She lay there for a while then finally closed the door and piled stuff in front of it, then threw open the curtains and lay back down on the bed, where she will lay unless interrupted till daybreak.

Maria frowned, "Don't worry too much dear. Everything will be ok. I'm sure."

Skunk lay on the bed, somewhere that was neither asleep nor awake. She wasn't really aware of much even, until the rising sun started lighting her room through the open curtains. The light crept slowly, but roused her. She shook her head, trying to think, getting up so she could pace as she did. She didn't know what was what anymore. She wanted to trust him, wanted to trust Maria too but... he could become human at any time. He was already stronger then her, and without her weapons she would have no way to defend herself if he did decide to go after her... She wanted to trust him, she did, but... She made a small scream of frustration. She felt so powerless without her weapons. If only.... She blinked then looked out the window. He had to be asleep now, that's what he said, wasn't it? Okay then, they all probably kept his schedule more or less, and anyway, he was probably the only one who knew when she took off last time. Fine, she'd slip out, get into her room at her Aunt's place, liberate some of her stuff, and some cash, stash the important stuff in case she had to make a REAL run for it later, then use the money to buy some more weapons. She just needed a way to not feel so.... helpless... It would be easier to trust him, so long as she knew that when he did betray that trust, she could defend herself. Or if he was more like Leelee, that when he broke that trust by throwing himself into harms' way like an idiot, she could defend him. Either way she anted her weapons back. She wasn't even aware of how much of a security blanket a few knives had become, but she knew that she wanted them back. She mouthed a silent apology to Maria, looked up at the lightning sky, and slipped out.

To a point things went... somewhat according to plan. She made it to her aunt's house without a problem. Though hauling her stuff out the window had taken a few trips. And it took nearly an hour to find enough cash to be worth anything. She gathered her stuff as best she could for ease of carrying and staggered along into the woods. She found what she was looking for, though it took her hours, a natural leanto of rocks up on a hill. Not likely to flood, and also not easily found by accident. She scowled at a fresh cut on her hand from a briar. Very much not easily found. She stashed her belongings, using a blanket she had carried them in and leaves to hide them further. An uprooted nettle bush was perfect for placing in front, though her hands were the worse for it after.

Finally done she looked at the sky and estimated it to be well past noon. She swore and headed into town. Town was a good walk from her aunt's place, and worse when she had gone so deep into the woods beyond. By the time she got there, the scent of food made her realize that she was starving. She walked the drive through, and ignoring the dirty looks she got, bought herself a small feast off the "healthy choice" menu of the dive. She sat on a park bench to eat, ignoring further dirty looks. Especially the ones she got for feeding her croutons to the pigeons and squirls.

Finally full, she dumped the containers into the trash, loved on the two stray dogs and the mangy cat that had settled around her, then headed for the bad part of town. She hated the bad part of town. It didn't matter that it was states away from where she had been attacked the first time, it just brought up too many bad memories. Unfortunately, no one in the good part of town would sell spring loaded daggers to an underage girl. She shuddered and gave the world her fiercest glare, hating that she was armed only with two kitchen knives. Like an idiot she stopped dead when she remembered that those two knives were still on the bed back at his house. She took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and walked like she was still armed.

She got about halfway to the shop she had scouted when she first moved in with her aunt, before this whole mess, when two boys stepped into her path. She backed up a step then glared at them. They were armed, clearly so. She... was not. Worse yet, she knew them. She spat on the ground.
"What do you buffoons want?" she asked, same as she would if she had her blades.

"Payback," one of them growled.

"You put Jim in the hospital, now you're going to share his room!" the other hissed.

She crossed her arms, hands slipping into her sleeves, just as if she was armed. Her habit was to give them one warning, then go for the ones in her waistband as she turned her back, but that wasn't here. This kind of an area, you never turned your back, not even to give a warning. So she just narrowed her eyes, made fists of her hands, as though she were gripping hilts. The growing shadows as the day ended seemed even more menacing then usual. She refused to let a drop of her fear show. She focused instead on irritation. If that idiot clerk hadn't busted her for 'lifting, she'd still have her weapons, she wouldn't even be here. She let herself hate that idiot clerk, let it be all his fault, because anger here was an ally, fear was a weakness that got you killed. It didn't help that she knew she was walking around with a couple hundred dollars. Knives weren't cheap, after all.

She stuck up her chin. "So, when three of you couldn't take me before... two of you are now?" she taunted, trying to remind them that they had reason to fear her, even going so far as to nod to the bandage on the cheek of one of them. She was still miffed at herself or missing his leering eye.

