Well she thought to herself, she might as well get this over and done with. The sooner she faced it, the sooner she could get over it (somewhat, this week had just been terrible for promises).
"Okay," she murmured, "I'll see you later."
And she was going to make sure of that, Lin added mentally as she entered the hallway excepting Aragost to be there.

In the darkness, Aragost was just coming around the corner of the hallway, his cowl up and hiding his already invisible features. The darkness of the hallway was deep, but his figure was still darker, as if he were taking in and hiding any vestiges of light that might have given away his presence.
Yet his eyes were as sharp as ever, and he could see Lin clearly, despite the blackness of the corridor. Or perhaps he was seeing her only with his mind, as he had come to do so often during his life.
But for the first time, he did not acknowledge her presence right away. Instead, he stopped in the darkness, staring at her, motionless, silent, waiting ...

She could feel him, even though she didn't see him, or maybe it was the feeling of being stared at. It wasn't so bad.. not like the first time she met him, or the time he was really angry at Sir Valdemar and Elros. It made her skin prickle though, she turned to one side, where she knew he would be coming down and therefore assumed she was being stared at.
"Aragost," she murmured.
His hearing like all elves she didn't need to call out, and she knew that after all this time.

Aragost continued to stare at Lin. He had known for a while that she would be coming, and what had happened, and what she was going to say ... but he had still not decided what he would tell her, or how he would respond.
He brushed past her and opened his door, heading into his room. It was just as dark in there as in the hallway, since his shutters were closed, but he left the door open for Lin to come in behind him and opened the shutters, letting in the late morning sunlight.

She slipped in, she wondered how much he knew, and was grateful that if he knew anything he didn't say. She closed the door behind her and blinked see the light now cast upon his room.
A room that still didn't have much except for a quilt, which was the best splash of colour in the room.
"Aragost," Lin repeated softly, "Sir Valdemar is coming here, to Haven to ask you about the creature."
He probably knew what she was talking about, but there was very little he did not know.
"I'm... sorry, when I was in the Southland, when I gave my message about it from Elros to Sir Valdemar and then to the Queen. We had to tell her about you, it's only between her and her husband. No one else, but... well she had to know because otherwise she wouldn't understand why Sir Valdemar felt you were the person to talk to..."

Aragost turned, his back to the window, his face entirely hidden by shadows, and stared at Lin. For several moments he said nothing, and when he did speak his voice was low and quiet, almost as it had been when he had first come to the ranch.
"The aetheling knows as well," he told her quietly. "And Valdemar will not be coming alone."
He sighed then, and moved to lean against the wall. "I am old, Lin," he said in a stretched sort of voice. "And of late I have been feeling it more than ever ..."
But she didn't need to concern herself with such matters as that. He shook his head mentally to get himself back on track.
"There is so much," he murmured softly, "so much left to do ... and so ... so little time ..."

Tinuviel, Lin winced at the thought, well it was only fair, she was family but still. She didn't think anyone would let her come out to as far as the Borderlands, when she and Earendil had suggested she travel, she had thought only to the Southland cities.
Though she was more surprised to hear his comment about him being old. Elves got old yes, but not old physically, she iddn't think it was possible for an elf to feel his age.
"You'll have to leave?"
Well that was a given, but she had an awful feeling he won't come back. Not just come back, the way he talked had a tone of finality to it.

Aragost looked down at Lin, and suddenly it struck him just how small she really was. He had always known it as a fact, but for some reason, the fact that she was barely half his height suddenly seemed important for some reason.
He closed his eyes and lowered his head. "It is that," he said quietly, "or the creature will come here, and then this place would cease to exist. I cannot let that happen ..."

She had hoped that Sir Valdemar hadn't been correct about that, but she knew deep down he was right and nothing was going to change that fact. Things were changing, people were leaving and she didn't like that, even though she told herself it was foolish. Change happened and it was for the better.
"Will you come back?" she couldn't help but ask.
She remembered the first time there had been that fear that Aragost would leave, when she looked back on it, she couldn't quite figure out why. This was before she got to know Aragost somewhat well. Perhaps it was because, despite his attempts to keep a distance, he had affected them.

