Had he seen? She always did her best to hide how she felt and to stop people from worrying but there were times when she failed miserably. This was usually when she was anxious about nightfall and because more often than not a stallion would see it and of course he would use this to his advantage. Through her mother's warped teachings she had grown accustomed to it and accepted it but that didn't make it any less bearable.

...Oh, she didn't mind the company of a stallion but she really, genuinely hated the dark! It absolutely terrified her and it stemmed from something that happened when she was a babe - she could still remember it to this day and she still had nightmares about it. Her only saviour in all these nightmares was her spirit bear and yet he wasn't there to cuddle her at night.

"Mmm, nothing!" She offered a small smile, choosing to push the thoughts to the side. He didn't need to get involved, it wasn't his problem and she was sure her otter was hiding somewhere anyway. "Unless you meant in there..." she trained her gaze towards the forest and then gave a slight shrug.

"In which case I don't know."

He thought it was best not to call her a liar to her face...

Yeah, that was the better choice. He was just good at telling when one lied. His father had made him an expert...sometimes he regretted it others he didn't. It seemed to decide who he could trust and who he couldn't, it had come in handy for a few soquili he had previously met.

He wanted to trust her but this threw him off. It wasn't his buisness. He wouldn't get into it, he didn't know her that well.

He had his own ideas..."The forrest?"

Sometimes it took a little trust from both parties before true understanding could be achieved. While Sparkles often gave off the illusion of trusting everyone this was not the case and more often than not she was more inclined to remain hidden behind a very ornate and decorative wall. This little wall gave her comfort and as was to be expected, stopped people from making fun of her more than they already did!

Nevertheless, the manner in which his expression changed indicated that he wasn't thrilled by her response. Rather, he seemed unimpressed and that was a little off putting - she didn't mean to be this way but it worked out better for her in the long term (sort of). In her own defence, he really didn't know her that well and he seemed completely unprepared to return the favour so...why should she let out her deepest secrets?

"Mmm, the crackling," she pushed the thoughts to one side as he brought up the forest and gave a shrug, "I thought you wanted to know what it was but I have no idea!"

"I don't know, don't care...really."

He had always imagined the sight of Gaicenta coming back to haunt him in this state. In a compassionate, caring state. He would be so weak...he would fall. And surely die for ignoring her teachings that she had taught him to survive. She had saved his life that day, she had murdered to save him. He couldn't repay her, except to obey her. He owed her.

Forever.

His deep, dark secret hidden. Played in his mind like a movie set to repeat. Rewinding every time...and starting over. It made sweat bead at his brow. It made him in a feared state.

"If it was something, we wouldn't be in danger."

Morbid thought, he wondered if he could be merciless around her. Kill something of valued life. It perked him in curiousity but he shoved it in the back of his mind. That was her speaking.

So he hadn't been asking about the forest? It seemed that she had entirely missed his question, or rather she hadn't but the answer she had given was unsatisfactory. Unfortunately, it appeared that the conversation had declined in quality though and with each thing she said he got substantially more grumpy. Maybe it was her imagination but he was being a little more gruff...especially since she had denied that there was anything wrong.

He didn't need to worry, it wasn't as though he could fix it!

"No guarantee of that," she pointed out softly, though the small smile on her lips indicated that she wasn't being malicious. There were always creatures in the world that surpassed an individual...If one happened to be hiding in those woods then there was no guarantee he would be able to help her. Besides, why would one so gruff stand up for her?

...It seemed a little out of sorts, she struggled to picture it.

"But alas, there is no telling until we drift back inside I suppose..." Which was something she would have to do shortly, given that it was significantly warmer in there during the night. Urgh, night time, she'd better relocate her companion while she was at it.

"If you were an otter where would you put yourself?" she enquired vaguely.

What seemed out of sorts was Ares going to help a stranded foal, when he had told her to go home, from a rabid wolf pack and almost losing his wing. That scar remained still even with the help of herbs. He remembered the filly well.

What others didn't realize was that the cold hearted Ares actually did have a heart and a rather big one at that...even if he doesn't care to show or admit it.

Night was aproaching, she was correct they would be traveling back inside them. But he didn't mind, he preferred the forrest to open plains sometimes. Though he couldn't spread his wings, he didn't feel as secluded.

"If I were an otter where would I put myself?" he questioned, as she went completely if not entirely of track. "What do you mean?"

"Ah well..." Sparkles offered a sheepish smile as he repeated her question and considered whether or not it was a good idea to inform him of why she needed her fluffy otter. In truth, she didn't like to confess this little weakness as it brought back rather unpleasant memories but maybe if she told him he might help her look. After all, two sets of eyes were better than one even if her companion was pink like her!

"You see, I um..." she cleared her throat and glanced briefly at the shadows of the forest before shaking her head slowly, "I don't really like the dark, so my friend always keeps me company at night," she grinned a little, perhaps in an attempt to prepare herself for any laughter that may follow. She had been teased as a little filly about it but then again those foals hadn't experienced and seen what she had that night so they wouldn't understand.

"We do our own thing during the day but we're always together at night!" Still smiling she wagged her lion like tail thoughtfully and glanced towards the plains as though that might be where he had ended up. As far as she was aware he had run down that way this morning - perhaps to bathe in the lake as opposed to the river.

"But you see, he's an otter which is why I asked where I might put myself if I were one..."

"I see," there are many reasons to fear the dark for not knowing what lurked in it. What creature lay in its dark mist. His cool eyes watched her, "I am not an otter, and I'd probably be near water if I were...which we already are." he implied.

