Hi! *waves*
I'm from Portugal!

Um, wow, there seem to be some misconceptions here about what Portuguese *sounds* like. Pronunctiation aside, yes, it is incredibly alike Spanish, but if I were to make the 100km trip or so to Spain and talk Portuguese (fluently) to them, I guarantee that most of them would just grow a fluorescent question mark on their heads. ^^

As for the diference between Portuguese from Portugal and from Brasil: it's basically the same thing (grammar quirks and expressions aside) except - once again - on the pronunctiation aspect. I've been told that Portuguese is reminiscent of Russian, while Brazilian has a much more sing-song, rounded tone to it.

I don't know of any good online dictionaries. Sadly, I don't think there are any. Babelfish is the monstrosity that should never have been, and as for all random others that I have come upon, I found them to be very poor.

Ah, well... if anyone has any questions, I'm at your disposal! ^^

PS - Never walk up to a Portuguese and say that Portugal is about the same thing as Spain. There's a good chance that they won't like it. ; )

Believe it or not, a lot of people who barely know anything about it, tend to have that idea (and crazier ones too). I've heard more times than I can count that Portugal is either a province of Spain, this island somewhere in the Pacific, or perhaps even in South America. It's fairly annoying, especially given Portugal's History, eheh... wink

A lot of people are culturaly/geegraphically ignorant. I'd also say it's because of lack of respect for other cultures. 3nodding

i work in a place full of people from portugal, im starting to pick up some words kind of a little.
i still get amused when i hear people talking, cos portuguese sounds so angrry lol
the first time i was paying attention to a conversation i thought the two people were going to kill each other, afterwards i asked what it was about, and one of the guys was like "oh, we were talking about walking my dog"
portuguese is an awesome language

I'm Brazilian, and I would be happy to help anyone with the Portuguese language, or even teach it (through the internet). As someone said before, the grammar and vocabulary are almost identical to the Portugal Portuguese, but the pronouncing is very different.

If anyone is interested, PM-me or e-mail me. pirate

I love ielanguages.com. It was my homepage for a long while, but now it's a site that generates random French vocabulary.
