Terrie nearly jumped at Emris' excited words. She smiled softly, her tail twitching a couple times. When he went to get the tea, she tried to think of what she could tell him. She didn't want to sound like a drama queen, but her life wasn't a fairy tale either... "Thanks." Terrie held the cup carefully in both hands, enjoying the scent and warmth of the hot drink, letting it relax her. "Um. Is there something inparticular you'd like to know? Or am I just talking."

After finally taking a small sip of the sweet tasting tea, Emris blinked at Terrie. He wasn't really sure that he had anything specific that he wanted to know about her...he was eager to hear anything she wanted to tell him. 'Good or bad...' He thought, his eyes flickering once more from light to dark and then back.
"Hmm...I guess you're just talking." Emris finally replied with a grin, "Anything you want to tell me. I'll listen to it."

Terrie smirked and her face went back to her lap. "I guess logic says start at the biginning then. Well, as beginning as I can get." She took a slow sip of the tea, thinking back to what she hadn't conciously thought of in a long time. "My earliest memories are as a teen. I was found on a beach, washed up with the tide. That's where the old man found me. He took me into his home and took care of me. He wasn't sure what to do with me, but since I didn't know anything about myself either, he did what he could." She paused, taking another sip. "But he was old, not doing well himself. Couldn't get arouns easily, so he put me in the bedroom next to his. It was a giant house with so many rooms, but he was kind enough to place me so close to him. ...He passed soon after I was back on my feet. When he died, he entrusted me to his son." Her voice deepened slightly, an old anger rising up. "He was nothing like his father. He saw me as a tool. An object. He tried to give me away to more men. I think he called it a circus, or zoo, or something." She shook her head. "He had promised his father he'd take care of me. Liar." She blinked rapidly, embarassed that she was letting her past bother her again. "Anyway. I managed to get away from there alright." She took another sip, wondering what to say next without setting herself off again, and still a little suprised that she had told what she had. She flashed a quick peek at Emris, wondering what he thought of her start. Hoping she hadn't really embarassed herself.

Emris watched and listened to Terrie intently, the only movement of his being the occasional sip of tea. ‘A forgotten past?’ Interest flared at that, but he wouldn’t push her for it. Even he understood that sometimes it was best to keep the past forgotten. It was enough that she was lucky to even survive to be washed up in the tide. It was said that the ocean wasn’t so kind with unfortunates, taurs and humans both.
Letting out a small sigh after hearing about the son, Emris shook his head woefully. “Blood isn’t always the same after all…what a horrible son.” He reached over and gently squeezed Terrie's shoulder as a small sign of comfort. “I’m glad that you managed to get away….” He smiled warmly and after pulling back clasped his hands together. “So…did you come here directly from that, or have you traveled any since then?” He decided it'd probably be best to move on from such a horrible memory...'That is unless she really needs to talk about it.' Even so the concerned foxtaur would never push any one about something.

Terrie's shadowed eyes blinked at the shoulder squeeze. Was that... support? She smiled at that, and his words. 'I'm glad too.' She thought to herself. Taking another sip of tea, she continued. "I traveled. I'm not entirely sure where. I just wanted to get as far from the son as possible. I learned quickly to avoid busy cities, going in them only for food or shelter when the weather got bad. Cramped spaces, no place to breath. And everyone... stares. Everyone has a slightly different reaction, but as a whole it means the same thing. The same thing the old man's son felt." She looked away slightly, taking a couple breaths. "At one point I almost started believing some of the names I was called... I'll just say they weren't names you'd want to be a model for. Besides, I didn't know what I was at the time. I thought..." She stopped short and waved her hand irritably/dismissivly in the air. "But after hiding out for a while, like in the woods, just anywhere away from humans, their words seemed to lose their affects on me. Being on my own helped me find things about myself to like. There wasn't much at the time, but it kept me going."

"That's good..." Emris' eyes softened, "I know that it's something I've learned myself...that what others call you doesn't make you that." Still, his hands clenched tighter together as he thought about the ones who called her awful names and treated her horribly. How could they do that to her? To anyone...the cruel things that he heard about others doing around the isles and world just didn't seem right. None of it was.
But the grip loosened as Emris smiled. "Hey...on the bright side, Terrie...you're going to live here now. And I'm sure everyone around here will love you and all will help you get used to this area." He grinned and his eyes brightened, "I'm sure of it." The foxtaur still itched to hug Terrie in an attempt to comfort her about her past...but he still decided against it. 'I'll stick to words for now...' After all Emris just couldn't see himself being that bold.

Terrie listened silently, eyes on the cup in her hands. After using a finger to quickly brush at her eyes, she looked over at Emris, eyes wary, but hopeful. A corner of her mouth rose ever so slightly in responce to his assurances. He seemed so sure... it was almost hard to disbelieve him. She turned her eyes back to the cup and her almost-smile slid away again. "After hiding away, and learning to appreciate myself a little more, I realized I needed to get further away. Just, away from people. So, I made a small boat and tried to cross the salty waters. I didn't know what was on the other side, but it could have been better than that." Her face lifted to look out a window to the yard, the darkness around her face from telling her story easing away a bit as she continued. "While out there, a storm came along. All I could do was hold onto the boat, hope it stayed floating. Eventually, the boat ran into an island. This one. The boat was ruined, so I was stuck. I ran into the woods for cover ....Good thing." She snorted slightly. "Water took me to the nicest human ever, and then it brought me here. Before I met you, while still exploring here, I would think that I was supposed to have been born with fins instead of legs." She ran a finger around the rim off her cup, thinking of her next words. "But the world is strange, and if I hadn't had legs, I probably wouldn't have met you." She frowned at the depressing thought, then shook her head. "And that's the short version of my life so far. You know the rest of it." She gulped down the rest of the tea, suddenly feeling.... what? Relief? Bashfulness? Irritation? Maybe all that? Maybe more? She couldn't put her finger on it, but it made her jittery.

