" 'za salmon, of course it looks like that, 200 miles up stream and I'd be pished too" he said to the dark haired girl, Anna? something... the laughter died down to giggles and occasional mutters of "bird fish" as he took the knife and turned it the right way around to slice into the gills of the fish and then inexpertly filleting first one side then the other and then doing the same to the other fish.
with the mottled grey skin on the other side the flesh looked nice as anything Zak took the heads, bones spare bits of meat and guts and flung them back into the river rinsing the blood from his hands afterwards.

He put the onion still raw on the middle broke it into bits and spread them on a pan with more raw-er onion then put one of the fish skin side down on this and put that on the fire.

the other he took and handed to brown-girl in two limpish slippery peices, a salmon being as long as his forearm should be enough for three with potential leftovers "if you take these and hang them on the back of your wagon it'll dry in the sun and turn into jerky"* he said
"fresh is better but we have enough"

*(pioneer fact, this is indeed how you make dried fish if you live in a wagon)

Tamlin had just finished tidying up the inside of Baptist's wagon (how he could mess it up in so little time was beyond her) she hmphed to her self. Standing on the steps she looked in. "yep, looks good again. I wonder if I should do laundry today, the sun is out and all." tamlin started gathering up her dirty clothes "hmm i wonder, should I do his as well." she thought a moment and decided she should ask Baptiste what he wanted washed.

"hmm, i wonder where he got himself to, I haven't seen him around the wagon today." (he always hides when i start cleaning... scared i might make him help clean his own wagon) she mused as she wandered off to find him.

heading out of the circle of wagons she spotted a small gaggle of the fortunette children surrounding the new burly guy...Zak, she took a moment to remember his name. She made towards them, perhaps they had seen her wayward friend.

"Hello Zak, Ro" Tamlin simply smiled and nodded her greeting to the others as she had never met them before and remembering all these names was quite the trick. "Looks like you all have cooked up and excellent fish here. Sorry for my interruption, but have any of you seen Baptiste? I was hoping to do laundry while the weather is cooperating so nicely but I need his stuff."

She looked over Zak again, still looking a bit worse for wear "umm, perhaps you might like me to launder your clothes as well?" she blushed briefly, she hadn't meant it to sound that bad "I mean, the fish smell, its wonderful for eating, but perhaps Ki might not like it in the wagon." She looked a little frantically at Ro, oddly she hoped the child approved of her offer, she had meant it in the best intentions.

Ro nods emphatically at the red-haired gypsy. It's a reasonable offer indeed.

Baptiste had gone riding. Jolie likes to canter about sometimes, but can't be trusted to let out on her own.

"I think I know what I'm doing" said Zak, casually flipping the fish then wildly flailed the hot grease off his fingers and stuck his hand in his mouth.

Zak watched the fire and poked at the fish bits for a while before deciding they were done. when they were close he wrapped his hand in the dirty bandage and quickly took the pan off the fire setting it on a rock.

"don't have plates or anything fancy but it should be done by now" he reached in and took a piece of fish and some of the caramelized/scorched onions and quickly flung it into his mouth. Zak chewed with a lot of air to try and cool it and then fished about in his cheek to retrieve a long curved fish bone before swallowing.

Zak flicked the bone into the fire and wiped his hands on his trouser legs and prepared to go in for another piece "Oh it's terrible, suppose I'll have to have all of it and spare you girls" he said with a suppressed grin.
