“Ah.” Replied Triston hiding the amused grin that threatened to cross his features at Alazne’s reactions to his entrance. His tail swayed lazily behind him and he thought about Alazne’s defensive position that she had immediately taken. It was good to know that she had quick reflexes….His thoughts trailed from fighting as she asked about lifting the water from the wood. A puzzled expression came over his features as he pondered over the question and picked up a piece of the wood.
Maybe he could manipulate water like that…but usually he’d only manipulate it to turn it to ice, that was what made him hesitate. Would he accidentally cause a magical explosion of ice when he tried to lift the water? ‘Only one way to find out…’ But before he could do anything Alazne came back and laid some things out.
Pausing in his inspection of the wood, Triston blinked at Alazne and her findings. “Sure…” The cattaur replied looking steadily at their fire making supplies as he held onto the piece of wood. Using his free hand Triston suddenly poked at the two pieces of stone and a small flicker of knowledge crossed his features, “Flint?” He hopefully asked looking up at Alazne. Surely it was, after all he could remember using flint before when he was making a fire to help out his father.

Alazne responded to the question with an expression that could be a mixture of a sweet smile and an arrogant smirk, before she nodded a couple times, laying down next to the pile of wood, claws scratching into the stone floor beneath their feet as she observed the wood for a moment, before looking at the stones. She sniffed them softly, nodding then to herself. "I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure. After all, why would someone keep random stones in a nest in a tiny cave like this?" she asked, chuckling softly. It wasn't something that was meant to be a condescending question by any means, just a rhetorical joke; after all, it was possible that some bizarre harpy or naga had decided that the shiny stones were appropriate for next-building. That, or any other kind of 'taur who may have been attracted to the shimmering rocks.
She bit her tongue between her teeth, the tip of it poking out from behind her lips -almost as though it was common practice when she was wishing for luck- and she struck the two stones against each other. Nothing. Her ears drooped automatically, but that didn't stop her from trying again. And again. And again. Finally, by her fourth try, impatient and irritated with the stupid little stones, she bashed them against one another with a surprising force, and finally a spark was created, jumping onto the ground before going out. Instantly, her ears perked up and a bright smile crossed her face, her tail wagging to either side happily. So it did work!!
She grinned in Triston's direction. "Now all we need is to see if you can get these dry," she commented with a few nods, leaning down to peer closely at and tap a piece of wood, before raising her upper body back up and smiling at the cattaur a bit- it seemed the teenager was just full of smiles at the moment. The two would only be able to hope that Triston could figure out how to get the water out of the pieces of wood. After all, if he couldn't, then searching for it would have been a bust, as they wouldn't be able to light it until it dried off, by which time the storm may have very well died down.

Realizing that what Alazne had said was most likely a joke, Triston just grinned faintly and pushed back any instant reply that he might have thought of just then. His eyes lit up at the sight of a spark coming from the small stones which were really flint after all and the cattaur felt a lot of secret relief.
But Triston's small burst of happiness was instantly dampened by the reminder of his own task. He nodded and with a serious expression he held onto a piece of the wood and closing his eyes focused intently on the flickering silver-blue magic that was his. Triston's tail twitched as he visualized the wood drying in his mind as droplets of water came from it, but in his hands he could already feel danger. "Alazne!" He called out quickly throwing the piece of wood far from him before moving between it and the wolftaur as it landed and burst into many tiny ice splinters.
Triston hung his head in embarrassment before looking up at Alazne, "I'll try again." He spoke softly before picking up more pieces of wood. After another try or two he finally gained a good result with a piece of wood even after he had frozen it. But though it had turned to ice shortly after he released his magic, Triston ended up forcing the ice to break free leaving the wood completely water and ice free. "Fine with you?" He asked handing over his first successful attempt to Alazne.

Alazne wagged her tail softly as she watched the cattaur attempt to remove the water from the piece of wood. She'd seen his magic before, much more exciting things than this even, but she couldn't help but be entranced by the thought of another 'taur being able to do something so... extraordinary. Sure, there were the naga and everything, but they weren't exactly humane, or apt to sympathy, so she supposed that meant that they didn't really count in this situation. Triston on the other hand, despite having an exterior as cold as the ice he manipulated, was much different than the assumed stereotype of the naga. Besides, the wolftaur definitely preferred other four-leggers to something that could wrap around her a half dozen times and squeeze the life out of her. That was an unpleasant thought.
So lost in her own thoughts, when she heard her name, the wolf was slow to react, glancing up curiously before she realized that the way her name had been said was in a very 'watch out!' fashion. Ears snapping back against her head, she dropped down as low at her upper body would go, arms covering her head and her neck by impulse, eyes snapping shut. The strange sound of shattering confused the girl, before she slowly rose up and let her hands fall, only to find shards of ice and splinters of wood scattered about. Well, that would explain it; Triston had found out how to make a bomb with a wet piece of wood. Which, in fact, was pretty cool.
She nearly jumped at the 'taur's voice, blinking up at him and offering a reassuring smile. "Nah, don't worry about it; it's not your normal kinda magic after all," she said, trying to be as comforting as possible. "'Sides, that in itself was pretty cool. I don't know anybody who can make a shrapnel bomb out of a piece of wet wood," she complimented, a sly grin on her face as she went to investigate the remaining pieces of the log. That comment, in fact, was probably one of the highest honor, given herself and the rest of the wolftaurs' love of the hunt, and a good fight to boot. She was kinda jealous in that respect.
When the piece of wood was handed over, Alazne smiled brightly. "Definitely!" she exclaimed, even if all the excitement had made her forget that she was really all that cold in the first place. She placed the log in the little fit pit in the cave -really only a circle of stones, but still- and piled on a few of the little twigs she'd recovered from the nest. Taking a nice, dry piece of bark, she set it on the ground and set to striking the flint against itself close to the thin piece of wood, trying to get it to light, though unsure of how long that would take.

