Once full of pride and strength, Amaterasu's heart has grown heavy with shame and regret. She no longer trusts as easily as she used to in the past, especially kalona and skinwalkers, no matter how much of either of those breeds flows through the blood of a soquili. They are all evil, and she has yet to be proven otherwise. On the other hand, Amaterasu views unicorns as the purist breed; they are all good in her eyes, because how could a soquili with the ability to heal be evil? She does not discriminate against the other breeds, although she would be slightly more cautious with them than she would with a unicorn. Her encounter with Anju has placed a great fear in her heart, one she is struggling to overcome.
She is a very social unicorn, enjoying the company of others, and after being on her own with Issun for so long, she feels just a little desperate for the company of another soquili. She is not quite ready to find a mate yet by far, but a companion she can put her faith in. Ideas and thoughts float in the back of her mind of something she wished to do long ago, before she exiled herself from the lands, to begin her own herd and aid soquili and two-leggers alike, and to fight off the evil souls that plague the Kawani lands. Amaterasu possesses the strength, leadership, and heart required to begin one's own herd, but all it needs is a little push to get her started.
Despite her growth over the years, Amaterasu still cannot quite shake off all of her upbringing -- she is haughty and dignified, finding vulgarity offensive and immature. But behind this is a heart of gold, one which beats powerfully with kindness and love for all good, pure creatures, wanting to reach out an envelope them all with protection and warmth. She is a wise mare, even if she does still have some growing up to do, and she is filled with the determination and resolve to fix all the mistakes of her past no matter what it takes, and pave her way into a brighter future in which the dark shadows creeping silently in the corners of her heart are no more. |

Amaterasu had always preferred to travel alone. When she was young, the unicorn was haughty and quite self-centered. She was of the mindset that unicorns were the one true breed... that she was better than everyone else. With this attitude, she didn't have very many friends as a filly. Not that she minded very much; if she was alone, she didn't have to worry about others feelings or needs, only her own. It was a lonely life, though, and by nature she was a social creature -- as Amaterasu grew older, she matured and became more humble. Although still dignified, she became more accepting of others that were not pure unicorns like herself. It was not until she met a small pesky raccoon by the name of Issun did she truly realize the error of her ways. She had rescued him, although by accident. One day she came upon a small river, and as she approached to drink the water, she had noticed a wolf trying to dig a hole in the ground by a tree. When the carnivore noticed her, he became startled and attacked Amaterasu. The wolf was, however, alone, and certainly stood no chance against a strong, healthy unicorn. The wolf fled, and Amaterasu noticed the hole was no ordinary hole at all. The wolf was not trying to bury something -- he had been trying to make the entrance of a burrow wider so he could get inside!
Out of the hole scurried a small raccoon, who looked up at his savior, recognizing Amaterasu as one of the noble unicorns. He was grateful to her for rescuing him, but Amaterasu insisted that she did not realize he was in danger. Still, Issun showered her with praise, and claimed that surely her stories of heroism must be seen and heard by all -- and who better to tell the tales than one who had experienced a rescue first hand? But Amaterasu didn't understand: she was no hero. It seemed, however, that she had no say in the matter, as Issun had decided to follow along with her without her consent. Issun, however, had other ideas in mind when he decided to follow the baffled mare; he planned to use her for his own protection, attempting to use his grand promises of spreading her stories to the world to flatter her into accepting his companionship. The little raccoon seemed to always land himself in trouble, and frequently relied on Amaterasu to help him -- and she always did, every time.
Eventually, a bond of friendship formed between the pair. Issun, although no less mischievous than before, grew to respect Amaterasu and her inner strength that she displayed in times of danger, and Amaterasu had grown fond of her little raccoon companion. They continued to travel the lands together until Amaterasu discovered the Kawani village -- soquili and two-leggers, living side by side in peace. Intrigued, the unicorn decided to make her home here to observe these two-leggers. It was in the forest near the mountains when she met an injured resident of Kawani village by the name of Mingan Kishi, all alone and unable to walk. Taking pity on the man, Amaterasu lowered her horn to his leg, healing the injury. Although their meeting was brief, in her curiosity, Amaterasu frequently watched Mingan from afar, observing him and his interactions with other soquili.
But her peaceful time here was not meant to be. Her exploration around these lands also led her to encounter Anju, a shadowy beast of a soquili that stirred in her great feelings of fear. But Amaterasu was fooled by Anju, and her naivety led to carrying three of the beast's foals. She had vowed, then, to never be tricked by him again, to raise these foals to be good and pure, to share no likeness to their father -- but she was fooled again. As soon as the foals were born, Anju had returned, stealing them in her moment of weakness. She was unable to keep them safe. Unable to find them. Shame and despair washed over Amaterasu, and she ran from Kawani village, ran until exhaustion overcame her. She exiled herself from the lands she had only begun to call home.
For over a year she lived with a heavy heart, feeling lost and alone, even though Issun had never abandoned her. Time had taken it's toll on the unicorn -- she knew what she needed to do. While she may have been unable to save her foals at the time Anju had stolen them, that didn't mean it was too late to save them now. Her grief had overtaken her hope, but Amaterasu has grown over this past year, and with new determination, she traveled back to the Kawani lands with Issun -- her only hope is that her children will forgive her for abandoning them. That it isn't too late to save them... |