Emris took another sip of tea, his eyes never leaving Terrie. "Ah, the world is pretty strange." He sighed, yet grinned. "But I like it this way...and I hope that water will behave and not take you anywhere again..." He trailed off but reluctantly finally added the sad thought, " ..unless you'd want to leave this area." His eyes twinkled as he tried to ease Terrie's thoughts with some random talk, "I have a cousin who had been carried also by the waves when just a young child. It took him to the island of cattaurs and has been carrying him all over now. Such a traveling warrior is he."
Emris grew silent but was feeling somewhat odd in the silence so he gave talking another go. "I used to be somewhat like him, but that was a time ago. Now I just stay around here and take care of my cousin's daughter when she doesn't feel like going with him or just likes to visit me. In the meantime you could find me in my library reading or something." He gave a small chuckle, "I guess I'm not such an amazing adventurer as most of everyone else around here is."

'Want to leave?' Terrie repeated to herself, puzzled. The thought of leaving here made her deeply sad. What puzzled her was how great her sadness was at the thought. She hadn't been here that long, so why the emotion? She smiled softly to herself as realization quickly hit. It was the foxtaur next to her. Her first friend. She listened to Emris talk as she let her thoughts warm her inside, the affects of the story on herself fading. "Your cousin and his daughter..." She said slowly, then finally tearing her eyes from the cup to look at Emris, startled by his gaze on her even though her's had been elsewhere. "Do you have a large family? You've talked of others earlier." She smiled at his small laugh. "I know many humans who would be jealous of your lack of adventure. It's not such a bad thing to have a place to want to stay."

Emris found himself nodding in agreement with Terrie's words. "Yes, I've had enough adventure for a bit. This is a very fine setting for me to stay in." Then he paused to sip his tea, already the cup was over half empty. "A large family? Not...really. Xennek and Yuna are the only two that I really call my family. But I do know several others around here that could be as close as family about."
He chuckled, "Some extended families around this meadow seem to be huge when I think about it. Especially with centaurs and cattaurs it seems...not counting any wolftaur packs as well. "

Terrie smiled. "And I've had enough wild adventure myself. I want to have a home. A place to stay. Luckily, I do believe I've found a rather nice spot." She tilted her head slightly in thought. "I wonder what it's like; living in a large family. Even if it's just what you called extended family, a large one seems like it'd be hectic. I once saw a family with four mothers, two fathers and at least thirty children. All the babes were rather young. They had a sign up front saying that the kids were for sale. Can you imagine having so many kids that you had to start selling them?!"
((She's talking about a small orphanage >_< ))

((Ah okay. ^^))
Emris raised his eyebrow at Terrie but didn't say a word as she spoke. "That's ...weird." He had a feeling of this 'family' she was talking about but didn't want to say anything about his guess.
Then he laughed, "Not that I can even imagine myself having children." His eyes sparkled at the thought. Out of his family, he just would never see himself as a father. Then again...he used to never be able to imagine his rambunctious cousin as one either.

Terrie shook her head. "Actually, I've never really thought about it. I mean, it would come up as a passing thought when I'd see humans with children, but I never had the time to just sit and think of it." She paused, taking a moment to give the subject a short thought. "Maybe I'd like them someday. I'd want to make sure I've got everything ready for them first though. My home built, friends around me, enough belongings to share and skills to teach them, and especially a mate. I've seen women alone with children, and it just seems hard." She frowned slightly. "I wonder how many of those children ever see their fathers. That's something else. I wouldn't want to mate just for kids. He'd have to be there with us." She tilted her head and turned to Emris. "Does that sound selfish of me? Wanting him to be around?"

Listening to Terrie made the corner of Emris’s mouth want to turn up in a small smile. Still the foxtaur tried to keep his face straight as she talked, but it really was good to know that she thought far ahead concerning these things. Just hearing her made him think to the talks he used to have with Xennek when they were younger and were attempting to think of the future. Not that he did much of that back then, the two of them had just lived day by day.
“No, that doesn’t sound selfish at all.” Emris replied finally allowing the smile to show. “I mean, if I had a mate I would make sure to stick with her and any children that we had. I’d want to take care of them, especially since I want to mate for love…and I wouldn’t want to leave any loved ones out by themselves. I just don’t see how some fathers can…” He trailed off trying to find the right words before continuing softly, “Just come and go and finally are never seen again.” His eyes changed from that bright spark to a deeper more serious tint and for one second he accidentally allowed just a slip of the sorrow he had seen show on his face.

Terrie smiled appreciativly. "That's good. And whoever gets you will be very lucky..." She paused and repressed an awkward giggle that fought for a place in her throat. But the thing that really sent it back was the look that suddenly crossed Emris' eyes. Her hand slowly reached along the table's edge, hesitated, then covered the final distance to rest gently on the male's hand. "I noticed I've been talking a lot," A fact that greatly suprised her, "but I'm just as good at listening I think." She tilted her head slightly, and went silent. She generally didn't like showing her emotions, and she didn't know if Emris possibly felt the same. She'd just let him take it as he saw fit. Though... she really did want to know what had caused that look that had made her heart startle in concern.