"I can help you search for your otter friend," he replied. "Though if you don't find him, I could keep you company during the night...so you aren't in fear?" he hoped he had worded that right his accent thickened as he didn't know what to say. He found his face getting hot to. He ignored it though. If he didn't think it was there it wasn't. Truth be told he hadn't ever been with anyone this long...let alone a sleep over. Yet he offered it anyways, plus she'd be safer with him in the middle of the forrest than an otter.

[[Sorry sorry, I haven't been well!]]

"I could keep you company during the night...so you aren't in fear?"

It was both a phrase she did and didn't want to hear for a number of rather complicated reasons. In a way this instilled fear in to her as well but not on the same level as the dark did. In a way it was like weighing the pair of fears on a giant scale with the winning one being the lesser of two evils. Not the most flattering of concepts for the male by any means but she had her reasons.

After all...stallions always wanted something in return for their company right?

Well, she looked at Ares for quite a while...pale eyes assessing him in an almost calculative manner before she shook her head. He was a very attractive stallion, so she supposed she could always steel herself provided she kept that in mind.

"I guess I wouldn't say no to some help," she agreed after a few moments, choosing to leave those thoughts alone for the time being.

His ears flickered, she was processing him it seemed and he hadn't an idea why. He tilted his head slightly to let her know he was in a slight state of confussion but he left it at that.

He nodded, "Where would your otter more inclined to be? If he was not at a water source?" he asked curiously, almost portraying a detective tone. He thought if he stayed the night with her, it would make him more binded to her than already be. He considered her a friend, he did enjoy her company. Something he couldn't say for most, but what if he liked her company a little to much and started to yearn for it like those lovesick stallions. He shuddered at the thought, he didn't want to be like that. But wa there anything really wrong with that? He let the thoughts drift in and out of his head making no notion to any of them.

Ah, that look was just a little foreign to her and she could barely afford a smile in return. Under no circumstances was she prepared to divulge any tidbit of information just yet - particularly when males were so very good at 'acting' oblivious when they knew exactly what was wrong. Unsure of exactly who he was, she was more inclined to remain defensive in that regard.

...It wasn't as though he let her know anything about him, so how could she be sure?

Nevertheless it wasn't long before she dismissed it (he would surely forget) and instead she turned her attention towards his question which was indeed a good one. It was one she had already asked given her otter was about as unpredictable as she was but there at least a few places that had the chance of providing results.

"Hrm, if I was my friend I would say...that he would be hiding the lakes but they are very far south," she mused softly.
PostPosted: Wed Oct 17, 2007 11:52 am

His ears flickered, well they could start head to the south though it would take till this time tomorrow to get there. Unless he flew, but he wouldn't want to leave her there by herself. His cool eyes pondered at the situation. "So what do you wish to do Sparks? It's your call..." they were pretty much in the middle of no where near the forrest. So it was all conveniant...no hint of sarcasm.

He knew of caves a mild walk from here in which he would stay even if she departed there wasn't anyway he would get close to home. He was wiped, if he flew he would litterally crash and burn. It just wasn't a fabulous setting night time. The caves he spoke of, weren't the cleanest however. They had been overun by all sorts of nasty little creatures but it was sheltar and thats all that mattered.

If there was on thing Sparkles always did, it was to make sure that she never slept in enclosed spaces. The mere thought of sleeping in a cave would have sent her into panic mode and thus she would politely decline such an offer. Well, she would try in the sense that declining someone without saying you had declined an offer was a little difficult - he wasn't exactly a mind reader.

Ah yes, her method was to pretend she hadn't heard that offer!

Nevertheless, as the male pondered the current situation Sparkles was in the process of pondering her own solutions to the problem. None of them were particularly logical and everyone would know they lacked sense when she decided that the most appropriate thing to do would be...

"I say, I start walking and hope for the best," she chirped in her usual merry tone though her expression was strained by the thought. It wasn't that she didn't like Ares but he was so aloof and so difficult to read that she had no idea of what his idea of 'repayment' would have been and that frightened her just a little.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 22, 2007 5:10 pm

He watched her, his mind back tracking to see if he could remember what that little otter looked like. He thought he had seen it before but maybe he hadn't. Though trying to go back through closed doors to find information often led to migraines.

Therefore he would attempt to put it back and just go off the scent of an otter for they all had an alike, distinct scent. Then when mentioning it, she could perhaps identify it was her little friend or not.

He shuffled his wings in slight agitation, but he nodded in agreement. "Walk and hope for the best." he repeated. He led the way slightly, waiting for her to follow him or perhaps company him at his side. Who knew? To him she was unpredictable, all females were. Thats why they didn't get along as much. More than males, because the males seemed to be egotistical man whores, love sick or depressed upon the world. In his opinion...

Ah if only she could read his mind, she would declare him overly critical of his own gender and correct him. She might have been somewhat warped in her opinions and views but she had met many good stallions, they hadn't been either impressionable, self centred or depressed. In truth, for the most part they had been rather unassuming and when asked a question, would responding accordingly.

She could ask for nothing more, to be frank.

Nevertheless, she heeded his words and followed after him in a somewhat obedient stupor. Movements slow and controlled enough to ensure she remained unharmed (but still stiff). It was difficult to move in the cold, or so she had found...the muscles tensed beyond comfort and more often than not all she wanted to do was huddle up in some warm undergrowth and wait for the discomfort to pass. Unfortunately, she was not granted permission to do so at this current moment in time given that her teddy bear was missing.

"He's bright pink if that helps, with little white spots on his fur," she murmured, maintaining just a little distance between the stallion who had opted to help her instead of forcing himself upon her (which was most bizzare), "A little like my rump!" It was the best way to describe him as his markings did match hers quite well.
