I haven't tried downloading new stuff for sims2 yet. I'm sure the process is a little different than for sims1 downloads, and I don't feel like looking into it right now. Do some of the sites describe exactly what you have to do and where stuff goes, and troubleshooting if it doesn't show up? Maybe I'll just wait for expansions. wink I don't dare break the game... I remember some of the things I downloaded for sims1 even broke the game to where the sims wouldn't DO anything on their own unless you told them to, but if I removed that one item (I forget if it was a plant or a car) then everything would return to normal.

they are quite specific about where files need to go, i think that's why mine aren't working! because my file name didn't have the 'downloads' bit on the end, so i shall experiment today and see if i get any results, then i'll report back wink some of the sites i was browsing when i should have been in bed this morning have new wallcoverings and complete furniture sets, including rugs!! which there are none of on the new game, so i'm determined to get them working!

Oooh, if you ever get it figured out, please post your secrets! That'd be wonderful to have more full furniture sets and rugs!

well i haven't got anywhere with it yet! the process isn't difficult, you open the file into a temporary folder then unzip it into a downloads folder that you need to create within your sims2 folder, just seems my PC doesn't want to play along!

take a look at these sites though and you'll see there's plenty of stuff about for you to use, though some/alot of it is is pretty gross!

www.thesimsresource.com - you have to register to download from this one, and the free registration only gives you access to 3% of available items. but that 3% included 340 full room sets!! some of which are really nice

www.lerilai.com - more furniture, objects and also artwork, full wall murals which i can't wait to see, and a few clothes.

download the update from the sims 2 website also, that gives you a few new things throughout the game, and gives you the sims bodyshop thing that you need to be able to use any downloaded items from other sites.

this is all far too technical for a computer dunce like me!

Argh I need to find my disc!

Although, if I got Sims University, I wouldn't have to.. (unless of course I had to reinstall it all sometime.)

I wanted to say thank you first to jellysundae for the link to thesimsresource or whatnot. Secondly, I would like to put a small tutorital up for y'all about successfully downloading from that site! (Though the base of what I'm saying goes for all downloads, I think.)

Okay, first you need to understand that there are TWO types of files you will download. We will discuss FILE PACKAGES right now. These will have anything for the bodyshop or any objects. The actual file you download will be a .zip file. I suggest saving these on your desktop, as they are easiest to access there. When you are ready to install your file(s), double click on the lil icon for it on your desktop. Now, if you downloaded just ONE thing (Say, a new pair of jeans), the window that pops up will show you that one file.... you'll notice under "type" it says FILE PACKAGE. Be sure to click on the file (not the lil folder you see above it), then click on the button EXTRACT TO.

Now, here is the tricky part. Let me use myself as an example. On our computer, we have three windows usernames. Hubby, Boy, and Talencia. When I click on EXTEACT TO, the first folder I click on is Talencia's Documents. So for the rest of you, you would double-click on YOURUSERNAME DOCUMENTS. When that opens up, double-click on EA GAMES. When that opens, double-click on SIMS 2. When that opens, double-click on DOWNLOADS. And that is where you want to save the file.

The NEXT time you want to save a FILE PACKAGE, when you click EXTRACT TO, don't do that whole spiel I did again. All you have to do is click on the drop down menu of where it wants to put it, and you will see a string something like:
Username Documents/EA Games/Sims2/Downloads
Click on that and save!

Now, the other type of file you'll be dealing with is handled differently than the file packages. These are what walls and floors will be in. When you double-click the zip icon, you'll notice the file TYPE is FILE SIMS2PACK. Instead of clicking extract to, double-click the file. After a moment, a Sim-looking window will pop-up, asking you if you want to install this file, or cancel. Click install, and in a mere eye-blink it will say it was successful. Click OK and you are done!

If the file you first downloaded is a BASKET, or a set of items, when you first double-click the file, it will come up with MORE .zip files. That's fine. Just treat each of those like I am instructing you, since each of those is a single item.

