Ename, to a certain degree, actually gives the cave-bound Sentinels warning of the monster's charge whether or not she actually sees the attack coming-- because she is the reason that Bristletuft, who had glanced away in annoyance at the approach of the Artisan, was facing towards the cave entrance and not towards the returning Sentinels when the monster charged.

The flurry of movement that follows is abrupt and loud-- the huge Elite leaps straight up in the air, wings spread, and hoots so loudly that the cave rings with the sound. There is no time for orders or battle plans, because the creature is among them in the next moment, ripping and shredding and flinging bat bodies every which way... and barreling its way towards the other Sentinels, with Bristletuft's talons digging into its back.

The Elite is dragged along with the beast, cursing and shrieking violently the entire way. Her wings beat madly in the enclosed space, trying (and failing) to slow or halt the charge of the furious creature.

Ename peered up at Bristletuft when she took off, barely making out that there was something coming her way before she felt the swoosh of air as something, a head or claws, passed a mere feather's width from her back. She dove away from the beast, wings tucked in tight as she did her best to get away. Whatever it was, it was a nasty thing. She took the opportunity of Bristletuft's attacking it to get around behind the beast. At least it couldn't see her directly there. The old bird grimaced, watching the battle. The storm behind and the beast in front...things were not looking up for the cave-bound group. Ename hunkered down beside a rocky outcropping. With luck it would provide a little protection. If not...well, best not think about that.

Arbutus can feel something sink in his chest at the sight of the charging fiend.

Screeching loudly, he launches himself into the air above the bat pile, angrily raking the air with his talons. The next instant, a sudden flash of the monster’s fangs sees Arbutus buffeted away by the beast’s thrashing muzzle- sending him crashing into his former mossy perch on the cave wall.

Momentarily disoriented (and dazed), he turbulently flaps his wings in an effort to right himself, desperately searching for the snarling opponent.

Somehow, he’d almost believed the worst of this wretched night had been over.

As she was facing towards the inside of the cave, Sandstorm had no idea what was coming ahead. Everything happened too quickly: it may have been the stench, or the snarling, or even Bristletuft's hoot that alarmed her to turn around and face a mouth-full of yellow teeth charging her way, the Elite clinging onto its back and flapping furiously.

There were only two options for her: either to dodge the beast and possibly be snagged by those long, disgustingly dirty claws, or jump and attack its face. The second option was easily the most dangerous, because there she was vulnerable to both claws and teeth, but if she leapt far enough and landed on the top of the head rather than the face, she may be able to do a considerable amount of damage.

Running away was never her style[there are exemptions to annoying bafoons who are too full of themselves].

With only a few seconds to get ready, Sandstorm braced herself before emitting a piercing shriek: this was a warning for Dune, who had already hid further into the cave by some loose rocks. If she were to be injured, or worse, it was his order to get as far away from the cave as possible.

Before the call was even done, the aberrant leapt as far as she could without hitting her head against the cavern ceiling, her claws outstretched and aiming for his eyes. With any luck, it won't see her coming [at first] with all of the dead bat bodies being flung about.

Bristletuft was lucky not to have injured her head when making the leap onto the monsters back, and she will have to stay low to avoid smacking against the low ceiling as the snarling beast bucks and thrashes to get rid of her.

The monster seems to be even more furious now, with the pain from Bristletuft's talons further aggravating it. A few of Arbutus feathers are stuck in the corner of its mouth, but thankfully it seems that fluffy chest feathers were the only part of the Wildtype it managed to catch between its jaws.

Cornered in a desperate situation the monster turns a snarling head towards the approaching talons readying itself to do as much damage as possible until it goes down. Yellow fangs snap at Sandstorm's feathery legs, and close only a talon's tip away from the meat and bone - but again, comes off with nothing but feathers.

Sandstorm's talons, on the other hand, connects better and rips up a small gash in the creature's blind spot, just beneath the scarred eye. The monster snarls again and sets off running even further into the cave, where the ceiling is lower and it will be able to flatten the nasty creature on its back against the hard rock.

