I am sure Hirano did use some of Bram Stoker's Dracula" as well as the novel, but I hope more from the novel. I'm not the biggest fan of the movie because of it's sudden changes from the book... Mina never loved Dracula!!!

umm, btw, i just noticed, i don't know whether it was simply for comedic effect or not, but apparently Hellsing's vampires DO have reflections, or maybe it's just seras because she's still mostly human?

or maybe it's just because they thought it was funny to confuse the fans. stare

ah well...

Explanation!

In the days that the 'mirror myths' started, most mirrors were backed with silver. Hence, a vampire would be unable to see his/her reflection in one. Nowadays, it's cheaper to back them with a silver colored foil or some such thing. Now, -expensive- mirrors are still backed with silver, but I highly doubt Seras' handy-dandy hand mirror would be anything other than a cheapy.

SO! If Seras looked into a GOOD mirror, there would be no reflection. In any other case, though, she should be able to see herself just fine.

i always thought is was some sort of thing with the old belief that mirrors refelcted the soul, but the silver theory makes sense.

I agree with Michi's two theories:

1. The animators got skimpy so they could have their little comedy moment.

2. Seras isn't a full vampire, allowing her to see her reflection (for this short time maybe, since she was newly turned).

I've never been particularly fond of the whole "there's silver in the mirrors" theory.

I believe that Seras still casts a reflection because she's only half-vampire. I also believe that that's why she still has blue eyes.

Now, taking off from the blue eyes thing...

I've noticed that none of Millenniums freaks seem to have red eyes, Does this have to do simply with the fact that they aren't true vampires?

Possibly. Jan has yellow eyes, Luke has green, Rip has blue, and Zorin has purple. Then again, we're not entirely sue that full-vampires have to have red eyes. We'll find out when Seras becomes a full-vampire. If her blue eyes become red (like I think they will), then perhaps they do.

Honestly, I view pre-Pip Seras as half Vampire, more of a Dhampir, if you will, as she refuses to partake the blood offered to her, besides that of Integral.

I'm hoping she'll have the full Red eyes, as I can't picture the Awakened Seras without them

On the subject of mirrors - funny thing is, Bram Stoker made that up. Before that point, Vampires could be seen in Mirrors - It's GHOSTS that can't.

One can attribute mirror sight down to either will of a Vampire to be seen, a vampire's ability to see itself, or the fact that Seras was only recently turned and not actually a TRUE vampire yet. (She becomes a true vampire at times when her eyes turn red) referenced in ultimate 1 and 2, when she uses her ability to see long distances and tp tear through the reanimated Hellsing soldiers.

That's true Jan, I had almost forgotten about that. Oh well, it's just like Sunlight, it had little effect on Vampires until "Nosferatu" was released

Not entirely. Nosferatu introduced the idea of sunlight being able to do real harm to Vampires, however some previous legends, including Dracula, stated that sunlight WEAKENS Vampires.
Bram Stoker's standpoint was that it removed all of their special powers from them and made them unable to cross running water. It is for these reasons that Dracula was mostly out at night - He could go out in daylight, but he had no speed, strength, sight, regenerative ability, or transformation.

Well, when I refer to an effect dealing with sunlight, I was referring to the fatality of it, drawing reference to Nosferatu

You're entirely correct, I just can't think of the right word to describe the Dracula/Alucard spelling. I'll fix the fact in time.

Speaking of facts, I've read through to this point and have added a couple more to the list. Thanks to Elindarhya and NoLifeKing.

As for mirrors and silver, the same debate could be taken to digital vs film based cameras. 24mm film uses silver inside the camera, digital cameras don't. Would a vampire thus show up via a digital camera?

An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearraging the letters of another word or phrase. Therefore, Alucard is an anagram of Dracula. More specifically, it is an inversion (a reversal). I still think you shoud include Bram Stoker's Dracula (the film) as a major source of inspiration for Hirano (because there are still many people who don't know that) and make it clear that Alucard is Dracula and Vlad the Imapler (because the two are not necessarily one and the same). You could also mention that the Major, the Doctor, and the Captain have no real names that we know of.

I'm not sure about the digital camera thing (although if the "silver theory" is true, I don't see why it wouldn't work), but it makes me wonder if we should post the known tenants of Hellsing vampire lore.
