Ahren grinned and jumped to his feet. "We can go right now if you want!" he offered. "Maybe Shael's still here, too! She can help teach you 'bout the parts of a horse, that's the first thing you have to learn if you want to learn how to ride!"

It was a wonder why Lin wasn't like that too, after all she had someone to teach her, but it could be that she's being taught so many things that it lessen the excitement she would have normally felt.

That or Lin was very single minded at times.

Such as her visit.

"It doesn't have to be now," Lin replied, "We're still visiting, and... I want to know when Halmir will be back," she looked at Arthael, "He's out right?"

She wondered if it was just by himself, or if Arthael was already not allowed to go out and do patrol. If that was the case... she wondered what sort of person was going out with Halmir. She hoped whoever it was Halmir would do patrol's with was a patience person.

Arthael smiled at Lin.

"Halmir will be out until about noon," she told her, "but I should be heading out to join him soon. He's by himself at the moment, but when I'm not there to keep him on task he tends to get a little ... distracted."

The irony was that it wasn't the other way around, but Arthael made sure that business was purely business, and that the pleasure would only come later.

Ahren blinked. "Oh ... I forgot you two were on mornings this week," he said sheepishly, sinking back into his chair. "Um ... I hope we're not keeping you ..."

He knew how important it was for the guards to be out on duty when they were supposed to be. He hadn't forgotten (though he hadn't seen) the slavers that had almost been on the ranch, those years ago.

Lin giggled at that, "Halmir is still Halmir. I remember now."

Then the visit was almost done, maybe she could come back latter and talk to Halmir. When it would be less worrisome in distracting them.

"Okay!"

Arthael smiled and rose to her feet.

"I'll tell you what," she said. "Why don't you give me a minute to get my things together, and then I'll walk the two of you outside? Halmir's in the north today, so I can't walk you to the stables, but I can at least take you to the edge of the building, if you'd like."

Ahren thought it was a pretty good idea, but he was finally thinking about more than just himself, and he looked in Lin's direction before saying anything.

"What do you say?" he asked her, wanting to show how much he had changed now, and letting her make the decision.

"That would be great!" Lin replied.

Then she could spend a bit more time before going to the stables.

Arthael smiled warmly. "Then I'll be right back," she murmured, heading towards the other door that was in the room. "Don't get into trouble now, I won't be long."

And she disappeared into the next room.

Ahren grinned. "I promise!" he agreed; and the moment she was out of sight he sat back down in his chair to make sure that he hadn't made his promise in vain.

"So Lin," he asked, turning to face the girl, "do you really not have horses where you live?"

"Hmm.... no, I've never seen a horse were I live, but we live just outside the city. It wouldn't be too hard to just walk there and that's where most things are. So no one would have to go far."

Besides there were portals as well.

"Weird," Ahren couldn't help but comment. "How do you go places that are far away, then? I mean, places that are too far to walk. Do you have things that are kind of like horses that you can use?"

He couldn't understand it. He had been told how far away his parents' families lived, and he couldn't ever imagine anyone going that far without a horse to ride. It was simply too far to walk!

"Well..." Lin murmured.

She had heard of cars, after all her Daddy owned a van, however she had never really considered it. She had never been in it, and the family never needed to go that far.

"We don't really go to places that far.... there is something but I don't know how it works or anything."

"Oh, okay," Ahren nodded, smiling. "Then you people aren't crazy. Besides, your father's really good at riding, so he has to know how from somewhere before he came here."

Just then the door between the two rooms opened again, and Arthael returned to the two children. She had a bow across her back now, and a quiver, and a long broadsword hung at her waist.

"All right, you two," she smiled at them, "are you ready to go?"