Bristletuft was lucky, yes-- but despite her great bulk and her experience, her luck does not hold for long. Her talons are locked in the beast, and she would not have time to will them open even if she wanted to. The Elite gives another vehement curse as she sees where the monster is headed, but all she can do is hang on for the ride, and duck.

And so she does duck, pulling her wings in and her head down to try and flatten herself against the creature's back. But Bristletuft is very large, and the ceiling is very low. She slams into the rock above and is pushed backwards...

...with her talons still firmly locked in the angry monster's back.

Ename watched stoically from her hideout as the trio fluttered and lunged at the beast. It was a foul one alright, all jaws and claws. It seemed the tide was turning to favor them though, as Sandstorm got a good hit in. It was still far from done though, apparently. The beast took off a moment later and Ename hopped along as best she could, keeping close to the wall while trying to think of some way to help. She was far too old to attack directly...but maybe with her will? She paused to gather a few pebbles to herself, as she had before the bats, but was jolted at the sound of Bristletuft hitting the ceiling. "Musfeathers..." She hissed, picking up the pace. Ducking around rocky hangings, she sighted the thing once, and took aim, lobbing a rock at it before darting back behind a stone for cover. Distantly she felt rather pathetic, only able to toss little stones to defend herself, but it was better than nothing, right?

Having regained his footing, Arbutus' lets loose a piercing screech and takes off again after the rampaging brute, chunks of moss and loose stone clutched firmly within his talons.

Aiming to broadside it in the minimal air space, Arbutus releases the debris and shoves outward with his Will at the monster's face. Breathing hard from exertion, he slams into its side the next moment , talons raised as he tries to find purchase in it's neck.

Talons clutched on impact as Sandstorm prevented herself from falling. She was lucky enough to have landed so low that so far, the ceiling isn't a threat, though she watched Bristletuft get knocked pretty fiercely. It seemed that she may have hit something, too, as the beast quickened his speed as he went further into the cave.

This is not good, Sandstorm thought. Deeper into the cavern meant lower ceilings, which meant that both Bristletuft and herself are in a good amount of trouble.

Mustering up as much will power as possible, she attempted to attack again by clinging one claw closest to the blind eye for support, and slicing the other side of the monster's face with the other set of talons, her wings wildly flapping to keep her balance straight.

Whether it worked or not, she didn't have another chance to try it again. A few stones that were thrown by Arbutus and Ename had missed and hit her instead, and if that wasn't enough to completely knock her off, Arbutus's slam did.

She felt herself falling sideways, and tried to regain her hold by grasping at the neck.

[I'll let the Herald decide if her swipe hit or missed, and if she managed to grab ahold of the neck or not]

((We left the monster's actions vague enough to let you decide that, until she is forced to let go when the beast makes it further in! --The Herald))

Talons in its back, white-hot slashes on its face and neck, rocks from nowhere, and a Sentinel attack from each side; each attack on its own would be enough to send the monster into a raging fury. All these attacks together, however, are another story entirely. Just before it reaches safety of its inner den the beast is halted abruptly by an unexpected obstacle - the rather large Elite locked to its back.

Snarling viciously, the monster endures the pain and surges forward despite the weight dragging upon his back (and any others who may have latched on during its mindless charge). All attempts to attack have been abandoned while it tries desperately to reach the narrow depths of its home, and finally the creature wrestles itself free and disappears into the darkness. The Sentinels could follow, one at a time, if they suffered from a sudden suicidal urge. As the growls of the beast die down there's a sudden distant peal of thunder that just keeps rolling on and on and on, as if somewhere out there, the rain has momentarily been replaced by lightning strikes. It seemed to come from the direction of the Deep Woods...

Bristletuft's valiant ride and subsequent impact with the ceiling of the cave is not in vain - she is left with a souvenir, a grisly trophy locked within her talons. The badger didn't really need its pelt, did it?

