AriaStarSong midara the happy banshee My least favorite thing is urban sprawl. We're clear-cutting forests left and right, and we seem to have no inkling that if we keep cutting, forests will eventually disappear. I saw a video about the clear-cutting of Oregon's ancient forests, and the loggers kept saying, "The trees have always been here and they always will." It really boggles my mind that someone could say that when you can see the bald mountains. What I really dislike about urban sprawl is what it does to the wildlife. Of course, I hate clear cutting as well, I can see those bald mountains that you speak of from most places in my hometown (where I currently am! YAY for home!), but people's reaction to wildlife showing up when we've removed their habitat just baffles me. As the urban boundries grow and grow, the animals have no where left to live, so they move into the cities and adapt to city life. People are all confused when they see a Coyote running around through the suburbs of Portland, but where did you think they would end up, when you took over their habitat? In my neighborhood Coyotes are considered a nuisance, as are the deer, since they wander through people's yards and eat their flowers. We also have bobcats, elk, all sorts of little furry rodents and birds, and a cougar (though I haven't heard any spottings of her lately. Could be she just moved to a different part of her hunting ground for a while). People freak out about the wildlife "invading" their homes, but really, what have we done? Invaded their homes. Idiot humans. rolleyes
But as Devin said, we do have the full capability to change the world. We should take advantage of that and make it for the better.

But as Devin said, we do have the full capability to change the world. We should take advantage of that and make it for the better. I agree. And I have full intentions, upon returning to school at the end of the holidays, of harassing the president of SAU until he tells me what I need to do to start a recycling program. 3nodding Right now I'm just enjoying throwing birdseed out onto the snow, and going down to the pond at regular intervals to break up the ice for the ducks who apparently decided that Migration was too much work this year. (crazy ducks...) They keep a little bit of a space open for them to swim in, but it gets smaller every day if my brother and I don't go down and break it up some, and if it gets too small, our ducks won't have a way to get away from predators like bobcats, so we're trying to keep it open, which is hard to do when it hasn't gotten about 30 in about 3 weeks... Oh well. I love the cold. xd

What I hate about the world is the greedy, disgusting nature of humans. The need to dominate, destroy, and create war. When was the last time an animal started a war?

Well..uh...yeah. So far I haven't done anything new in particular...Just continuing to whole turn-off-lights-and-recycle drill....and I've kept the Christmas lights on at a minimum. And I've also been checking up on my environmental club and taking some leadership in some of the projects we're doing and going to continue after break. 3nodding

Wow, it's been a while since I posted. Sorry guys, this internship is keeping me busy.
But because of this internship, I've needed to vent. I absolutely love what I'm doing. I don't think I could do it for the rest of my life, but nonetheless it's rewarding. But here's my qualm. We spend hours and hours repairing trails that have been created illegally, putting sweat and hard labor into what we do. We work in the snow, the heat, the rain, the freezing cold, the massive winds, and every other possible weather event you can think of. We swing picks around and dig holes in rock hard soil, sometimes breaking our tools in the process, all to restore a once peaceful desert. All to help the wildlife and plants that once thrived and are now threatened by humans on four-wheelers and dirt bikes. And what do they do after all our work? Run over it. They drive right through the bushes we planted, and very deliberately. We repair it, they do it again. Then they complain that we're taking public land away from them. I just don't get it. It's so frustrating and makes me so angry that hours of hard work is destroyed in seconds. But we keep on doing it.
And what makes people think it's OK to throw so much garbage out there? In less than a year, the Desert Restoration Corp has removed over 2,000 pounds of garbage, and that's not including the abandoned cars and appliances left to rust. We also found a cow dead. Shot and left to die. Not even taken by the hunter for meat. Just shot. Probably for fun or in a bit of a drunken stupor. Oh yeah, we find more beer bottles than anything else out there. It really makes me sick.
OK, I could go on forever, but I had to vent. Sorry, but it felt good to get out. 3nodding

I agree with many of the things other people have said in their posts. I get so upset and angery with the way the human race abuses the beautiful Earth and treats her like a rubbish bin. cry
Deforestation, climate change, habitat destruction, road building, pollution, GM crops, animal cruelty...etc. etc..
Makes me feel ashamed to be a human!
I guess all we can do individually is do our best to make things better, to educate people, to physically get out there and start clearing things up. Even little things like clearing litter away somewhere close by, Buying food sourced as locally as possible with as little packaging as possible, not flying on holiday, getting the bus instead of driving, planting trees, writing to politicians and demonstrating to save nature areas. I hope we CAN make a difference.

What if I went up and trashed their place? After their day at work, what if I went to their computer (assuming they have one) and delete EVERY file? What if I went up and shot them for fun? scream
