I've decided I'll pass on this. Perhaps when I go home for a vacation, I'll rent it...if the only place I know that rents out games actually has it. When it all burns down to it...racing games just drive me absolutely NUTS. sweatdrop But I do want to be clued in on the story, though. Spoilers, please?

Spoilers in white, then.
The story isn't very consequential, since this is just a side game. Basically, at the start of the Story Mode, Sonic and company try to stop the Babylon Rogues, a group of thieves, from stealing a Chaos Emerald. The Babylon Rogue members are Jet the Hawk (leader with his position going to his head, cocky, has a really annoying voice), Wave the Swallow (knows much more about Extreme Gear (airboard) technology than Tails or Eggman, boastful, probably would be a better leader than Jet), and Storm the Albatross (thug, errand runner, comic relief). Sonic tries to stop them by riding on the airboard Storm dropped while trying to get away, but gets his a** kicked by Jet, since Jet is more experienced on a board. Then they find out that Eggman is holding an airboard championship race, with an entry fee of one Chaos Emerald. So they do the whole race thing, but in the final track which takes place in the desert, Sonic's board explodes and Jet wins the competition. Sonic was about to win, but the BRs sabotaged his board before the race.
So Jet approaches the Chaos Emeralds and holds up this little shiny cube thing. The Chaos Emeralds activate the cube, which shoots a laser into the desert, and all of a sudden a floating city emerges from the sands. This is Babylon Garden, a relic of the civilization that the BRs are desendents of. Then Eggman nicks the glowy cube, cackling about getting the Babylonian's secret ancient treasure. It turns out Eggman had double-crossed the BRs; he was the one who told them about the connection between the glowy cube and raising Babylon Garden, to get them to collect the Emeralds for him and raise the Garden for him. Supposedly the Babylonians gave someone a gift that allowed them to rule the world, so Eggman wants to see what kind of stuff they would keep for themselves, perhaps awesome technology or the like.
So Sonic and company and Jet and company pursue Eggman. They defeat Eggman's racing robots, and Sonic retrieves the glowy cube and gives it back to Jet, who is all "WTF". But Wave says they should just go and get the treasure since Sonic and company don't want it. So they open up a door using the glowy cube, but then they all get sucked into a "Digital Dimension", and Sonic and company come to their aid.
In the Digital Dimension, they defeat the Babylon Guardian, who is a huge-a** genie, or something. So when they win the fight/race, a treasure chest appears. They open it and are all surprised at what they see, but then Eggman shows up with his Egg Blasters and is all "Treasure's mine, hand it over." So they hand it over: it's a flying carpet. Eggman jizzes over how nice the carpet looks and how well-made it is, but then realizes it's not the spectacular world-conquering technology he was looking for. This seems to shock him so much that he passes out.
So back in the desert, Sonic and company bid farewell to the BRs. Jet is all "Better keep practicing because I'm going to beat you fair next time" and Sonic's all "mmkay". So the BRs leave, supposedly to get more treasure, and the crappy Sonic Riders theme plays.
So, nothing special. It gives a premise, at least. xp

I'm actually interested by this game. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment for buying Shadow, but I bought that mainly to learn the plot; the gameplay was a mediochre bonus.
As for Riders, I'm buying it because it's another Sonic racing game (Sonic R was brilliant, albeit short) and that it's a simple-to-use, multiplayer racing game on the GC that isn't Double Dash (my friend already has that, so I don't really need to bother getting myself a copy). The fact that it's a Sonic game is what really sells it for me, I guess. The only Sonic game I've not bought for the GC was Mega Collection (Well, I didn't buy SA2B either; it was given as an X-mas prezzie =P).

I was given a hundred dollars for my b-day last weekend and bought the sonic gems, sonic mega collection plus, sonic adventure 2 battle, and sonic riders. I am yet to try sonic riders, I hope it is fun.

Im interested in Sonic Riders, if I saw it pre-owned for cheap.
Im not going to go spending 35 pounds on a game which I may or may not like.

Early reviews indicate the game is mostly average with one or two good ideas. See me stupefied with abject shock.

Ah yes Sonic Riders, the game I heard about over the summer, got last Sunday, and currently am unlocking everything in now. Pure Genius in every way, it's so beautiful it makes me wanna cry.

I'll be getting it later on in the year. I like the racing games and it should provide a new challenge when my old uni friends come round - at least one of them must be getting tired of me wiping the floor with her in Sonic 2 smile
Not sure I really need a whole plethora of new characters, but we'll see...

well it's only 3 new characters, 5 if you count the dumb robots, and all the characters are decently designed.

The only new character I ended up liking was Wave. Take Rouge, subtract the perceived sluttiness, and add leadership skills and technological know-how, and you get her. She's also pretty snarky sometimes and I like that.
Storm was amusing, but ultimately doesn't bring much to the table.
And Jet... he's just annoying.
I'm displeased with the two robots as well. I would have much rather have them be another Sonic character or another Sega character cameo. They just feel so pointless, and they aren't appealing at all.
Though I guess I like that they sound like Mr. Schmee... xp

As I thought this game was much better than Sonic R. Albeit, mainly in terms of graphics. XD But in variety and replay value as well.

I quite liked Sonic R, so I may give it a look. Since trying to find anywhere that rents games - let alone GC titles - around here is a waste of time, I may either try to find another GC owner or watch reviews carefully and wait for the price to drop.

It doesn;t have Sonic R's track design, but there are moments...

Okay, I've decided, and I will now state it here. I have play Super Smash Bros. Melee for 400 hours, enjoying each hour, and have gotten everything. I have played Sonic Riders for over 50 hours, and, at this point, I feel, I love Sonic Riders, more then I love Super Smash Bros. Melee. Behold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