Dazed and sore, Bristletuft rights herself after a moment-- only to topple back onto her hocks. Her talons are still locked on the bloody hunk of pelt she removed from the slavering badger, and it's awfully hard to stand on bunched feet. With a scowl, she forces her toes apart, and the large strip of flesh is released. The Elite stands and peers quickly around the cave, locating each of the other Sentinels by sight. Nobody dead? Good.

The weather outside is... changing. The rapid lightning strikes catch Bristletuft's attention, and she realizes that the Thunderbird is releasing his last wave of fury on Noctua. The assembled Sentinels have a choice between staying in a cave with an angry, injured beast... or braving the lessening storm outside. For the Elite, that is no choice at all.

"Everyone on your feet if you still have 'em!" Bristletuft barks. "We can't stay here."

Ename appeared from behind her rocky perch at Bristletuft's call. Indeed it did seem the rain was slowing, and she was itching as much as anyone to get out of there. "Lovely gift the badger gave you, m'dear." She peered at the pelt a moment, distractedly thinking how it could be used in, or as inspiration for, some masks. Of course there was other work to do first. "Since the bats by the front of the cave are napping, should we perhaps get to strapping them to our claws to fly out to help the clan resupply?"

With the demon having fled into its den, Arbutus wastes no time in obeying the Elite's order. Rapidly shuffling back toward the entrance, he eyes the grisly trophy in passing, silently hoping he'll never see it again.

Upon reaching what's left of the bat mound, he hungrily gulps two down and sets to collecting a goodly amount in his talons. “There's more here then I'll be able to manage in one trip, if you would.” he replies in response to Ename's query- still with the heightened volume.

Though it might seem as though Duskwater is being quite reckless in flying through the storm the way he does, but he knows what he's doing and he's very wary of every little change in the air. His descent is every bit as calculated and careful as Lichen's, only somewhat quicker.

Spotting no signs whatsoever of a crash, the large elite veers slightly in the direction of the cave he had seen previously, and berates himself for not remembering to ask what the aberrant female was supposed to look like. If she was really dark he might have missed her already. He didn't think so, but the thought nagged at him.

Coming up on the cave, however, he is instantly distraced as his sharp hearing picks up the unmistakeable sounds of sentinels screeching - and something else that's growling like only a large ground-dweller could do. He touches down at safe distance from the cave opening the moment that the canopy behind him suddenly turns horribly bright with lightning, and the resounding thunder that accompanies it makes him sleek his ear tufts back. That sounds like trouble, but in a different place and for a different time. The cave is his main concern - he can't hear the sounds of battle anymore, and approaches very carefully in case the only remaining inhabitant would turn out to be the ground-dweller, but when he sees sentinel shapes moving around at the cave mouth he visibly relaxes and lets out a strong, deep hoot to let them know of his precense.

"Hoo! Anyone hurt?"

Sandstorm felt her grip slide as the badger ran deeper into his shelter, and by the time he scraped Bristletuft off of his back with the cavern's ceiling, the ranger had already fallen and laid in a crumpled heap by a few large rocks.

"...." While she didn't say anything, UGH was definitely ringing in her mind as she felt all her joints and muscles throb with a dull pain. After a few minutes of lying on the ground, she managed to gather enough strength to lift herself up, and at which point, began to stretch her wings and legs through a quick inspection. Nothing seemed to be broken or in so much pain that it would prevent her from moving or flying about in her own.

Good.

She hardly had the time to inspect the other sentinels before Bristletuft's order rang through her ear tufts: she's right. Better get out of here as fast as possible, and it looked like everyone was fine and ahead of her already. At the same time, Dune peeked his head from the same rocks nearby Sandstorm when he heard the call, and leapt next to his master when he concluded that the danger had past for now.

"Let's go," She spoke to him, inwardly pleased to see him still alive. They both turned around and stepped their way back to the entrance of the cave to meet with the others, in time to see the Ghost come in. Sandstorm stayed silent; seeing everyone moving around should be enough of a clue that nobody was hurt.
