Akuji didn't let it bother him that Thalassa always felt safe ("If you always feel safe then you're never on guard... and if you're never on guard you might be hurt!" he felt like exclaiming, but he resisted easily), but instead focused on her admirable and beautiful nature. She was so trusting and, well, innocent, that she would have an overwhelming amount of faith in people.
Although it concerned Akuji for her safety a little bit, he was glad she was such a numa.
"Well, if I'm here then I can protect you from the dark," he said bravely, a little more forward than his usual statements. He blushed slightly and smiled. "We may want to get those carrots before it gets dark," Akuji noted, glancing at the orange-red sunset that began to embrace the land. "Will you help me?" he asked, knowing very well he was capable of doing it by himself... but maybe he wanted some company. Maybe it made him happiest that way.

Thalassa, as usually, didn’t have a clue that the idea of being trusting of others would worry somone at all so she just smiled at hime and waited to see what he had to say next. Well, she didn’t just wait. The basket was behind her on the counter and she flit over to pick it up and to show him where they’d be heading to get the carrots.
Her human left them in an enclosed garden thing with special dirt that she had bought. Apparently Numa-dirt was just too sugary?
Her blush matched her own, then in her own manner she just accepted it and gave him a smile, “Yeah! That way I’ll drop off to sleep without any worry.” Sometimes she turned on a little lamp in her room if something had her feeling worried. The light was cheery and made her drop off quite happily. “Well.. Of course I’ll help! I wouldn’t just send you out there to work, we’ll have fun and get it done quicker together.” Letting her wings do their usual flapping Thal pointed to the backdoor, “It’s just out there, c’mon!” Flying forward and opening the door, she left it open without a care and looped in the air a bit, enjoying the flying on the way to the garden.

Akuji wuickly munched down t he last ear of his cinnamon gummy bear and followed Thalassa out the door. He was a little happy that the sun was going to set soon--he wouldn't be able to see his odd discolorations then. The coffee numa was somewhat overwhelmed that he was still here, with her. She made him irrefutibly happy, and such a thing was not easily overlooked by such a generally sad Numa.
He smiled happily to himself, his paws at his hips as he prepared to pull the carrots out from the ground. It would not take too long from the looks of it.
"Alright, ready?" He asked. "I'll race you. Whoever picks the most before there are no more left wins, okay?" Akuji smiled widely.

Thalassa landed on the ground about as gracefully as she ever did and smiled widely at Akuji. If he wanted to have a race with the carrots she’d have to use her wings to their best ability because her arms certainly never seemed strong enough. Her little tail and rump wiggled back and forth as she took a deep, deep breath and said, “Go!” As soon as she said it her wings began to flit furiously making Thal feel like they were humming.
Plunk! The hard movements of her wings seemed to be helping, but did she have enough stamina for this to get all of the carrots to fill the basket up?
Wrapping her paws around another carrot, Thalassa flit her wings hard again, plunking another out with an OOMPH! And having to pause to push fluffy hair out of her face.

(;__; Gaia ate my post. This one aint as good but you know how you can’t really recreate writing well D: )
Once Thal yelled ”Go”, a strange excitement was ignited within him. He hesitated at first, but once he saw Thalassa picking up carrots as fast as her feet would take her, he began to pick them as well. How odd, competition was. It was a form of bonding, although they were pitted against one another, yet it all seemed very friendly. To be honest, Akuji was far too excited. The first carrot he plucked nearly broke in half. Hoever, he had no time to think of that! Thalassa was winning, although she struggled much more than Akuji did in terms of picking out the carrots.
He quickly got a hang of it and started picking them out like weeds. One, two, three, four, five… he was getting faster and faster, and as Thalssa and he were nearing the end of the carrots. There were only a few left, and he noticed that Thalassa only had a few less than him. Maybe he should…
“Gyah!” He cried, tripping upon a little root and falling.

Unfortunately, Thal wasn’t very good at being overly competitive. Sure, she was having fun right now and trying her hardest to get the most carrots, although they hadn’t really said what the prize was for getting the most had she? Right now her brain was a flutter from the effort that came into trying to pull the carrots up. Strange that she wasn’t that much smaller than her human not quite four feet tall and yet.. Getting them out of the ground was no easy task. Huffing and puffing she continued to pull at them, glancing at Akuji every once in awhile and blushing a bit. If he decided to leave her she’d probably cry.
Leave her? Now where had that come from?
The sudden movement of him tripping and falling startled Thal enough for her to hurl a carrot back behind her and she was almost instantly fluttering over him, “Akuji! Are you okay? I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.. I shouldn’t have asked you. Are you hurt? I mean.” Her words weren’t exactly smooth and worry was obvious.
Great going.. Compete with a friend then have him get hurt… ;o;

“I-I’m fine!” Akuji exclaimed, quickly getting up from the dirt in attempt to save himself from the embarrassment. ‘I’m the one who’s supposed to be the strong one and I trip and fall… Oh, Akuji, she probably thinks you’re a los—‘. As Akuji stood up in all his fervor he collided with fluttering Thal’s jaw. Bang!
Akuji fell on his butt again, rubbing the top of his head painfully. “A-ah, Thalassa!” The terribly discolored Coffee sat up again despite his pain, blushing terribly, with the utmost concern of his new candy friend. “Did I hurt you? I’m so sorry! Did my horns scratch you? I-I didn’t mean to… Do you want some ice?”
He could’ve died from embarrassment. First he trips and falls in a stupid attempt to impress her, and then he hits her! This couldn’t get any worse. The idea of Thalassa throwing him out in an angry rage while she clenched her jaw was just too painful for him to bear. It was all going so wrong!

Tears welled up in the pale Numas eyes before she even had a chance to feel the pain. Eyes widening and blinking in attempt to make it stop, she plopped down on the ground beside him and sniffled just a little bit. Would he be mad at her if the tears wouldn't stop? Honest it didn't hurt that much, it was just a reaction that a wimp like her had to most any jostling or ... anything.
She ran a tentative paw along where he had bumped her, there wasn't a cut or anything... Probably just both of their hard heads smacking made it feel so much more worse than possible. "N-no, no! I'm not scratched at-al-all." Breathing deeply she began to relax just a bit... then heard his next words and tensed.
Nodding Thal dusted herself off and gave him another smile, "We could carry th-these inside and get some ice?" Swirly was probably going to have a fit when she got home. A big mess in the garden and what felt like a rather large lump on her face... but she had a friend! Hopefully he wouldn't want to just up and leave.
