Conner finished his food before replying.

"You'll probably get that feeling a lot, the trick is to keep yourself occupied until the cacky hits the fan." He then added. "But it has been quiet for a while, I'll grant you that. Guess it should be something to be thankful for." He mused but he didn't feel thankful, he felt bored, mainly. It had taken a while but a question that had needed asking for a while nudged it's way into his head. He glanced at his watch. "Where's the rest of the household got to?" he asked aloud "This place is usually at least vaguely busy by now."

"That's what I was told," she replied, not knowing if he wanted one, "That's why I made the extra food...but it's probably all gone cold now."

She looked out the window into the snowy expanse. It seemed so peaceful out there, so quiet. It wasn't that much unlike the inside. Yet she had been told, warned really, that this place was so full of life sometimes that it nearly busted the walls.

"Yes, of course I am a mutant," nodded The Professor respectfully, in reference to Rebecca's statement. He could tell that she was shy and most likely scared, but she warmed up enough after a few silent moment to sit in the chair left especially for her.

"I founded this Institute," he continued, with a warm smile. "So yes. Of course, I can help you, so long as you wish to be helped, of course."

He could see it, he could feel it, he could almost smell it. The wall of flame that encased him, the awful stink of burning insect, then the wall of water, enveloping him, crushing him, blocking out everything; the light, the heat, even the smell as the water seeped into his nose and mouth and slowly smothered him as he flailed, trying to swim up....

Owen gasped and sat up, nearly breaking his head open on the low ceiling of the hole in the concrete that he used for sleeping in. He had widened it a little before the cold weather had really set in, because he knew that with the amount of body heat he gave off, many of his little friends in the church would want to move to the hole where he slept, and though he didn't mind their company, being squashed in a too-small hole full of spiders could get a little....uncomfortable. And those nightmares he had been having since the mall incident tended to make him thrash around, and he didn't want anyone hurt on his account.
He rubbed his eyes and crawled out of the hole, trailing bits of cloth like streamers. The light shining through the stained glass was weak, but he could see the snow clinging to the bottom sill on the outside. He smiled in spite of himself; snow may be cold, but it signaled a quiet day, and even if anybody was willing to brave the cold, they would be throwing snowballs instead of rocks or bottles. Who knows, he thought, I may just go out and play in it. He had a well-worn coat that he had swiped off a park bench a few weeks ago, and it kept him warm enough, though it went almost to his knees.
He walked over to a bundle of cloth and pulled the coat out, examining it in the meager light. It was actually a pretty good coat; just well used. Sparing no thought for its previous owner, he slipped it on and nimbly climbed down the west wall until he was standing on the freezing stone floor of the sanctuary. He walked to the door, listening to his footsteps echo, then down the stairs and out the entrance, where he stopped and lifted his head, enjoying the icy feathery caresses of the falling snowflakes. THe world was shrouded in white, and it was so serene....
Smiling bigger than he had smiled since winter began, he crouched down and began to make snowballs.

Sarah nodded and glanced at Marie who seemed to have spaced out on them. "Wakie, wakie." She said and pelted Marie with the snowball she had in her hand. Sarah paused thinking on that. "So you want to go to...." She said slowly puzzling through the cryptic meaning of her words. Sarah was still new to the whole X-men Brotherhood rivalry thing so she she was really guessing. "....to that other place...you know..." She was gropping for the name. "And pelt them for a bit?" She said moving on since she assumed Victoria would know what she meant...at least Sarah was hoping she knew.

Becca sat there a moment, her eyes moving from the kind-faced professor, past the lush decorated room to the window outside. From within the warm room, the snowy scene outside looked pristine, much unlike it had before. Her mind whizzed with novel thoughts. Her gaze returned to the professor.

"I would like to be helped," she said finally with a nod. "I would like that very much.

Conner looked back at the food.

"Yeah, that is a pity." He said. "Still, it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it." He added. He stood up and stretched. "There probably won't be any need for big meals until school finally starts up again." He said.

"Oh," Shandra said in embarrassment, "well I suppose that makes sense. When does school start back up?"

"Ding, ding," smiled Victoria and she shrugged in a bored sort of way as she pelted one last snowball at the X-Mansion. Turning to face Sarah, she packed another one between her gloves and simply held onto it for the time being. "We have a winner. But seriously...what else is there to do around here? Life is so boring without some opposition."

"Well, in that case," started the Professor again, following the plea of help from the young women across him. "I would like to extend an offer for you to stay here, at the institute, and learn to control and make good use of your powers along with other young mutants such as yourself. Room and board will be taken care of, of course, and we will be sure to enroll you into Bayville High before the next semester."

“I get to finish school?” Becca blurted, clearly surprised yet pleased with the idea. “I would very much like to accept that offer!” she said quickly

He doesn’t look at me like they did, she thought, recalling her parents reaction when they realized what she was; their faces full of disapproval mingling with worry and a sadness only seen when someone was dying. Maybe this isn’t the end.

“I’ll work hard, I promise,” she said, realizing she wouldn’t need to try to find someplace relatively safe and warm to sleep tonight. “I promise,” she said again, smiling.

"But of course," Xavier chuckled and he reassured the girl with a nod. "I can speak with the Headmistress about you as early as next week, if you like."

"And I have no doubt that you'll work hard," he continued, easily. "You seem more then eager to be here, which is not something I can say about all my students," he continued, and cleared his throat as he decided to change subject.

"As for a room, the young ladies dorms are on the west wing of the second level. Just pick whichever unclaimed room suits your tastes and unpack or decorate however you see fit. Unfortunately, most of my students are away for the holiday's but there are bound to be a few lounging here and there if you have any questions. My office door is always opened, as well."

Conner stopped mid stretch as he tried to recall the date that Bayville high, he was sure someone, possibly the professor, had told him. nope, mind's blank He thought.

"I haven't the faintest idea, hen. Your best off asking one of the other students, I'm done with my educational years." He said, then remembered the extra engineering courses. "Well, mostly." He leaned back against the table and turned his head towards the girl, suddenly realizing that he didn't know anything about her, not even her name. "I'm Conner by the way." He added. "Conner Hale."

“Being here is better than back out there,” she said, rising as the conference seemed to be over. She lifted the large knapsack that sat at her feet, hoisting it onto her shoulder.

“Thank you,” she said. “For everything.”

Becca made her way to the door, glancing back to Xavier quickly before slipping out. It all seemed too easy. Hone her skills in return for room, board and school? That was it? And yet she did not question it. Even with some sort of catch, being here was better than being on the road again.

"Shandra," she said with a little reluctance, "But I prefer Eclipse, no bad memories with that name yet. And for the most part I'm done with High School too, just this last half year seeing as I placed high in everything..."

She bit her lip as she got up and sat down at the table. For some reason she didn't think that sitting that far away was nice to do if he had wanted to talk. She just got the feeling that it was a little rude. But now she felt a little presumptuous for moving.

'I'm never right...not even to myself it seems,' she thought, jokingly as she tried to flush away her embarrassment.

Becca hoisted her bag higher onto her shoulder and made her way down the hall. West wing was where the girl's dorms lay but her path led down the hall to the kitchen. The smell of recently prepared food made her stomach growl savagely.

Two figures came into view, the familiar face of Conner and a red-haired girl. Becca set her bag down against the wall and walked to where a cold breakfast rested in a now cold pan. A quick glance to the pair and she snatched a piece of bacon.

"Hi," she said with a shy smile, more to the girl she didn't know. New housemate? Likely.
