Personality: Carnivale is a whimsical filly that lives for the flash and glimmer of a festival. From lively music to colorful costumes, she lives for this time of chaos and wonder. There is just something about a festival; from a local harvest festival to a courtly masquerade or massive carnivale. There is excitement in the air, exotic scents and foods, a feeling of comraderie even among strangers. Carnivale has taken it upon herself to live her life as if it were a continuous carnival, strangers she meets just transitory conversation or dance partners. One moment she could pretend to be a fancy lady of a vast herd, the next, an awe-stricken filly of little means. It's all a masquerade play.
She is good natured, but capricious and lives for the moment. She would much rather interact with a world of pretend and glamour than deal with boring daily matters. She doesn't make long term plans or tight bonds that would require some kind of responsibility on her end.
History: Carnivale is the foal of the two unicorns, Arlequin and Xavier. Arlequin views life as one large game for her to play with -- which even includes her own foals. She decided to keep just one for herself and Xavier to raise (after she lied and told him they only had one foal together), and the others she sent off with her familiars to give away as surprise gifts, just to see how the receivers of the baskets would react.
This basket in particular was left near the home range of Xavier's mother - a mountain valley near the water. Mahi, Xavier's father lived in these waters, and in the valley was the herd that she still associates with, led by Sequoyah.
Sequoyah's herd was surprised and a little worried to find this abandoned green basket. But their policy has always been to be the home for those that had none. To accept when others won't, originally made up of cast-offs from Balrog and Stormwild's flight-only herd and those who disagreed with their bigoted views. So Sequoyah and his same-sex partner Xander were happy to adopt a new son or daughter.

Personality: Queen Lumi is a frigid mare, both physically and emotionally. She has very little empathy for other soquili, although she isn't exactly selfish either; she isn't ruled by emotions. Her heart is as frozen as the ice she surrounds herself with. She can be cruel, and generally prefers her own company and the company of creatures of the ice and snow. She thinks that nothing is more beautiful than the glory of winter, the perfection of snowflakes, and the pristine cast that snow and ice brings to the land.
She can be very vain, thinking herself the queen of the snowflakes themselves, and cruel if her self-proclaimed title is challenged. The only emotion that Lumi seems to be able to express (and it is rare at that) is anger. However, Lumi does not see herself as "evil" - in fact, she is more of a perversion of the purity of the unicorns taken to the extreme degree. She sees ice and snow as the purest form of beauty - that can blanket out the ugliness (physical and mental) in the world.
Instead of the pure, magical healing that most unicorn horns grant, Lumi's horn (which appears to be a permanent icicle) can grant others the gift of resilience to the cold if she chooses, or to spread it.
Queen Lumi will never be found in the land in the spring or summer, only when snow and ice blankets the Kawani lands. She fancies herself the Queen of the Snowflakes and has built herself a palace of frozen ice and snow in the highest reaches of the mountains of the North that even the summer sun has not the strength to melt. A few times, other soquili have wandered up to her frozen grounds. She can play a gracious host if she sees something in them that might echo her lonliness and rejection from the world, and she will coddle that, whispering of the ugliness and cruelty of those "others". She will grant them the resistance to the cold, and encourage them to stay and withdraw from the world like herself... trying to make them "beautiful" like her: metaphorically encasing them in her frozen web while slowly physically encrusting them with beautiful frost. The resistance she grants them means it does no damage... however, if (when) she grows tired of them, she gradually reduces their resistance to the cold - usually in such a manner that her guests do not realize until it is too late, and they just need to go lay down for a little bit...
However, the bodies of soquili encased in thick ice hidden deep within her sanctuary seem to attest to a frigid madness within the mare. Devoid of true sympathy, she views them as soquili finally made beautiful- no longer lying or acting in ugly ways. In her mind, this is sometimes the only way to "fix" a soquili (or other being)...
History: No one knows what it was that froze Lumi's heart and caused her to grow distant and cold. Perhaps she was born that way. Some say that her mother abandoned her to the thick snowdrifts when she was but a foal, and only through becoming like the ice and snow herself was she able to survive the winter.

