im still one of those that thinks steampunk music technically doesnt exist.
the only thing that makes a band steampunk is image and lyrics, steampunk can not really be defined by any style of music.
if you ask me all the bands that could be properlly classed as steampunk have probably never heard of it I.E Tom Waits.
As many of you have already said, mixing modern music with old orchestral stuff has been done so many times that it isnt really that impressive anymore.
im not doubting that these are all really good bands:

Dr Steel: the pretentiousness is all part of his act.

Abney Park: they are rather up themselves, and i also loath their mass marketing of merchendise.

Emille Autumn: sorry but i just can not get on with her music, i find it tired and boring.

vernian process: similar to the above.

deadly nightshade botanical society: rammstein with a female singer.

ghost fire: take away the costumes and their just another boring soft rock band.

Voltaire: same as above.

Voltaire is not by any stretch of the imagination "soft rock" but whatever.

Eh, that kinda busts it down into sub genres, say for instance steampunk rock.

But true, take away the showmanship, and those bands are back to how they started.

True. Nothing is quite as awful as a garb nazi

User Image

But oddly enough I like nazi garb... David Bowie did it. why do the bad guys always have the best clothing? The Empire, The Nazis, Cobra Commander, Dracula... need I go on? Hellsing Cosplayers do it... does it make me a bad person? Maybe. Do I care? Not in the least bit.

Haha. I meant someone who is uptight about keeping close to outfit accuracy.

Oh I understood fully, though I thank you for your clarification... sometimes it doesn't take much to have me go off on a tangent. For that I apologize... but come on... Bad guys... Awesome clothes, right?

I agree to most of these... I tend to listen to mood music, to me I don't really care what they are categorized as.

I kind of like Abney Park... So, I think that's the only bit I don't agree about. But then again, I know little of the band outside the music. I don't care what musicians do outside the studio.

Dr Steel I freaking adore because of his whole image he has going.

Most of the others I haven't heard about, but judging from that Gothic Lolita song, I can say that that Emillie whatever's music isn't up to my taste... but then again, I tend to listen to mostly black metal and such like so most of these bands are pretty pussyfied.

I don't find any of them to be 'pretentious' as you call it. None of them are truely steampunk either.
Emilie autumn is Neo victorian put into an asylum.
Dr. Steele is a loony toon who wants to take over the world with his robot army. Doesn't really have much to do with steampunk, except for the fact that he himself is a steampunkee.

Voltaire isn't steampunk. at all.

Go listen to Abney park-- they try to use eclectic sounds and electrical whirring, as well as litteral steam sounds to add to their lyrics, which include songs about airship pirates and tessla coils.
They're not pretentious. They're trying to create the genre.
