged shape when her terpid mind pieced two and two together. "Pull! Just pull, I'll--"

And without really thinking about it, she took a big mouthful of air and submerged, pulling away from Callix's grasp and spinning in the water until she was (as best she could figure) facing Dusty, and facing downwards. She swam a short distance downwards until she came to what she hoped was Dusty's figure, and wrapping her arms around her waist, kicked as hard as she could to try and propel the two up.

The surface of the water rippled; a new image flickered onto the far-off monitor of the television, only for Callix's eyes (since both ladies were, of course, underwater).

Two human forms, mashed together, with the sound of a light moan leading through the room-

Ah, great. Looks like someone'd tuned it to the "naughty" channels. This had to be Rune's fault, somehow.

The image was cut off promptly by the bulk of the creature sharing the room. Slowly but surely, it was paddling its way nearer to where the children sat; it might just be able to make it over before Lethe resurfaced with Dusty, in fact....

The incubus sat, transfixed by the images on the television. His attention frayed and for a few seconds, he was as unresposive as the toddler. But the rampant need to get moving brought him back into reality. He blinked several times before he pulled his leg out of the water. They had to hurry! The creature was drawing too close too quickly.

His tail was longer than his arms, so Callix stuck his tail into the water to help make the female's ascent to the surface that much faster. Hopefully the bright red tip would help them find the surface.

Hopefully.

Detaching Dusty from Callix's leg was a bit difficult- so far as scenes to wake up to, being underwater was more a nightmare than anything for the deerkitten- but, realizing who it was that was tugging at her waist, Dustin screwed her nerves and let go at last, allowing herself to be hauled upwards. Albeit difficult work, it seemed like Lethe ought to be able to get her to the surface (though keeping her there could be a problem- Dusty was heavy for her size!)

Lethe, realizing she would very, very soon need air, quickly redoubled her efforts to get her and her current luggage to the surface. Her eyes were squeezed tight, not wanting to see what the static-liquid looked like from the inside, and so she missed Callix's tail completely.

So, when she finally did break surface, hauling the deerkitten up so she could, you know, not drown and die and mark Lethe as the One Who Let Dusty Die Shun Her Shun Her!, Lethe immediately sputtered indignantly at her companion. "Hades Callix, help her, I can't keep her up forever!!!!!!"

Even the extra exclamation marks were audible, as was her exhaustion.
