The shout caught Julien's attention and his head jerked up, the connection broken. Instead of dissipating, the magic slammed back into him with hard force, pushing his breath from him hard enough that he lifted a hand to his chest, eyes widening. "What... I don't understand," he whispered, half-breathless as he tried to figure out what had gone wrong.

“You’re stupid!” Toulouse all but cried. “Stupid, stupid, stupid! You’re powerful but you lack method! You need to focus, know what you want, then go for it. What you just did is take a wrecking ball to a house of sticks!” Toulouse leaned back almost as much out of breath as Julien. He had felt that magic take just as Julien had pulled back. The magic left like a powerful whirlpool. He could only imagine what if must've felt like to Julien
Toulouse reach up to Julien’s forehead, smoothing back his hair worriedly. “Are you alright?” He asked gently searching Julien wided-eyed face. “You don’t feel dizzy do you? Hurt anywhere? I can only guide you Jules. Please be careful.”

"Okay the yelling?" Julien said, still trying to catch his breath but feeling it slowly calm. It was rather like having the wind knocked from him, now that he was able to think about it more coherently, really... "Needs to stop." He tried for gentle humor, but the words came out slightly hurt all the same, and he shook his head, looking away from Toulouse's touch as he lifted a hand to his head. He paused his hand partway up, though, staring at it curiously for a moment as he realized he was shaking.
"Huh. Why was it fighting me? When I healed the cut, it came together easily... as easy as pressing skin together and applying a bandage, really. But the bone..."

“I’m am allowed to yell when you scare the hell out of me. Okay? Jeez louis, you almost gave me a heart attack. If I had known you were going to do that, I would've gone outside.” Toulouse huffed out angry and scared. He wasn’t a healer and was still unsure if healing had the same properties as charming and cursing. It was magic so wasn’t it the same? He couldn’t remember.
“Listen.” Toulouse said trying to control his temper. “Just listen okay? You’re doing something unnatural in trying to speed up the natural healing process of anything. Skin is easier than bone, simple as that. Bone is a tough element as it takes a long time to wear it down, and even after it’s worn down is becomes part of the earth, another tough element. You can’t force things like this. Visualize what you want, then go for. Do shove the power in, let it flow gently like a quiet pool in spring. You don’t need an army to capture an ant hill, you see?”

"Are you okay?" Julien asked, moving to catch Toulouse's face in his hands to feel for fever, or any other sign that his magic might've thrown Toulouse's system out of whack. "Did I hurt you?" Pale, worried eyes searched Toulouse's, and Julien sank back after a moment, dropping to lay on the ground, his legs still crossed together and holding Love.
"What am I supposed to do about bone, then? Ignore it? You say I can't force it, but I didn't feel any give... I didn't feel like I had much choice in the matter, Toulouse. It wasn't responding at all."

“Be still. I’m fine Julien, don’t worry. It was just a shock is all. It would take more than that to render me thus.” Toulouse watched as Love crawled up on Julien’s chest and sit.
“Did I say that? I said that it was a tough element, not an impossible one. You always have a choice. Light or dark. Good or evil. Blood or Bone. There is always a choice to be made. It may be hard to see, but it’s there. You don’t have to feel it give, you have to feel it accept. A substance won’t accept if you use force. Look at this.” Toulouse picked up the green leather book where it had flipped shut. He moved it so it sent near the chair. Toulouse walked back and set next to Julien.
“I want that book, but it is separated from me by Air and Gravity. Gravity doesn’t like to be bent, nor Air controlled. You must be gentle like a lover. With the right amount of coaxing, soul’s take flight.” Toulouse’s voice had dropped to a whisper as his power rose. He flexed his aura putting theory into practice. His magic danced with Air and flirted with Gravity until the book rose slowly from the floor and floated gently to Toulouse’s outstretched hand. “Do you see?”

Julien watched, brow furrowed as he sought to take it all in. "Then by trying to force it the way I was... I was doing harm," he finally decided, looking down at Love with pained eyes. "I think I understand... But I'm not sure I know how." The last words were whispered, uncertain and unlike Julien. "The way the magic felt... the way it slammed into me... It scared me, Toulouse," he admitted softly, not looking at the boy. "I... well, I wasn't prepared, but obviously my body can handle magic. What if I'd slammed it into Love's that way? What would've happened to her? Would she even still be alive?"

“Don’t be frightened Julien. Just learn from your mistakes. The reason your magic came back to you so forcefully was because you were giving it forcefully. I don’t want to say you were doing harm…more like going against nature…which I guess is harm in a way.” Toulouse gripped Julien’s arm, trying to offer him strength. He never knew what words of comfort to say like Julien did.
“You’re young yet and your magic is new to you. You can’t expect to walk before you can crawl. Why don’t we try something a little easier than Bone? Love’s in no danger. What do you say?” He wanted to give Julien more confidence in his magic. Maybe if he was able to really fix something, like Love’s cut, then he’d be less afraid of it.

