She turned to face him, no longer able to hold the tears back. But you should, Valzar. They won't be nice. They'll alter your mind, take control of you. They're strong enough that they don't need the bond to do it. Deep down, though, it's not you I fear for. It's me. Valzar, I'm so selfish. I don't want to leave you. I don't want you to leave me. Everything else I'm so confused about, but I know that for sure.

"Callista..." Valzar slowly edged towards her. "You have nothing to fear," he gently brushed her tears away. "No one will harm you, I can help make sure of that..." He wasn't sure why he was offering her his protection, but it felt like something he had to do - it was important to him.

Callista shook her head. "I can't let you do that. You have so many ponies to protect already. I don't want to be a burden." She was cursing herself on the inside. She wanted to be a burden, but she wanted to be his only burden.

Valzar tiled his head, "What is it?" Even as he asked his mind was already reaching to her, a reaction that seemed natural for some reason. "You worry because I'm not immortal?"

Callista nodded slowly. "I hadn't thought about it until I said it." She was turning ideas over in her head, ways to stop that from happening, or to make it easier, at least.

He nudged her gently, "I am part warlock, thus should have a somewhat longer lifespan than normal ponys. There's no need to worry."
