Shadow huffed, not liking the fact that Kane was calling him a liar (even if it was true. Nani might hear, after all.) but did nothing about it, feeling pleased and puffing his chest proudly when Kane said he noticed Nani had more affections for himself. He made no comment to the other male, unsure on what to say, and only rested his head on his paws, leaning closer to Nani. The day had been long and hard for his small pup body, and it wasn't long until he was snoring along beside her.

Kane watched them for a moment. It was time, this was perfect. Standing silently he used all the tricks his parents ever taught him about moving while being absolutely quiet. It had been a good lesson that had saved his life a couple times before. Now he used it to get away.
Stepping in any available empty space of the den he set his paws carefully, trying to make sure the other pups never awoke. He stepped over them and slipped out of the den. Hesitating he looked back into the hole. Kane hoped they would stay in there, hoped for their safety. He also hoped they would have good lives, and that he'd meet them again someday. He never said anything out loud though. He was taught to hide emotion.
Which is why he never said goodbye. Farewells were too emotional, especially when you were likely to cross trails and see each other once more. Kane listened to their breathing, making sure they were truly asleep. Turning away, he walked off into the winter storm. Cold snow hid his pelt except for the red markings. The falling white snowflakes fell, soon hiding even those until it looked like he disappeared. His paw prints were covered as well. He wasn't afraid, he was a creature of the tundra. Born and raised here. He would survive.