Does all this make sense? How can I improve my post so it better helps y'all? Got any questions? Let me know! I hope this helps! I avoided telling you what NOT to do, so as to keep the confusion to a minimum. However, there is a trap or two that are easy to fall into accidentally (do NOT put these files in the Sims2 folder under Program Files! They won't work there.), but if you need help with that too, just let me know!

oh my, WAY too much reading for right now! but i shall hopefully get up in time to take it all in tomorrow morning. i still haven't been able to get any of the things i've downloaded to show up on the game crying well apart from one small package, this is a sims custom content thing, which has given me...green eyes which look the same shade as there is anyway, a pretty frock and purple skin!! EWW. but i shall read through Tal's past when i'm more alert and have another attempt in the .llight of day.
i really like some of the things on the sims resource so i'm determined to get them to work!!!

right, so now i'm reading this through in the cold light of day i have a few questions. most of the files i download contain multiple items.

what i have been doing was opening the file because i had trouble saving it anywhere, i'd get a window pop up saying'windows cannot open this file'

so i'd open it instead, then click on the link in the top lefthand corner of window that says extract all files, then save them to my docs/ea games/sims2/downloads

but nothing happens!

if i go into my docs and open a file and double click on it the sims custom content window opens, saying double click on what you want to install, but there's nothing in the window to choose from!

any ideas?

Hmmm... how/why are you having trouble saving them? And it's not a good idea to extract all files, due to the fact that each needs to be handled individually, especially if those bigger files contain files of both types I mentioned. It DOES sound like you are putting them in the right folder at least, so that's good! When I worked with the Sims custom content window, it was always just for ONE FILE, and so I was never told to pick one. It sounds like maybe your larger zip file isn't unzipping, or some such. Do you have a zip program?

i use winzip, so the wizard window opens, i shall look into this further when i can concerntrate on it at the weekend, several sites i've looked at say the file you need is the one ending in package, so i expext i'm just filling that download folder up with clutter! i shall be so excited if i finally get the damn thing to work that i won't know what to do with myself!!

***BREAKING NEWS*** jelly has finally managed to get things to appear on her sims game!!!

OMG, what a performance it is too!

i now find that i have to deal with each item individually, which is a total pain when i'm downloading a room set consisting of maybe 10 objects, 3 floors and 2 walls,it's a tedious process but it is worth it in the end when you have lots of new things to play with.

i may have another look shortly and see what else i can find biggrin

We got our tax return on Friday and finally were able to buy ourselves some much-needed furniture and appliances for our new RL home, plus we bought each other our overdue Valentine's Day gifts, which for me meant Sims University and Sims Superstar (from the first sims), and for Jason meant a pile of Transformers he was wanting. So yay! When I get home this evening, I can install Sims University and start playing that! (I'm at Jason's mom's this weekend.) And head's up for any of you who still play Sims1 and never got all the expansions.. EVERY expansion for Sims1 is on sale at Target for $9.99!! xd

WOOHOO, you figured it out! ::cheers merrily:: And yes yes YES, it is a royal pain! I downloaded tons of stuff... literally hundreds of items/floors/walls.... and had my hand nearly give out on me as I kept having to unzip each and every file! Course, it didn't help that for the first half of them, I didn't realize the drop-down menu would provide the location I wanted. I kept going through the whole menu each time to get to the proper folder they went in. I felt like such a FOOL when I realized it could have been TWO clicks instead of six or eight each time!

I'm on Jade's computer (next to mine) right now as I install Sims University on my computer. I was appalled for a minute that it asked for my original Sims2 discs during installation, BUT it asked for disc #4, which I have! I have 2, 3, and 4, just not 1, as that's the play disc which was in my computer just prior to moving, and I took it out for safekeeping, and put it.. somewhere. neutral How 'safe' was that?

Off to plaaaaaayyyyyyy! xd