"Thanks..." Triston replied softly a bit confused over Alazne's reaction, but he was just glad that the end result hadn't hurt either of them. A twitch of a small smile flickered over his face before he went to work on the rest of the damp wood while Alazne started on lighting the fire.
His tail flicked quietly as he focused on controlling his magic and the water. But Triston couldn't help but to peek over at Alazne in between kindling to see how she was doing. Though he was strongly tempted to ask if she needed help, Triston kept quiet and placed faith in her 'sparking ability' with the flint.
As Triston watched Alazne a small spark of amusement came to life at his situation. How many cattaurs and wolftaurs could get along for so long? He wondered silently though to him it wasn't such an amazing thing. He'd been raised by a foxtaur and didn't really see fit to judge others based on their species. Smiling faintly, Triston turned his gaze and went back to drying the wood.

Finally a spark took light and a different kind of fire flashed across Alazne's eyes, a toothy grin crossing her face before it faded to just a smile, one of her fangs poking out of the corner of her lips. She gently took a piece of bark and held it horizontally over the fire between her thumb and forefinger, letting it catch and then waiting until about half of the thing went up in flames before she turned it to the side, gently but quickly slipping it beneath the dried pieces of wood. She did this with the other four pieces she'd salvaged, and soon even the wood that Triston had found was flaming, bringing the bright smile back as she warmed her hands -not that they needed it- flames dancing in her amber eyes.
Already she was tired, as though her earlier, unexpected nap hadn't proven that enough. She glanced to the bed, but gave a soft frown at it, shaking her head. Sure it looked comfortable, but she didn't ever want to get accustomed to sleeping on a cozy bed and, no less, she was more used to sleeping on the ground. It was also closer to the fire, which was a nice touch. People being smart enough to build the nest away from the fire- what a surprise!

Triston watched with a mix of amusement and relief as Alazne finally brought the fire to life. Already he had finished drying out the wood and it was stacked, ready to be added for whenever the fire was low. Another's excitement over having a fire always confused the cattaur and even now, as the fire danced in his deep blue eyes, Triston watched with silent questions. Especially when he noted that Alazne only gave the bed a quick glance, 'Isn't she going to sleep there?'
But that was pushed aside by curiosity. What did it feel like to others when they warmed their hands by the fire? Maybe it was comfortable and suddenly Triston found himself wanting to try it.
So after carefully sliding off a glove from his icy hand, Triston moved and held out his bare skin to the flames. Though he barely felt the heat that emanated from the flames, Triston quickly pulled his hand back and scooted a bit from the fire. It was almost as if he'd been stabbed. His hand hurt from the sudden heat and he quickly placed it on the cool surface of stone to ease the pain.
His blue gaze went to Alazne and the fire before quickly turning away to stare at the floor. 'That...was stupid.' He mentally sighed and his tail flicked in silent agreement.

Alazne was a bit too distracted by the flame to really notice Triston's movements at first. However, the abrupt almost-jump away from the fire caught in her peripheral vision, and her eyes widened slightly, tail dusting the floor a bit, as though trying to tuck itself under her, but being unable to. Her ears flicked back, twitching softly, before she stood and walked toward the cattaur, sniffing at his hand gently before looking up toward him, then down at her own hands. They were far too warm to do any good.
"I'll be right back," she commented, before wiggling back out of the little hole that they'd created, though the ice wall caused her to pause. She stared at it for a moment, before wedging her fingers beneath a small, almost unnoticeable crack beneath it, heaving the wall up. The storm was still in full swing, and made the teenager shiver, pulling her shirt tighter around her lithe form, hair whipping around her face. She was out there, originally, to just get a handful of snow, which she would bring back to Triston to cool off his hands. She grumbled to herself, though there was a definite smile on her face when she made a soft comment about Triston being rather stupid about putting his icey hands anywhere near the fire.
However, her plans were shot down when she spotted a little ball of black no more than twenty feet from their little hideout. She blinked a few times, before folding her arms tightly against her body and starting toward the little thing, whatever it might be. She had a growing suspicion, though, that if it was what she thought, it might not be alive any longer, and if so, it probably wouldn't be without warmth...

