It was at this moment that he felt a light stitch attack his abdomen. That was the story of his life really. Still, because it was the story of his life he was now no stranger to fighting it. He liked to think that every stitch and little pain overcome made his spirit stronger, although his mother would probably say that it hurt his body. To ignore the pain his mind cast around for things to focus on, apart from his sword repetitions. Being a true emale Kane was gifted with the ability, and sometimes the curse, of multitasking. He was glad that his room was large enough for his exercises, since Kane was never really that outgoing of a person. Hide had been the true spokesperson of the family, with both him and Hana, maybe, standing (on Kane's part anyway) voluntarily in his shadow. As Kane corrected his block with a frown he realised how much his life had changed for the better and for the worse since Hide died.

Yes, he'd been forced to socialise more, for real. Before he was just some random guy people thought was a little weird, who people hung out with for a while but never really remembered. And he didn't mind, because he had his brother. But now... starting on his sixth set of repetitions, Kane thought about how these past few months he'd been forced to assume all kinds of responsibilities. It's safe to say that he had matured a lot during these past few months, even if he still didn't have any friends. The only friend he'd had in Shimagakure had actually been Hyuuga Hiro, but Kane could barely remember anything about him now. That was a testament to their friendship, really. The last Kane heard he'd been sent back to the mainland for some training. As he did more of the sword cuts he'd practised for so long, two things flashed past Kane's mind. First, that he had no one to celebrate tomorrow with save his family, and two, that the pain in his side was gone. It was time to get serious.

Kane finished his 6th set of 10 slashes with a renewed, determined expression and immediately started on the 7th. He was really getting into rhythm now, which was a shame because a glance at the clock revealed that dinner would be served soon. Still, he'd pour all his efforts into his training until that time. Kane liked the simple, almost mindless activity of drills because, like he'd said, they required almost no brainpower except to correct incorrect posture and he could spend it thinking about the day. The sweat and fatigue from the exercise also made him feel cleansed, both from the strains sustained during the day (contradictory, he knew) as well as his past mistakes. Last but not least was the order of it all. Even if the whole world was upturned, Kane would make sure he'd do everything humanely possible to ensure that his drills continued on. With all that and the natural improvement of his skills through this exercise and he wondered why people hated drills. To him they weren't boring one bit.

Evening was coming down fast as Shin's long legs formed an even longer shadow as he took steps towards Hanabira's home. The Nara boy had felt pretty distant from all of his friends lately. He had been sick and a lot of the students had been leaving. Just when the boy was forming great friendships with them, they left to return to their families. Still, the dusty haired boy hadn't longed for home to the point where he'd want to return. As he walked through the chilly alleys towards the Yamanaka flower shop which was Hanabira's home, Shin felt a warm fuzzy feeling start from the pit of his stomach and work up along his chest. Here he was visiting a girl from school. He had visited Tanu before and Tanu had visited him, but this was rather different. Shin had a little crush on the girl he was visiting today... Her cute little freckles and her shy yet kind disposition. Those features that defined Hanabira's surface made Shin blush at the thought of have holding her hand during the festival.
Bringing that sweaty hand to the back of his head, Shin scratched his hair as he tried to shake the feeling. Coming to a stop in front of the door, the pre-teen took a second to calm his nerves before knocking. "The store's closed now, right? Should I be knocking.... Is it too late to be knocking?" Shinobu whispered to himself as he thought of these things. He was making himself nervous, which made him kind of want to sprint away from the door and go back to his dorm room!

"Dinner!" Seiteki called as she daintily cupped the extinguishing cover onto her lit stove. Moving the steaming casserole pot onto a coaster made of thickly woven dried grass on the table, she called her children again. Kane had guessed correctly in his first guess, and today's dinner was rice, steamed lettuce and meat stew with plum sauce.
With his mother's call travelling up to him from downstairs, Kane answered with a loud "Coming!" After freshening up a bit (just because they were family didn't mean he had to stink up the place while they were eating, and especially because they were eating, after all) he trotted down the stairs, sometimes skipping a step. The aromatic smell of dinner almost turned him towards the direction of the kitchen/dining room like iron to a magnet. However, the sound of knocking stopped him. Making his way up to the door, Kane looked through the doorhole to see a small boy. It was actually pretty funny for him to be using the word small, since he hadn't been that tall until recently. In fact, he'd had to strain to look comfortably through the doorhole until a couple of weeks ago. But he was getting off the point here. After discerning that the boy was reasonably harmless, Kane opened the door to get a better look at him.
"Hi, what are you looking for at this late hour..." he began to say automatically, before his gaze narrowed onto certain features that Shin possessed and something clicked in his brain. "Oh... you're that kid! Hanachan's... ah... I forgot your name." Then Kane smiled apologetically, showing the slightest hint of teeth. "We can get to that later, if you're free. Are you just here on a quick request or would you rather like to come in? I'm sure my mother wouldn't mind feeding an extra mouth."

