PiercedPixie2 OregonLoveShaman Ah, I'm new, but I'm seeing a really vibrant energy here already... I'm a vegan conscious camper who gets about without a car, so my ecological and carbon footprints are about 90% less than the average American's (about 13% reduced by getting about without a car, about 18% reduced by being vegan, and about 60% reduced by having a sleeping spot in a tent located in a woodlands above town). I'm an activist/networker/paradigm shifter. Also Pagan Taoist and mathematician.... Welcome! I noticed how low your footprint was when i accepted you - impressive! Its cool you're a mathematician, i made C's and D's in math sweatdrop Thank you for the compliment and for accepting me. Should you ever find yourself needing to study math, I tutor....

pirhan How's that? I could never camp for extended periods. I love my hot showers too much! And welcome to all the new members! :3We did have a facility for conscious campers and homeless to get showers, but now I have to rely on my solar water heater and a dish tub.... You'll have to see my set up if you're ever by this way. I'm on a hillside, up against a madrone. I found an old iron railing that leans against the tree, and I've built up the spot with abandoned pillows and cushions, then putting my tent on that. There's a tarp over the tent to further minimize the chance of leaks, also giving me a porch area to slap off any wet things before I do into the tent. It's just a sleeping spot, most of my day is in town, and in going up there, I always get quite warmed up, even on the coldest days in the winter, so I just slip into the bed while still warm. Lately, though, I just lay naked on top of everything and enjoy the cooling breezes coming through....

I'm curious how that works without you getting into any sort of trouble from the law enforcement. I'd like to see pictures of your campsite if possible. What size tarp do you use? Is it minimalist 8x10 or more spacious like a 12x12 blue tarp or the likes. You intrigue me mr. Shaman

Hello Everyone, My name is Lilly. I am married with 3 kids and 1 granddaughter. My favorite colors are purple and green. I love tattoos and Jesus. I adore animals, especially cats of which I have 9. Since I am married and have kids still at home I don't consider myself the "crazy cat lady" yet. blaugh Plus, we have a very large dog, 2 rabbits, 2 gerbils, 2 snakes and 3 betta fish (not all in the same tank mind you 4laugh ). I am Gaia friends with PiercedPixie2 and that is how I found out about this guild. My family and I try to be as Eco friendly as possible and I thought this would be another great way to find ideas and share them in helping to preserve our planet and help ourselves. We have started my granddaughter off completely organic as far as her baby food is concerned and plan on staying that way for as much as possible. I look forward to making new friends here. biggrin

Shaman At present, I'm in a spot where I'm not sure of the land's ownership, but I've been there for nearly 3 years without a problem. The Ashland Conscious Camper Community is trying to get a piece of land from the city for legal camping, which we would run modeling it somewhat after Dignity Village in Portland. I'm a bit off the beaten path, I don't have a fire ring, and I don't smoke, so I've minimized the odds that someone will turn me in. I use free papers to line the inside of my tent to absorb what little moisture gets inside, then when it's damp, it goes just outside the door of my tent making a matting which decreases the chances of tracking in dirt, but also control erosion. My tent is 7'x7', the tarp has to be large enough to extend 1.5 feet or more beyond the footprint of the tent in every direction to allow venting of the tent while decreasing the odds rain will blow into one of the netted windows. In my experience, the tent, sleeping bag, tarp and windup alarm clock (doubles as a bear warder) cost about $80 every 4 years to maintain or replace.

For some reason I thought you were just tarping. But a tent and a tarp makes more sense for the long haul. I've read about a community of yurts somewhere in the upper middle states. They are more permanent dwellings but still easily dismantled to be moved around.
Now I'm going to have to read more about conscious campers. 3nodding

Hey everyone, My name is Chelsea and I'm from California. Im currently at a junior college and plan to transfer to UC Davis or UC Santa Barbara to get my degree. I'm majoring in biology, more specifically zoology and plan to minor in art. I absolutely love the environment and do see the pressing requirement that we all live greener lives. Over the years Ive tried to do things in my own life as well as spread the word about environmental issues, ie: global warming, and plan to keep doing so. I even had a job as a canvasser for Environment California, but it proved to be a bit much for me and too long of a commute to get to work everyday. sad Canvassing is hard! Nonetheless, I still plan on spreading the word my own way.

