No, but one of the clarinets didn't take good care of their instrument, and after a few months, there were maggots inside it. Eeww. It was really gross. Lol, I was amused though. Haha. Ha. Ha.

It's never happened to me... but there was an old, moldy reed in my sax's case when I got it; and I was all O_O 'Ooookkaaay...' Then I just threw it out. I take very good care of my reeds so they are all in good condition!
... can't say the same of Alex; he just puts his mouth piece guard over it and leaves the reed on the mouth piece... DISGUSTING! IT SHALL GROW MOLD!!! THEN I SHALL LAUGH!

Should this even be a question, I think most of my reeds have at some point, this is obviously the point at which I throw them out, as this usually happens before they start to split.

i have had it happen. that was bc i forgot to clean my clarinet for a week and left my reed in the mouthpiece for the same amount of time and kept the cover over it when i wasnt using it so the reed remained wet when i wasnt using it. it cracked easier when i did that and i didnt notice until one day when i noticed that it was growing mold and i couldnt sound the damn thing. it was gross and luckily i had 3 more reeds on me at that point.

xwildeye jokersx you really should just get a new reed when they start to grow mold... eek Maybe if you play clarinet or saxophone, but double reeds are expensive, and my best reed is basically irreplaceable, so when it finally gets trashed, it won't be because of mold but becuase it's worn out or broken and can't be repaired.

I guess in that situation it would be best to get rid of the mold by putting it in Listerine or lemon juice, right? (And then it would have a nice taste, too! xd )

I've had many moldy reeds, but for long time I didn't know what the heck was wrong with my reed, my first reed that became moldy was by the grossest looking thing I ever played on. But if that happens to anyone, just get a new one, don't continue playing on it because you could get sick from it.

None of my oboe reeds have ever gone over to the dark side, but some of my clarinet reeds have. Then i just look for the next best reed i have. I have also had a moldy bagpipe reed. I freaked out, even though with bagpipes you don't put your mouth on the reed. It was still gross. stressed

Well, I wouldn't say mold but rather spit discolorating. I keep a reed as long as it still plays, and sometimes it gets that green color on the back of it after awhile, but it's not all infested and gross like some of you guys' reeds... gonk If I see it, I usually run the reed under hot water and it goes away. I've never allowed my reeds to get unruly...

Quite frankly, I take very good care of my reeds. I can still play on some that are years old, and I've never grown mold on any of my reeds. I can't even recall the last time I chipped or cracked one... I play on strength 5 Vandoren 56's on clarinet, Medium hard Fibracell on alto and tenor sac, and strength 4 vandoren on Eb clarinet