("ta-ra-heep-poos" Name's Origin: Horse-frightening greek phantoms - source of equine fear)

Breed: Mutant, shadowy unicorn ("Tainted unicorn")
Familiar: Haruspex, the female raven.
Haruspex is the daughter of Barghest's Omen and Frostcrowne's Carrion - a creepy, four-eyed raven that examines bites of bodies/carrion/bones to read fortunes. She gives advice to Taraxippus and scouts ahead/does odd jobs for him.
Personality: Taraxippus is very much his father's son: bright of mind and dark of heart. Anju is quite proud of this offspring, achieving what he had hoped to do with his union with Amaterasu. Taraxippus, while loyal to his father, is calculating and sinister and his upbringing has only encouraged such behavior. However, he IS a unicorn, and his mother IS Amaterasu, and as much as Anju would like to pretend it isn't so - there is a heart in there somewhere concealed in his shadows.
Taraxippus has dreams of grandeur, and ultimately isn't above doing what he deems necessary to achieve such goals. He will lie, promise the world, to get what he wants, and cares little for the ultimate misfortunes his actions might have against others. He is relatively detached and unempathetic, seeing those around him as more like pieces in a game than living beings with emotions. Taraxippus is not excessively cruel - as he knows that that can cause more problems than it solves. However, if cruelty is executed properly and in moderation...
He looks down on his "sister", Arcana, and she is the subject of much of his early plotting and manipulation.
Ultimately, Taraxippus wants to be both respected AND feared, more than just the pure terror that Anju seems to crave, irregardless of how others perceive him.
History: Taraxippus is the foal of Anju and Amaterasu. Anju mated with Amaterasu partially as an experiment, and partially due to being taken with the (alien to Anju) notion of procreating - raising offspring of his own. Anju was able to shadow Amaterasu until she foaled and make away with two of the three baskets. This foal is his. The other basket was damaged, and in transferring the foal to an undamaged basket there was a mixup and Arcana is the result of that.

Mate: Taraxippus how now mated with Izusa - he respects her power and true Kalona lineage. She fascinates him and he hopes to use their tenuous bond to strengthen a foothold of influence and power over other, lesser Soquili.

Personality: Seance is half kalona and half tainted shadow-unicorn, and raised in a herd of rather vicious soquili - not exactly a mix that would bring out the best in most soquili. And Seance, for the most part, generally isn't the nicest of soquili, however her grandmother was a pure, gentle unicorn, and some of that blood does show through on Seance from time to time - much like unikalona who express features of both heritages.
This leaves Seance rather bipolar - sometimes even kind - but just as likely to be very much a chip off the block of her father: dangerous and scheming.
History: Seance is the daughter of Taraxippus and Izusa. Taraxippus and Izusa have a tenuous and yet sometimes passionate relationship - at least the closest you could call a relationship between a darkly manipulative tainted unicorn and a pureblood Kalona. They each have a cautious respect of the other - mindful of their words and gestures, and each manipulating the other. However, because of that, they do find a solace in the actions of the other - both delighting in the thrill of the kill, and dark natures. When they bred one night in a thistle-covered copse of trees, Seance was one of the three resulting offspring - and the only one that Taraxippus took with him while she was still in the basket back to his herd.

Personality: Yurei is an intense, creepy mare in every sense of the word. Once a beautiful, kind unicorn, she has been robbed of her horn and it has left her a vindictive shell of what she once was. The purity is gone - her coat, once a shining, pure white is now sickly colored, stained with dirt and grime. Her long, luxurious black mane and tail hang limply, tangled and wet. Beautiful white ribbons have been drug through the mire and dirt, and her gaze is a seething, wicked stare. The unicorn that she once was is dead - the only remnants of the proud creature she was is her cloven hooves and a gaping hole in the center of her forehead. Yurei walks the world caught somewhere between life and death.
A part of her is truly missing - the horn representing the goodness, kindness that once embodied this mare. And now she walks the Kawani lands in search of her missing horn so that she can once more be whole. And in the meantime, all others seem as tainted to her as she is and most are possible outlets for her vengeful anger. Particularly, unicorns are targets of her anger - seeking to take from them what was taken from her, and humans - took it from her. She makes no distinctions between the Kawani people or other settlers to the land - blinded by her rage. She is tireless in her madness, misery, and pain, and truly a blight on the land.
Some Kawani storytellers speak late at night of a sickly-looking mare that shimmers as a spirit and brings death to those foolish enough to approach her.
History: Yurei was a beautiful young unicorn mare that hailed from the far East. She arrived with Ryujin, Tanuki, and a few other soquili in this new world, but shortly after her arrival, something terrible happened to her. Another visitor to the lands - a white settler who had never seen a unicorn before - hunted her and took her horn, leaving her for dead. Perhaps she did die and now roams the land a spirit, or perhaps she lived and wanders broken and mad. But many who encounter her (and live to tell the tale) say that she walks between, a vengeful ghost.

