A bassist should be able to use several different styles, depending on the style of music that is being played. You would be hard pressed to find a bassist that can keep up to a punk or metal guitarists "machine-gun strum" using only theyre fingers.

Usually you don't need to pick all those notes though the tremlo effect is just that for effect.

Both. I use to be able to play with my fingers and match half the speed I could play with a pick. Now I cant get back to that seed. Used a pick all summer cause I got a really cool on from Japan. I need to work on my finger speed so I stopped using a pick. Really it depends on the song that is being played. Some songs need a pick others really need fingers.

ZOMGAsa well, thanks to you all, I've been able to finally play with two fingers, I've been working on that pick to fingers thing and I can play New Born and Hysteria in time. Thank you all. I'm still having trouble with New Born even though I've been practicing it for months on end now. I picked up Hysteria pretty easily, and it sounds sweet when I run my bass through my EH Big Muff. The bass riff for New Born kills my wrist and hand though, because of the movement pattern, and I have trouble moving the pattern up and down the fretboard without hitting bum notes at the moment. However, I do find that playing both New Born and Hysteria, along with many other songs that I play, come more naturally when playing with my fingers. I feel that I'm more aware of where the strings are when I use my fingers because I don't have to worry about where the pick is, and have an easier job of working my way around the bass because it's like second nature with my fingers.

Cliff Burton (R.I.P) - Metallica (Battery, Whiplash, The Four Horsemen) 2. Steve Harris - Iron Maiden (The Trooper, Run To The Hills) 3. Tom Araya - Slayer (Raining Blood, Angel Of Death, God Hates Us All) Just three out of many great metal bassists who pull machine-gun metal rhythm with nothing more than the fingers of their right hands.

Tom uses a pick. My bad. Could have sworn he was using fingers but then again vid I was watching wasn't very good quality. Oh well. Anyways, Rob Trujillo (Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica) is another one.

I prefer picks because I can jump from string to string just as well with a pick as I can with my fingers but there's no way I can play as fast with my fingers as I can with my pick. Also, the pick gives it a punchier sound rather than the muffled sound fingers give, which I prefer.

With three fingers. I love my pick, but I can't alternate with it at all. Hell, I can hardly hit the A or D with it without accidentally hitting the others.
Plus, you feel good when you're blistered up after a nice session.

Plus, you feel good when you're blistered up after a nice session. I couldn't possibly agree more! When you've been playing for a whole entire day with only toilet breaks and your fingers are raw...YUM! I can't count the number of times I've thought "s**t! I suck! I'm quitting the band!" then picked up a pen and said "OOOW! Yeah, I can't turn my back on my music!" I strummed a guitar with my thumb every day for about five years before I ever picked up a bass though so I have an AWFUL habit of using my thumb for slower lines.

In six months time you will be thinking, s**t I cant play double octave scales with a pick on sixteenth notes at more than 180. "When you are not practicing, remember, someone somewhere is practicing, and when you meet him he will win"