As Shin stood at the door he heard someone yell 'Dinner! and another yell 'Coming' which made him freeze up like he had just been petrified. He didn't notice that someone was peering through the door hole or that there was even a door hole there, but far to suddenly for him, a young man opened the door. "I, uhm," Shin began just a little taken aback by the friendliness of the young man. This must've been Kane! Had Shin met him before? Mentally scratching his head, Shinobu just couldn't remember, but the Yamanaka was inviting him in. "Well, uh, I was just wanting to stop by and visit Hanabira-chan. I-," Shin said, his hand twidling at his sides as he spoke. He took a big gulp trying to force the lump in his throat to go down. "I just haven't seen her around lately," the boy stammered out giving Kane a slight crooked smile, making his eyes squint slightly as he scratched the back of his head.
"If your family is busy, I can come back tomorrow," the dusty haired boy said getting a little more relaxed and back into his own personality. The initial shock of visiting the home of the girl he had butterflies for was passing by now. He had heard someone yell dinner and figured that it wouldn't be a bad idea to sit down and eat with Hanabira and her family, but Shin would never impose. After being sick for so long, it would be nice to get some nutrition motherly food in his stomach. "Since it would be rather late if I came back tonight..." Shin said turning away from Kane to look out and around. The shadows from the setting sun were slowly turning into night.
There would be no shadows tonight since there was no moon. Lately Shin had been paying close attention to shadows. There was something that pulled him towards them. They were like an extension of his body something that could stretch and shorten as the day went on. What if there was some trick to actually make those shadows an extension of his body! At this realization, Shin's facial features perked up as he looked at Kane with surprise. He quickly wiped it off, realizing that the handsome man in front of him wouldn't understand why the Nara was just so surprised... Letting out a small cough, Shin looked down at the ground and just let up a small smile at Kane.

[Sorry I took so long to post I was swamped yesterday with work :< BTW you can totally NPC Seiteki if you wish ^^]
Well, Hanachan could have worse suitors, Kane supposed, as he suppressed a smile looking down at this stuttering boy in front of (and below... below!) him. Although it was admittedly difficult for him to do so, and the expression that came out ended up looking more like a happy smirk than anything else. "We're not busy," he assured Shin. "Not too busy to entertain people, anyway. Come on," Kane urged him, stepping back to let the shy boy in. His mouth stretched wider in an easier smile now that he'd at least realised who this kid was, and he relaxed. Shin's concern for Hanabira was really quite touching and cute, and Kane was happy for his sister that she had someone like that in her life. Although he certainly did not and would not approve of any relationship that went too far, at her young age...
Turning to the kitchen, Kane took the opportunity to holler "Mum! We've got company!" As he turned back to Shin, Kane realised that he may as well introduce himself, if Shin didn't know him already.
"I'm Kane," he said, as they moved to the dining room, smoothly flicking a thumb towards himself in a casual gesture. "I swear I know your name..." After thinking for a moment, Kane asked, "Does it begin with an S?"

Kane finally learned Shin's name and together they sat with Seiteki to have a great dinner. However, Hanabira did not turn up as she was too busy upstairs. Seiteki later took dinner up to her. After bidding Shin goodbye, Kane went to bed, excited at the prospect of tomorrow.

[That's fine. I'm sorry, Kouri. sweatdrop I got busy again.]
Shin stayed for dinner, happily being invited in. He complimented Seiteki nearly a hundred times about how wonderful her cooking was and he understood where Hanabira got it since she had brought him some food when he first got sick. Shin was disappointed that Hanabira didn't come down to visit him, but he wouldn't pry at her. Perhaps she had many studies to catch up on like himself. Shin found Kane to be a great big brother and left on good relations.

{Sorry!!!!!!!! I said I'd post that's why Zuzzy came!!!!!}
After hearing that Shin had stopped by the previous night, Hanabira had felt bad since she had dug herself within her studies and was thinking of a new genjutsu. After getting up for her normal morning routine, she brought her dirty plate down from her room, sadly meaning that she had kept it in there the entire night after eating the food that Seiteki had brought up. Hanabira tried to sneak out quietly without her brother or mother noticing, but she was sure her brother would notice. He does have quite the good sense of things. She had been stuffed up in the house for far too long... It was time to get some of that fresh cool air in her lungs! Grabbing a notebook to write down notes for her ideas, Hanabira continued out the door with her heavy jacket on ready to think.
Opening her notebook, Hanabira reviewed her notes from last night. She had been thinking about her friends, their personalities and her own personality. The shy girl had always stood on the sidelines watching how others interact with one another. Being the shy girl had come in handy since it was aiding her in thinking towards new ways in utilizing her henge. Hanabira caught up on her notes and began to further them, using her pencil she wrote and walked at the same time heading towards the bamboo forest where she would be able to think clearly in this cold weather.

