The answer to her question had left her blinking. It wasn't so much the information but the way it was given. You sounded so sure about the air that it left little doubt in her mind that he had experienced the difference first hand. Her jaw went slightly slack in wonder as her eyes wandered to his wings. She had been able to tell that they were different from hers but hadn't ever thought much about them. Now she was curious just how high those wings could carry him.
She didn't ask. At the moment there were other things that need answering, from her. "I don't lose my breath." She said with a slight giggle. "I just get all lightheaded and then whooooooo crash." She nodded a few times. Never once had she felt out of breath after crash landing. Mostly she just found herself suffering from a fit of giggles once she was back on the ground.
"And...I'm sure someone will come eventually..." While she had said it she wasn't completely sure she believed it. Most of her did but the last little bit wasn't sure. Crashing was almost a guarantee when she took to the skies, but perhaps she would take his advice and fly maybe a foot or two lower. "But...I guess I could try...goin a bit lower..." She wasn't sure it would help but it couldn't hurt to try right? You seemed like he was very smart. A bit odd like her, but smart. And it seemed he could fly high.
Her earlier question came shooting back into her mind like a star and she suddenly bounced, eyes wide with eyebrows raised. "Oh! Ohohoh! Howhighhaveyougone?" She asked quickly all in once breath. This was something that needed answering! It needed answering more then she needed to think about taking steps to avoid crashing in a horrible way. Her wings fluttered and shook in anticipation on her back a little thing she had received from her mother.

He'd gotten through to her! Tact had paid off and Zhu could feel that bubbling in his belly that told him he was satisfied. He hadn't upset her and he hadn't insulted her, instead he'd managed to convince her that flying a little lower was good for her and it wouldn't shatter her dreams or ruin the fun of it. There were few stallions in the world who possessed such a diplomatic approach but he could thank his father for the imperial up bringing and the numerous lessons in etiquette. Seishuku hadn't lied when he had informed him that someday those manners would be useful.
...So far in every encounter his manners had excelled!
Nevertheless, he stole a small smile as she conceded defeat and shook his head. "Indeed, you don't have to fly much lower, just a little bit makes a difference." He agreed. That being said he had little time to continue with his train of thought as she appeared to have an epiphany. No sooner had he finished this sentence than her eyes had lit up and she had shot a question of her own at him. Suffice to say the breathless manner in which it was provided forced him to back track and pause briefly to translate but eventually he figured it out.
"I have never really dwelled on it," he replied honestly and rolled his shoulders in a light shrug. "On occasions I would brush with the clouds but as to how high I've gone... I honestly can't say," he smiled wrily at this and cleared his throat. Truth be told with the exception of the occasional aerial dance routine he tended to keep his hooves on the ground where he could play his Leaf Flute!

"All the way in to the clouds?" Malta's voice was dreamy sounding. For good reason. Her mind was begging to wander off to more fanciful places. Soaring in the clouds was something she had never done but it was something she had always wanted to. The clouds had always seemed so much closer to the sky then she ever got. Even when she was flying with the birds the clouds were always higher than her playing with the great blue above.
"Are they fluffy?" She asked in the same tone as she slowly inched her head upward to stare at the sky. "They look fluffy...like sheep...and kinda like snow..." A dreamily content smile had settled itself on her lips and a hazy, unfocused look had claimed her eyes.
She wanted to touch the clouds. She wanted to roll around in them and play with the sky and it's celestial occupants with them. It would be like a dream. A tiny voice in the back of her mind reminded her that it would only ever be a dream. With a shrug of her wings she silenced it and slowly came back to reality. Even if it was a dream it was a happy one and that was good enough for her.
"Do you play in them or just tickle their bellies with your wings when you go by?" She giggled a little at the thought. Perhaps the clouds sang the same way his leaf friend did when they were tickled. That would be quite amazing!

He didn't often fly so high, preferring to keep his hooves on the ground it was rare that he would go that high. It made it difficult to encounter others and even more awkward to acquire their stories. By default he flew faster and higher than most imbued with wings and it was quite a strain to slow down in the air; thus he had always found it easier to avoid it entirely. That being said he could recall bits and pieces of information that she may regard as relevant to her queries even if they weren't as dramatic as she would have preferred. For a start the clouds might have looked fluffy but they really weren't when you got close to them - nor were they terribly comfortable either.
"No, they are not fluffy," he admitted after a few moments of consideration. Having shuffled through all the memories in his head he had settled on the ones he was looking for. Shifting his weight, he tossed his hair out of his eyes and then finally canted his head to one side. "When you get close to them you find that they are more like a really thick mist," he continued. He'd never flown through them and only on rare occasions had his wings physically touched them in what he could only describe as moments that he'd rather forget. The only reason he recalled them was to learn from his mistakes!
"They are incredibly cold," he added. "It is rather uncomfortable to tickle them and those who do often rile them into a disapproving state - why else do you think they roar instead of sing?" he asked lightly. He was of course referring to thunderstorms, he could only assume that it was the provocative nature of some of his kind that caused such behaviour. "The one time I do recall touching them the edges of my wings frooze," he mused. It had been a rather uncomfortable experience but enough of a shock for him to learn not to do it again.
"So I would say your observation of 'snow' is much more accurate, nyah?"