Now that was a question to which there was no easy answer. Would he return? There was a possibility that he might survive, but would one really call that survival? The creature could only have grown more powerful in the millenia that it had been missing, and he had had enough difficulties the first time he had come up against such a being. And even if he did survive, would his mind or heart still be whole? There was every risk that he would be broken, and even dangerous to those whom he held so dear.
But what could he say? What reassurance could he give? Even if he managed to kill the creature, but died in the attempt ... he could return, but no one would know of it, no one would be able to see or hear or even sense him ... save those with the Gift.
In all honesty, he did not know if he would return. He could give Lin no definite answer.
"I do not know," he admitted. "Even ... even if I survive this encounter ... I do not know."
He knew he wanted to, but he knew that he would do whatever was best for those he loved, and if it meant disappearing from their lives and never seeing them again, or coming near them again, then that was what he would have to do.

There was something terrifying to know the person you were talking to was most likely to die. True death was talked about enough, it was a natural thing even if the cause was at times unnatural. Still, death happened, but to know that death was possible for someone who had been around since the beginning, whom like Elros and Sir Valdemar seemed to be untouchable, it was scary.
What do you say to a person who was probably going to die, or just not return?
She stepped forward to get closer, "Then... I hope everything will be alright in the end."
Whatever alright meant... this was akward.
"Uhm.... I know this won't change anything, but it was Christmas a while ago back home, and now is a good time as any to give these to you, because no matter what you have people thinking of you."
She shoved her hand into her bag and pulled the cookie she saved for him but also a small bag of soft lavender colour. It was from Miyu of course it was a seven pointed star, made of crystal cut just so when hung in a window it would make the light split up into small rainbows."

Aragost accepted the cookie and the bag silently, then stood motionless for a moment, deciding what to do first: eat the cookie, or open the bag. The bag won out, for two reasons: first, because it was from Miyu, and he had a special bond with her; and second, because it was a personal gift, and thus had more meaning (though he was also thankful for the cookie).
Not to mention the cookie would last longer this way.
With trembling fingers, he opened the bag and carefully, ever so carefully, pulled out its contents.
The star was beautiful, and it took his breath away. What a gift ...
He cupped the star carefully in both hands and bowed his head to hide his tears, even though his cowl would have done the same thing.
"Tell Miyu," he said softly, "that I will treasure this gift ... and that I will be here for one last visit."
He raised his head slightly and looked at Lin again. "And that I shall do everything in my power to return."

Lin smiled, Aragost had been good for Miyu, and she really hoped he would be able to return.
"I'll tell her," Lin promised, "And thank you."
Thank you for trying to come back, thank you for all he had done and he done a lot. Not just protect the Ranch, while that was important, he had done more than that. He effected the first generation (well most of them) who had come to live here. She nodded slightly with a small smile before leaving.

Lin's visit was a welcome break to the monotony of spring to everyone, yet when she left things returned to normal - or as normal as they ever got. Rhea on the other hand had someone extra to do now - take care of the plant in her room, that was soon going to grow into a cat.
One particular morning, a little over a week after Lin's visit, she came tearing into Cindy's room long before the sun came up.
"CINDY! CINDY!" she exclaimed excitedly. "IT GREW IT GREW! COME AND SEE!!!"
And just as suddenly as she had appeared she zipped back into her own bedroom and pounced onto the desk, giggling at the fluffball that had grown eyes and ears overnight.

Cindy blinked sleepily, did Rhea get up this early just to see how the fluffball turned out or was it for some other reason. She sat up in bed and at a more sedated manner got up, brushed her hair, and changed into day clothes before going to see the newly grown ball of fluff. Which accurately described what it looked like now. It looked like it had been put through a dryer and then given ears and eyes.
She giggled, "Well now she can hear you, and while she can't talk, I know from Saki she can purr."
Though how without a throat was beyond Cindy unless it did have a throat and the mouth was hidden under all that fur.
