((sorry for the 'erasing half the post' thing, I just wanted to give you more interacting space. ^_^))
The girl breathed deeply, trying hard to control herself. Cleaning her forming tears discreetly, she mustered all her strength and turned around, facing the boy. Remember your surroundings, she told herself, You're not a teenager anymore.
"Yes, Nate?" Her tone was still icy cold, as was the plastic smile on her face.

"Please...I know I ahve broken your heart but I didn't mean to. I didn't say anything because I wanted to save you the heartbreak. I knw that I have made a horrible mistake, one that can't be forgiven." Nate explained. He hoped she would understand but then again, who would? It was ridiculous.

Mel looked at him for a few seconds. She had nearly forgotten his clumsy way of talking, his honest eyes. Looking at him again was strange, like being inside a dream. Only, this wasn't a dream. Suddenly, she could see clearly; all the pain, all the heartbreak she had kept for so long...there was really no point.
"You don't need to justify yourself. The past is the past." Her smile relaxed a bit; she felt like screaming at herself for letting her guard down so much, for being so affected by something that happened so long ago. "You acted like a kid all over again. You're a grown up woman now, Mellissa! Behave yourself!"
Sighing slightly, she regained her composure "Anyways, it's good to see you again, after all this time...How long have you worked here?" Her smile was polite, yet distant; she wasn't going to drown under the pain of the past again, but she wouldn't forget either.

"No, Mel please. I have made such a mistake. I didn't want to break your heart but I know I have." He said, ignoring her question for the moment but he would nswer it for he did not want her getting irritated with him. "I have worked here for a few months." He said with a sigh, he never took his eyes from her. He had almost forgotten how beautiful she was.

Mel looked at the boy, uncertain of her feelings. It was an issue she definitely didn't want to deal with right now. "It's ok...Really, I wont sulk about it years after!" Her smile wasn't as natural as she intended it to seem, but she had to keep in control.
"I'm sorry for my small...outburst. You startled me, that was all, I didn't count on finding you here. It's good to know you are ok, though..." She truly meant that. No matter how much he had hurt her, he would always be the first boy she had truly loved. And even though she was still hurting, the time and distance had swept away the hard pain and now to her mind returned the sweet memories of her high school years.
Her eyes warmed up, as did her smile. There would be time to discuss the heartbreak later. Even if there wasn't, she would deal with that by herself. Right now, she felt happy fate had lead her to review such an old, cherished friend.

"I know...and I'm sorry...I just feel so stupid...I should have let you known..." He sighed. He didn't know what to do. He still loved the girl but he wasn't sure that she felt the same. He had also remembered the times they had in high school, when they were paired up as science project partners and then when they fell in love. He felt small tears sting at his eyes from the memories but he made no movement to clear them away.

Mel sighed yet again. It was odd how something from so long ago could affect her so deeply. She had suffered from a long time, sure, but eventually she had pushed those feelings to a locked case in the deepest, darkest corner of her heart, and had overcome the pain. That it could all resurface so easily had been a shock to her.
"Yes, you should have. But it doesn't matter now...past can't be redone, right?" She smiled "Don't worry, I'm ok now. Life goes on, and time soothes everything, or so they say...But tell me, how have you been? How has life treated you?"
She still felt the urge to both slap and kiss him, but she decided to hide those. "I've been more than pathetic enough for a night" She thought, starting to retrace her steps towards the bar, slowly now, keeping pace with the boy; she knew he had to work, after all. James was gone from the bar, she noticed, probably to go meet Laura and dance and gossip.

Nate sighed as he returned to the bar with her. "Terrible..I have felt terrible for a long time.." He sighed again, not returning to his position behind the bar, that could wait. Right now he had more pressing matters to attend to. "What about you? Getting on well I hope." He said, his tone soft all throughout their conversation.

The girl leaned on the bar, looking at the boy...the man, he now was, who she had loved so dearly for so long.
"Well, nothing too exciting...I got into MIT, I took my Math and Computation major, but life gives a lot of unexpected twists, and I ended up working at my dad's Cafe..." She chuckled "A long way from my old ambitious dreams. I can't complain much, however."
Mel fell silent, staring at Nate's eyes. So many unspoken words, so much time, it weighed them down, like the few years they were apart were actually centuries and they didn't even know each other any more. She recalled his easy-going smile, his jokes, and how natural it felt to be with him. She couldn't help but to feel it again, the warm, soft, cozy feeling she always got near him.

Nate smiled for the first time since they started talking again. "Still going smart.." He said with a sigh as he looked at her as well. He felt the same way as he had always felt when around her. He had the irrisistable urge to kiss her once more but he held himself back, not knowing if she would want to or not. He found it hard to do but he held himself back.

Mel smiled back at him. She had missed that smile so much it amazed her. "Some things never change..." She said softly. His eyes seemed to draw her close. Somehow, it was just as the first time they had met; he was just as untouchable, yet just as irresistible.
"There you are! Care to introduce me to your boy friend?" Laura laughed, and Mel blushed for a second. "So, got tired of dancing already? Or was the flirting that took the best of you?" She replied, not keeping the sarcasm out of her voice.
"I see he didn't improve your mood, dear, but it's ok. You'll never believe who I saw back there! The super model Namine and Star Ferns are here tonight! I'm growing the courage to go up and talk to them."
Mel couldn't hold a laugh. Her friend was always a celebrity-spotter, and not at all ashamed. She half pitied the model and fashion designer who would have to bear with her. "Can't you just let them have a fun, Laura-free night out?" She was half annoyed, half relieved her friend had interrupted them. At least, she never allowed any uncomfortable silence to settle in.

Nate was also drawn close to her but they were interrupted by her friend. He blushed when she called him Mel's beyfriend. "Not for a long time..." He sighed in his head. He did not know what would happen after her friend leaves, if Mel would leave with her or if they would spend more time together. He was lost in thought of the times they had. The fun, the laughs, the silent moments they spent just enjoying each other's company.

"I can't see why my company would be a nuisance, but sure, have it your way. In that case, we have nothing left to do here...time to go!"
Mel felt suddenly dismayed. She had to go with Laura, she didn't have a car of her own and cabs were impossible to get at that hour. Sighing, she turned to say goodbye to Nate.
"I'm sorry, i really have to go." She felt split between being mad at him and not wanting to see him, feeling attracted to him and not wanting to leave, and being happy to have found a long lost friend she didn't want to loose contact with. For a moment, she was tempted to give him her number, but then thought better.
Leaning over to him, she tried not to let his soft scent take the best of her. "I'll see you around." She whispered in his ear, and then she kissed his cheek softly before turning and leaving. In his hand, she had discreetly placed a small card with the address of the Cafe. If he wanted to, he could drop by and chat. Or maybe he would just disappear all over again. She wasn't sure.

Nate watched as she left. He looked at the card as he felt where she had kissed his cheek. He sighed heavily and walked back behind the bar. He was quite depressed at her departure for the rest of the night. "I miss that kiss..." He said quietly to himself as he looked around the club. Everyone had begun to depart and his shift was almost over.