Blake They'd taken him from his mother and father. They'd taken him from a place of warmth and love to cold and hatred. They'd taken him from what he liked to a place of fear. The baby wolftaur had been searching for days for his home, but he'd been taken far. Then the storm came. Scared and alone, the babe could only trudge on, fighting the wind. But soon it was too much, and he curled into a tight ball where he stood. So frozen that even his shivering had stopped, he cried himself asleep.

She was practically on top of him by the time she could actually make sense of the little form that lay in the snow, and her heart thrummed loudly in her chest; it was exactly what she thought. Craaap... She knelt down as best she could and lifted the baby 'taur off the ground, the blizzard to strong for her to bother figuring out what kind of species the little one was. She brushed what appeared to be frozen tears from his face and pressed her ears against her hair, growling softly at whoever had allowed this child to wander out in such weather.
Alazne pulled off her overshirt, the chain link on her neck ringing softly as she wrapped the small one in the raggedy fabric and hugged him close to her chest, petting his hair gently, her previous mission completely forgotten as she trekked back to their temporary home-thing, where she made a bee-line for the fire, where she knelt down, sitting with the baby as close to the fire as she could stand, without appearing as though she was trying to cook herself or the baby. She pet his hair softly, eyes widening a bit when she came upon the ears of a wolftaur, a nervous twitch running up her spine. It seemed that she'd completely forgotten about Triston for the time-being...

Ashamed Triston just blankly nodded when Alazne left their shelter. His tail flicked softly before curling around his paws and the cattaur softly sighed as he stared at the taunting flames. He really was different after all, now that he thought more about it. Who else would get hurt from just touching at the warmth cast by the flames which would become a comfort to many?
Maybe Alazne had realized that when she caught him recoiling from the fire? A part of Triston secretly feared that she leaving right now even as he waited for her to return. He shook his head in disbelief over those hidden thoughts and his gaze immediately went back towards the entrance where he could already see Alazne entering. And then there she was, but something was different and Triston's fur sparked. Was that a baby that she was carrying in from the cold outside?
His blue eyes widened in shock and the cattaur watched silently before finally moving over towards Alazne and the other. "How?" He asked looking at the baby. Was it alive after being out in the cold like that? Speaking of cold, Triston's eyes barely detected any signs of heat coming from the babe.
After a small hesitation his ungloved hand moved toward the young wolftaur. A soft glow overcame his features as his hand briefly touched the babe's forehead sending a forced spark of electrical warmth into its body. Triston's concern over the small life was greater than the pain which deflated his magic and body over summoning heat against his usual ice.

Something changed... He couldn't feel so much, but sensed that something was different around him. Suddenly, warmth spread through him. With eyes frozen shut and limbs stiff cold, a cracked mewl slipped through his lips, wanting more of the warmth.

At soon as she heard the cattaur's question, the fur on Alazne's tail spiked in surprise, ears tipping toward the male as she glanced up at him with a weak smile, before she shook her head softly. "I have no idea..." she mumbled, petting the child's hair before realizing that her hands had grown cold from her excursion, as had the rest of her body; she only noticed this when the warmth finally touched her freezing, snowmelt-covered skin and she shivered softly, breathing gently onto one hand, the one that wasn't steadying the babe in her arms.
"We're lucky that I went out there when I did," she murmured, warming her hand as much as she could before running it through the baby's hair gently, getting the snow out of it as best she could, the lack of magic of her own bothering her greatly. She shoved the hair away from her eyes when her fringe fell once again, cursing gravity under her breath softly. A medic would be the real miracle now, though Triston was the best that they had, which wasn't a negative thing in the least.
Alazne's ears tipped back in concern when the cattaur placed his hand on the child's forehead, large amber eyes looking up toward the other nervously. She didn't want him to hurt himself, but the mewl from the small wolf made her heart flutter with hope. Though the child may be sick and freezing, he was still alive, which was more than one could have hoped for, finding him in such weather.

"He definitely is." Replied Triston moving a strand of hair from his eyes. The cattaur looked about and sighed in a small defeat as he realized that none of the herbs which he could think of for helping the small tyke was anywhere near them with winter.
His gaze moved from her amber one to look to the corner of the shelter where parts of blankets still lingered. Maybe those would help as well..."Alazne...hug onto him tightly to keep him warm." Triston finally stated before sliding off his other glove. Though his insides swirled in a grimace at what he was going to do, Triston gave Alazne a smile. "No worries."
The remnants of his energy swirled into the cattaur's finger tips as a warmth before he rubbed the babe's cold limbs taking the cold into himself as he forced all the small magical warmth that he could summon into the babe. "There..." With that he closed his eyes and scooted back to lay down for a bit.

The babe twitched his ears, more warmth flowing through his small body. He mewled again, his dry tongue now able to slip out and lick at his nose. He was thirsty. Really thirsty. Starving. He whined a little as life re-entered his body.