Julien looked up at Toulouse solemnly, brows knitting together. The worry didn't fade from his expression, but he nodded slowly, accepting the comfort, at the very least. "What else would we try? Have you been collecting wounded cats or something?" he asked wryly, trying for a smile. The look fell flat. He'd failed Love, at least for now, and he didn't know how to fix it, or whether he'd done more harm.

“Noooooope.” Toulouse said in a sing-song voice. “And don’t worry about that cat Her tail can wait. It’ll teach her not to play with mouse traps.” Toulouse flicked his blond hair over his shoulder and glanced at Julien with an amused glint in his eyes. He wondered if Julien would flip out or not. Still, Toulouse sauntered over to the little end table next to the chair. On it was a scatter of half opened envelopes with an intricate sliver envelope opener sitting on top. Toulouse picked up the sharp envelope opener.
“Come over here Julien.” Toulouse held the envelope opener to his thumb. “Now, I want you to really concentrate on not spiling your aura all over the place this time. It worked with Love’s foot but is not generally the way to go. Us as little energy to heal as much as possible. Okay? There.” Toulouse had just run the sliver opener down the length of the inside of his thumb it wasn’t deep and would heal on it’s own on the half hour. Toulouse wanted to see what Julien would do.
“Here, try now.” Toulouse held his bleeding thumb to Julien.[/szie]

Julien stared at the thumb for a moment, then reached for Toulouse's wrist, catching it and tugging him away from the opener before he began to heal. "You don't get to do this," he said, his voice tight as he reached out, feeling the skin and pushing it together with his mind, knitting it into place. This, he was confident in. This, he'd already seen himself do. "Not on purpose."
His everpresent smile was gone, eyes a mixture of pain and anger, but his hands were infinitely gentle as he continued to hold Toulouse's wrist, his other hand lifting so a finger ran down the thumb where the cut should be, testing the healing to ensure there wasn't a ragged edge, or a way for it to easily reopen.

Toulouse closed his eyes, hearing Julien’s anger but not minding. Instead, he let Julien’s power wash over him, filling him, closing the wound. This Julien was confident in and he need to be confident in everything. “There is a purpose Julien. Everything has a purpose.” Toulouse felt Julien’s healing magic stitch close the wound. He felt that Julien was in control. There was no fear here, only anger.
“You need to do the exact thing you did here with Love’s tail. Forget the elements for a moment and just let your magic be. It’s of nature so nature will, in the end, accept it. If you say you already know how to do this, then you also know the other.” Toulouse was trying to make things easier for Julien to understand. He was very natural at what he did and Toulouse thought that the elements might have confused him. Oh, you needed to work with them to be successful, but Julien seemed a bit different in the way he working. Was it because of the healing?
“Please, don’t be angry with me Julien. I’m sorry.” Toulouse said in a sincerest of apologies. He usually didn’t mean things like this but this time he did. Toulouse opened his vibrant blue eyes and stared into Julien’s. “I’m not a healer and I’m trying to understand healing. I’m trying to help you in the best way that I know how. Do you understand?”

Julien hesitated for a long moment, keeping hold of Toulouse's wrist before sighing and sitting down, finally letting go. "I see what you're saying," he said slowly, searching Toulouse's face. "But you can't teach me by hurting yourself, Toulouse. It's not fair to either of us, don't you see?" He folded his hands in his lap and bowed his head. "I don't want to see you do that again, is that clear? I'll heal you no matter what, but I don't want to see you hurt yourself again, even just a little."

“Your such a goose. I won’t do it again. I only needed it done once anyways. Just to see.” Toulouse licked the phantom injury on his thumb thoughtfully. “Honestly, that didn’t hurt at all. It’s all been kind of messed up since-” Toulouse suddenly realized he was being indiscreet and shook his head. Julien did not need to know about that little bit of histrionics.
“Anyhow, point made. Would you like to try Love again or take a break? I’m kind of hungry myself.” Toulouse said, stretching as if he’d been the one doing all the magic. He was of the opinion that Julien needed to step away from the problem but wasn’t going to say anything if the boy wanted to keep trying.

"Since when?" Julien countered, his eyes sharpening as he looked at Toulouse. "Did someone hurt you?" Apparently, Toulouse's action had brought out his overprotective side, for he checked the thumb over again carefully, worry in his eyes.
"I'll make lunch for us after I give Love another try... and after you tell me what happened that your thumb wasn't okay," he added pointedly.