"Kane, wait," Seiteki commanded as he got up to leave.
It was just like any other day except that today was Kane's birthday, and he had been a little disappointed when he'd checked Hana's room upon hearing a few sounds in the early morning.
"I have something for you," she told him, her tone softening, her mouth stretched into a small, proud smile.
Perhaps we should backtrack a little. After having dinner with Shin, Kane was impressed and thought that maybe he wasn't such a bad kid after all. He was certainly conscientious and polite and knew how to treat his elders - with respect. After Shin left, Kane turned to his mother with puppy eyes. He was right; she had fermented some leftover plums to make ume-shuu, or plum wine. But she would have none of it. "Tomorrow," she had said and because Kane could see her point, he reluctantly kissed her goodnight and went to bed.
And now it was today. After a great breakfast, Kane's contented heart jumped a beat at her words, thinking that maybe... maybe... he would finally get to try some of that stuff. Not that he hadn't before. In the mainland his friends had not exactly been the completely straight and narrow type. They hadn't been total crooks, but they certainly knew their way around the loopholes of the law, and Kane had tried his share of illegal alcohol. But it hadn't been his mother's. And he hadn't drank it legally. The two years in Shimagakure and his experiences had changed him for the better, and he had grown more righteous, more honest, more polite.
But it wasn't. Be still his beating heart.
Seiteki saw Kane's expression fall when he saw her carry out a distinctly un-wine pot shaped package and she chuckled a little upon seeing this, although she did feel a little worried that he was so into alcohol at his young age. Although it was understandable. She hoped it was just a phase. Regardless, her smile widened when she saw Kane realise just exactly what a long, thin, curved package with a pointed edge meant.
"This is for you, baby," she said, and couldn't help but choke a little. Masa had given this to her years ago, before everything had gone wrong. Hide hadn't received anything, but Kane had had this specially reserved for him. "The traditional Yamanaka dao." She handed it to Kane, who received it with two hands, and embraced him tightly, which he readily returned, transferring the handle of his dao to his left hand and wrapping his right tightly around her. She could feel his muscles flexed and moving as he hugged her, and the excitement moving through his body. She knew he couldn't wait to use it. So she was the one who pulled away first, and she put her hands up on his shoulders. He was so tall now. She was so, so proud.
"I know that you've been practising your dao strokes, Kane," she told him. "You can use this now. Today's the sports festival," she said, changing tack, although it would join up with what she was saying when she added, "Go out there and make me proud. It's your 16th birthday, Kane," she finished, her eyes sparkling. "I don't expect you home until dinner, and you will be in for a surprise."

On his way to the Yamanka Hanya, Shin had heard about a relay. Were they really having another festival? This village was so wonderful with all their festivals and activities. Shin remembered the last festival and how he had really met Hanabira. A small blush grazed his cheeks that were already reddened from the slight cold and it made him smile. As he was approaching the Yamanaka residence, Shin caught a glimpse of the girl that had just made him blush. She wasn't heading down to the lagoon like everyone else... Where was he going? And so, Shin decided to follow her... with a little stealth. As Hanabira moved through the snow covered dirt roads, Shin moved with her. Keeping hist distance, he hid behind buildings, trees and piles of snow.

Crossing down from the bamboo path was an easy task to do with the light Hanabira on his back. It almost cost him no effort at all to carry her all the way down to the forest here to town. Shin made sure to stick to the small alleyways, so that the wouldn't have to worry about bumping into any villagers with Hanabira's wounded ankle. "Three?" Shin asked back, thinking that a clan with such strong personalities would have many more members here in Shimagakure. He could tell that Hanabira wasn't up for much talking about the Kun Kumo's. Since she knew there were three, she must've met all three and didn't have fond memories of them... Giving a small sigh at his failure to try and cheer Hanabira up, Shin looked around the village to see the banners hanging for the sports festival. He hadn't participated all day since he wanted to train to catch up in the academy. If he was able to finish the exercise that Hanabira gave him, he thought that he could maybe make the evening dinner for the festival. "Have you ever been to the sports festival, Hana-chan?" Shin asked with a little more happiness to his tone. He would change the subject for her and investigate the Kun Kumo's later.