Personality: Neraka, while she can be a bit detached and unomfortable in typical social interactions is a dutiful knight. While she doesn't seem very invested - distant, cold - she follows the rules and tenants of chivalry and knighthood very seriously. She does indeed have a difficulty expressing and feeling emotion, and follows the rules as a way to cling to meaning in her life. She models herself after her father, and is not a cruel mare, although she may not always act appropriately if she needs to deal with something outside of her instruction.
History: Neraka is a devoted daughter of Nightmare and has been raised in his herd. She has not questioned her distant mother. She was raised with the tenants of knighthood, taking the duty to heart.

Familiar: Beebee, a raccooon with a thirst for speed, who took a shine to Velocity, and makes himself useful with his opposing thumbs and talent for drawing in exchange for super fast rides.
Personality:Velocity was raised by parents and siblings that valued speed, pushing themselves to run faster. Like his siblings Fleethoof, and elder siblings, he was named after this idea.
Velocity was the only one of his breeding that didn't get wings, and this drove him to just push himself harder and longer, past the point of exhaustion. He's not as fast as most of his siblings (growing up thinking he was slow - but speed in his family was a long meterstick). So he worked on his endurance the most.
He keep his mane trimmed relatively short and has an almost perpetual windblown look to it. But as he raced, pushing himself, he discovered how much he loves travel. He loves long-distance travel, seeing the world, feeling the wind in his mane and exploring the wide world around him. He's a little jealous of those of his family that have wings and what that must grant them as far as viewpoints of the world around them, but he's positive, and knows that all of his family are blessed. He's overall gentle, curious, but not humble. He does have a boisterous sense of humor, and is eager to meet other soquili.
He's proud of his unique scaling around his feet and forehead, that shine in the sun. Having learned some of the stories of the exotic Kirin, Velocity has embraced some of this either distant heritage or strange blessing from the spirits, to the point of appropriating a some of their stories and trappings (such as an Eastern necklace), despite his local roots.
History:
Alcyon is the guy who got the girl. He stuck around and helped raise Swiftmane's kids form another stallion, out of love. It took her forEVER to come around to him, then she realized what she had all along. <33 But not before blindly trying to find the old fling she thought she still loved. They are quite a lovey dovey couple now. Alcyon got his happy ending, and so did she.
Velocity Has a trio of older siblings. Swiftwing is all about speed, like his mom. But he is all about flight for speed. Swiftmane is a runner. So is Quicken. Swiftmane also has an other daughter Kaycie. Kaycie and Quicken have a different biological brother, but consider Alcyon their dad.

Familiar: Kokoa (means "love of the heart"), the raccoon (the daughter of Tama the red panda, that came over with Kino on the trip from Japan).
Personality: Kino is an austere, benevolent creature typical of his race. He hails from the lands far to the East, and was among those who ventured forth to the Kawani lands to know the worlds beyond the rising sun.
Despite the strange lands and different values, he adheres strictly to his code of honor. He wears a few trappings of his homeland to remind him of the beauties of his homeland and the principles by which he abides by.
He is closely attuned to the element of wood. He is self-confident and adheres to the strict moral standards of his code of honor. He is a thoughtful creature, relying on logic, but takes the well-being and needs of others into careful consideration. However, he can overburden himself with tasks.
His favorite food is sweet plums.
History: Kino, in his homeland of Japan, was considered a sacred creature. He made his home in the lush, misty forests in the mountains, his coat blending in with the wood of the trees. However, he considered himself a protector and an advisor to those who sought his council. More so than many of his eliusive kind, he would appear to two-leggers when he was needed. He was seen as a symbol of the vitality of growing things, and for his sound council.
His strong affinity to the element of wood shaped his personality and his goals as well. When new lands were discovered to the far east, he found his calling to visit them - being affilited with the direction of East.

Personality: Yurin is a delicate, reserved but astute beauty. She is unerringly truthful and careful with her mannerisms. She is a representation of the virtues and representations that the Chinese have of the stone Jade. She is was even named for it when her jade-colored scales were first seen by her mother.
"The wise have likened jade to virtue. For them, its polish and brilliancy represent the whole of purity; its perfect compactness and extreme hardness represent the sureness of intelligence; its angles, which do not cut, although they seem sharp, represent justice; the pure and prolonged sound, which it gives forth when one strikes it, represents music. Its color represents loyalty; its interior flaws, always showing themselves through the transparency, call to mind sincerity; its iridescent brightness represents heaven; its admirable substance, born of mountain and of water, represents the earth. History: Yurin was born to the lap of wealth and luxury far to the East. The two-legs in China viewed her as a sacred creature. However, despite her idyllic life, she never took her easy life for granted. She was always diligent and obedient to her parents and superiors (though there were few).
She has traveled with the nobility, and has now found herself in a far away land.