You would have more luck googling about "hut living" and "eco villages."

Hi, I'm Yummy Ukulele. I won't tell you my real name, but my alias IS Ivy Eleanor Emerson. I have lived seventeen years and approximately three months to date.
I play ukulele, guitar, and mandolin as well as sing. The music that I most enjoy would fit under the categories of folk (and its sub-genres), "old-timey" (about 40s and earlier), and world (mainly gypsy, Mediterranean, Indian, and European). Other specifications of music interest include independent film soundtracks, violin, music consisting of political messages, and comical acts. My favorite band is The Beatles, but I also hold Beirut, DeVotchKa, and Cold War Kids dear, to name a few. Please visit the French site, La Blogotheque, for its featured artists to better understand the genres and its artists that I'm interested in.
As far as my religious beliefs, I'm an atheist because I don't believe in a higher being. As far as which church I attend, I go to a Unitarian Universalist church. As far as which religion I most closely identify with, I agree most with Humanitarianism.
When I am watching television, I mostly watch South Park, The Daily Show, Colbert Report, Reno 911!, MXC, Wild Boyz, I Love the [60s, 70s, 80s, 90s], Scrubs, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Lil' Bush, The Price is Right, Wonder Showzen, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Pop Up Video, music videos, Kid Nation, Survivorman, Ghost Hunters, and Paranormal State. I jealously wish I had the National Geographic and Sundance channels.
Cinematic interests include horror, comedy, black and white silent films, old movies, independent movies, movies directed by Wes Anderson, movies made from graphic novels, and Beatles movies. It is way too tedious to list my favorite movies, so I included every broad, general category I could think of that it would fit under.
When reading, I tend to enjoy realistic, uneventful, yet interesting plots that people can relate to the most. Therefore, I never read fantasy or science fiction books (unless it's more supernatural Stephen King than blowing up aliens in space). My favorite books that I've read so far are One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Heyday, The Meaning of Night, Farenheit 451, Phantom of the Opera by Leroux, Phantom by Susan Kay, Superman and The Shining. I also despise typical teenage angst books that dominate Young Adult bookshelves everywhere. I'm currently reading A Clockwork Orange, a book about The Beatles, and the dictionary.
I love art, music, tea, puzzles, wit, dancing, spring, intellectual debates, British accents, waving to random people, hugs, top hats and tailcoats, being barefoot, lying down on the floor and or rolling around in the grass, squirrels, genetically deformed clovers, thunderstorms and or lightning, Polaroids, pastries, dark humor, incense, percussion instruments, rings, cameras, making mix CDs, photography books, garage sales, VW Bugs, narwhals, and People Watching.
I hate patronizing, hypocrisy, sweeping generalizations, presumptuous accusations based on little or no evidence, wrongful grading and teachers, immaturity, whining, spoiled people, ignorance, Bush, fad bands, lack of trust, correct judgement, understanding, and overall common sense in the aftermath of a school shooting, government employed persons who lie to the public, such as National Guard recruiters, tailgaters, and shaving cuts.
Things that make me greener and more hippie-like than the average American citizen: Being Secretary of the school's Student Environmental Activists club (though I'll likely be President this coming year), I recycle, even when it's not convenient, I buy second-hand clothing, I bicycle a lot, I naturally dry my hands in public bathrooms, I don't buy disposable plates/utensils, I rarely eat meat, I use mostly recycled paper products, I buy and eat organic food, I use mostly flourescent light bulbs, I use mostly rechargeable batteries, I do not use chemicals in my yard, I use water bottles instead of buying bottled water, I reuse paper and plastic bags, I shop with tote bags, I use digital cameras or film cameras but not disposable cameras, I donate clothes and other items instead of throwing them away, I only turn on the lights when I need to, I use towels more than once before washing them, I support environmentally-friendly candidates, I car-pool, I do not take distant vacations, I live in a small house (where we use a wood stove for heating in the winter and keep the windows open during the summer), I use mostly all-natural, biodegradable cleaning products, I support local farmers, I try not to use styrofoam cups, I have a compost bin, I hope to buy a hybrid car and live in an environmentally-friendly house when I'm older, and when the day comes that I can't take anymore of our Earth-raping culture and ways, and feel that there is no hope in trying to change peoples' minds, I shall become a freegan.
I think my introduction is too long.