"No, not two," the first jeered, which is when she realized that she should have turned. Arms grabbed her from behind and pulled. She didn't scream. Screaming didn't help, not here. No on came. Instead she saved her air to fight. She slammed her foot down on the instep of one attacker, and pulled her elbow back sharply into the other. She heard them both grunt and got a glance behind. Two of them, bigger and older then her, but seemed to be unarmed. Knives on the two in front, but held sloppily... if she could just get one of them... But no matter how she thrashed, the two behind her were too strong. The pulled her into an alleyway and pulled her arms spread. The two punks from school followed, grinning evil little grins. One of them couldn't seem to wait and before she knew it, metal bit her face. Her eyes widened as blood dripped from the gash that now went from just under one eye to her chin. Was this what it felt like when she cut some one? IT HURT! She screamed an obscenity, which just seemed to egg the other on as his knife slashed into her chest. A slice, not a stab, and thanks to her clothes, the wound was shallow, but the scream that came out of her was involuntary, verbal, and mental as the sun set.

Eric's eyes sprang open under the ground, bursting through the earth and into the air. He burst through the levels of the house in a blurr. Storm clouds billowed in overhead, meeting in clashes of thunder and lightning. He was more beast than man now, eyes cold and black as the night itself. There was no mercy there, no love, not even a hint of kindness as he brushed past objects and people to get to her. As he reached the entrance to the ally she was at the rain started to pour down. His black shirt clung to his skin, showing every rippling muscle that was underneath. Power clung to him as if it were his own skin, and his hair was plastered to his face and neck. A fire burned in his eyes as he approached the boys. "You have one chance. Leave now, or I will dispatch you to the ends of the earth myself." A cold, merciless grin came across his features as he inched closer and a low growl came from deep within him, menacing and dark.

By that point she was further slashed up, one leg was pulped, from being stabbed, then kicked several times. Her s**t, and her chest under it, was sliced several times and a gash over one eye bled into it. The boys had been taunting her, and stopped mid word when he appeared, staring wide eyed at him. "Who are you?" One of the older boys growled, trying to sound menacing, trying, and failing.

Her eyes were widened as she stared at him past the blood and the rain. Part of her filled with hope, while the other part of her stood ready for his words, ready for him to say that it wasn't her that he had meant to save.

"You do not need to know my name. You may call me the destroyer, the avenger, whatever it is you need to. But all that you need to know is this: Should you take another step toward that girl you will find yourself in more pain that anything you could have ever imagined." Lightning flashed behind him, making him a silhouette against the background.

"H...hey!" one of the knife wielders said. "She owes us... this ain't your business man! She put our boy in the hospital, cut him up! The $%^$@@$ deserves it!"

"you... idiot...." she whispered, gasping through the pain. Hard to tell who she was talking to.

Within the blink of an eye he was behind the boy, holding him up buy the collar of his shirt. "I do not care about your boy. You have messed with the wrong girl." He focused on the knife in the boy's hand, making it turn of it's own volition to make a slice in his chest to match the one he had given Skunk.

The kid screamed. The two holding her arms dropped her to rush to his defense. As she fell she grabbed one around the legs, making him fall face first into the wall.

Eric dropped the screaming boy and spun around to catch the one rushing him around the neck. He smiled, showing his long fangs in a merciless grin. He threw the ignorant boy down the ally about thirty feet and right into the side of a dumpster. "Now, you will leave or I will continue to place you all in the trash where you belong." He moved in front of Skunk, kicking the boy next to her out of his way.

The boys turned and fled, stumbling here and there when they had to.

Skunk rolled herself onto her back, muck and dirt from the ally getting into her wounds, but covering her more then the ragged remains of her shirt did. She looked up at him, braced or him to tell her he regretted saving her, to yell at her, to anything. And some how she knew the words would hurt more then the knives did.

The cold darkness left his eyes when he turned to look at her. Gingerly he bent to pick her up, holding her closely. "Hang on, Little One. We will be home and you will be healed in no time."

She stared up at him and swallowed hard, shaking like a leaf. "you.... you saved me..." she whispered.

"Of course I did. I promised to keep you safe, healthy, and happy. All those under my care have nothing to fear. And I could not let you die. You have become an important part of my life, my dear. Now save your strength and close your eyes. We will be moving very quickly until we enter the mansion, and I would not wish for you to become ill over the movements"

"All be cause of..." the words died as her mind clicked pieces together. But... it wasn't possible. She had seen them both at the same time. But some how... she could almost believe.... "You... aren't... are you?" she whispered, eyes wide as she stared at him.