It was impossible for the young mare to hide the disappointment from her face. Every piece of her had been hoping for fluffy cotton like clouds. Once more her wings drooped like soggy flower petals and a light frown found it's way on to her features. The truth could be ignored and for a moment she considered pretending that the facts she was hearing from You weren't real. That wouldn't change them though. Even if she chose not to accept them they would still be there. With a deep breath she let the bit of hope for fluffy clouds drift away from her.
It wasn't a complete loss. She just had to look at it the right way. Luckily for her You did a spectacular job at providing enough wonderful facts to make it right once more. "Oh my! Is that why they always growl like that?" Never once had she considered that the clouds were so touchy and testy though it did make sense. "Kinda mean too...freezing your wing. That's not nice!" With these observations she was having second thoughts about wanting to go play with the clouds. They didn't seem nice at all. In fact, they were probably bullying the sky and the stars and everything! What jerks.
"And...I don't think they're like snow at all!" She added on. "The snow's nice and pure and fun. Not grouchy!" The more she thought on the subject of the clouds the more her wings lifted until she looked less like a sad flower and more like her normal self.

There was something to be said about the level of positivity within the mare's manner. It was something to be admired, this skill that she possessed. In the Kawani lands it was rare to encounter any being capable of remaining so optimistic when their dreams had been 'corrected' so to speak. She was definitely a rare breed and if he had possessed the ability to applaud her and to compliment her without appearing partonising then he would have done so. However, for the sake of argument he did permit another bemused smile to flicker on to his lips in response to her further observations - her naivity was endearing.
He made no move to correct her on any further comments she might make though, he had done more than enough in this encounter and would sooner she didn't lose the light within her eyes. Mayhaps in time she would come to realise that all things could be grouchy, growly and unimpressed with life but until that time... He was more than happy to let her dwell on grouchy clouds and fluffy snow, it was better this way (and more fun).
"Well, you could say that sometimes the growls they make are like song - just a very deep bass sound," he mused for a few moments before motioning to the snow beneath her own hooves. "Much like the snow crunches, cracks and swishes depending on how one treats it, no?"

She considered this for a moment but eventually just shook her head. Malta couldn't quite see it as a song. It sounded far too threatening to her and music was meant to bring joy to others not strike fear into their hearts. "Maybe it's a song for them...but it sounds awfully scary to me." A little light giggle escaped her mouth before she turned her attention to the snow.
With a smile she shifted slightly then lifted her hoof to press it into a patch of undisturbed snow. Her ears twitched merrily as the crunching sound reached them. This she could see as a song quite easily. That or... "It sounds like it's laughing a little bit..." Again she brought her hoof away from the ground only to press it down elsewhere, this time more slowly. The snow crunched and squeaked under the pressure and Malta answered the funny sound with an airy laugh of her own. "See?"
She continued to press onto the snow until she ran out of clean patches near her. Making the snow talk and laugh and sing made her happy and she wondered if maybe it would bring a smile to her mom and grandfather as well. If she wanted to show them, however, that meant leaving. This was a bit of a problem.
Her dark purple eyes drifted away from the ground and snow and over to the rosy maned stallion. "We should share the chattering snow with others...right?" She asked biting her lower lip and gazing at him hopefully. She didn't imagine that he would object but she didn't want to just leave all of a sudden. That would be mean and You was her friend. It was wrong to be mean to friends.

"I assure you, the clouds will not harm you with their thunderous roars," he replied softly. He could understand that not everyone could appreciate all the quirks of nature but he could reassure them at the very least. Perhaps a bass sound was not suited to Malta but he would sooner she not be fearful of it's performance when it provided such dramatic shows to remind those below that mother nature's extravagance extended beyond the tree canopies. This aside, he was content to observe her as she experimented with the snow and provided an agreeable smile as she made reference to the song that it carried. She was definitely a alto if he had ever seen one, inclined towards the higher lilts of nature.
"Of course, the treasures that exist within nature should never be hidden from view," his reply was quick. Certain of his answer he was an avid believer in bringing the wonders of the world to those who wouldn't normally consider them. If he could encourage another to share such treasures with her friends then perhaps in time it would extend so far as for all to hear the music! It was perhaps an unrealistic goal but every individual was entitled to their dreams and Zhu found comfort and warmth in the knowledge that music could unite nations if anything...she should share it with everyone!
"It should be appreciated, the Great Mother provided it to us so all could enjoy it. It is only fair to extend her blessing to others who may not necessarily have considered it until now, yes?" His piece said he allowed these words to sink into their mares psyche. He suspected that this would be their parting words but they were not filled with sadness or apprehension, if anything they were filled with anticipation and a renewed sense of purpose. He couldn't ask for anything more than that.

While his answer was not nearly as simple as the answers she was used to with others it got the message across all the same. In fact, he got it across a bit clearer. It didn't leave room for her to wonder if he was simply answering because that was what she wanted to hear. It was all him and he was giving her the all clear it seemed.
A large grin had plastered itself on her face by the time he had started speaking once more. Her head tilted ever so slightly when he spoke of the great mother. She had never heard of a 'Great Mother' before but it sound interesting and she sounded very important. She would certainly have to ask him about her the next time their paths crossed, because they would, she would make sure of it. For now, however, she was going out to 'extend her blessing', starting with her family.
"Right You." She smiled at him, a little sad that this would be the end of their meeting. She had a new mission to carry out now. She had to share the singing snow with her family and then with the world. "I'll see you again sometime. It's a promise!" She giggled a little then turned to race away kicking the snow out in front of her. "Bye for now!!!" She called over her shoulder before stumbling slightly in the snow.
It took her less then a second to recover and laugh over it. She had been in a great mood when she had first woken up but now she could only describe it as being a terrific mood. She had learned a lot to day and now she had a friend. Not just any friend though, she had a rosy maned soul friend and she couldn't begin to imagine how things could get better.
