Elros chuckled softly and squeezed Lin's shoulder one more time before letting go.
"Thank you for your vote of confidence," he said warmly. "Though I will have to see for myself. I am very glad you came today, though," he added, standing once more and taking a bite of the cookie. "I was planning on leaving tomorrow morning ... King Estel and Queen Lothiriel have need of me, of that I am certain."

With the times changing and the fact the government in the Eastland was new... Lin would have to agree and she would like it if both Pen and Lothiriel were safe.
"Then I made it just in time," Lin agreed, "And you're right, they do need you."
She just wished it wasn't so, but she couldn't be selfish.

Elros finished the cookie and brushed his hands together to get rid of the crumbs.
"And how have you been of late?" he asked Lin with a smile. "I'm not sure how long it's been for you, but it's been only a few months here."
He clasped his hands together so that he wouldn't be tempted to pack while talking with Lin. The packing could wait. He wouldn't be seeing his dear friend again for a very long time.

"Well... I've been well overall," Lin murmured thinking about it.
She wasn't sure how to put it, she had good days and bad days, and there were days where she fretted over how things were going here.
"I visited the Southland though, since Elnara and Lore were visiting and had a long stay there," she licked her lips at the thought, "Sir Valdemar should be visiting here to ask Aragost some questions.... if he hasn't already done so."

Elros raised one eyebrow questioningly and turned his full attention on Lin.
"He has not," he said quietly. He paused for a moment, then leaned a little closer to Lin and asked, "Why will he be returning?"
Aragost had given him strict orders not to return ... and of all people, Elros had thought that Sir Valdemar at least would obey his command.

"Sir Valdemar didn't take the message I passed along, about that thing very well. Actually he took it terribly, took out a counterpart book to the large one you and I saw. The one that shows you different places and places in time when read aloud, there was a counterpart book to it..."
She paused for a moment, she tried to not think about that book. She really didn't like thinking about it, and it was amazing she didn't get nightmares afterwards, but then again she purposely kept herself busy, and Christmas holidays did wonders.
"Only it shows, all the bad things in history," she blinked for a moment, "He said, it comes have come back nearly a century ago, when the fortress came back, but no one knows anything else, because the last druid had died shortly after. He's fears it'll get worse, it was a rock troll that was changed by dark magic, and it might eventually be drawn to large amounts of power like Aragost. There are so many unanswered questions about it, no one exactly what happened that day, and the only person who knows is Aragost."

Elros listened curious to Lin's explanation, and as she spoke his expression became more and more confused. As she went on, he shook his head and put his hands on her shoulders.
"Lin, slow down," he told her quietly but firmly. "What book? What fortress? What are you talking about?"
She was going too fast for him and talking about things she didn't know about.

Lin sighed, she was doing it again, and she thought she grew out of it. Did he know? Lin took a deep breath and decided to take the safest route, meaning that Elros didn't know.
"There is a book, that shows the history of the world, not the same book that I talked about when I was little, that you saw too. It is different, it only shows I think the bad things that happened in history," she licked her lips, they were dry, probably because she really didn't like to get into it, "I saw Elros, the creation of the demons, I saw those trees destroyed, saw it, heard it.... the book felt like despair...."
She played with the ribbon that wrapped around her waist as she gathered her thoughts.
"The thing, that you told me about, it was a.. rock troll at one point, I was told because they had intelligence they had the ability for good, but... that wasn't enough. The druids wanted to include everyone when they gathered to research on magic, everyone from each race and they did their research in a fortress, I forgot now where it is.... A rock troll was include, the one most seemly good, but... he transformed himself with magic into that thing and killed all of them. I saw that too, except one. Sir Valdemar said the fortress disappeared suddenly, this was an attempt to stop it from getting out, but it never died. When the fortress was brought back nearly a century ago, so did that thing, and the druid who made the fortress disappear, but the druid died shortly after the fortress was brought back, so what exactly happened that day is unknown."
She swallowed, wishing all for the world things were just.. well normal.
"There is a chance Sir Valdemar said, that it might be drawn to Aragost, because he is powerful, but even if it is not. It's too dangerous to be left roaming, it knows magic, magic that can be learned by anyone, that is why Sir Valdemar is coming here. To talk to Aragost, since he knows everything."

Elros listened grimly to Lin's full explanation, and when she finished he nodded sombrely and sat back once more.
"I see," he sighed. "But ... would it not be wise for him first to seek out the person or persons responsible for bringing the fortress back into the world? It seems to me that they would be the ones to know more about this matter ... yes, Aragost I'm sure would know, but ..."
He frowned. "And yet you also said that you would have to apologize to Aragost ... what for? For this? I see nothing to apologize for here ..."

"Already done," Lin replied, "A letter was sent out, but they might not be able to say much. They were looking for the fortress to find their father, the only other two people in that fortress with that thing, their father and the high druid died moments after the fortress was brought back, and they didn't know that thing was there. No one knew until recently."
She ran her fingers through her hair nervously, it wasn't something she'd like to admit.... but she had to say.
"Apologize for not keeping my promise," she flushed in shame, "I got called in to talk to Queen Atalya, since I brought the message. Sir Valdemar told the Queen that talking to Aragost was the best idea, but I was the one who agreed with him to tell her to truth about Aragost. I know, she wouldn't have understood otherwise, why we felt he was strong and important, and I knew that if this was as serious as Sir Valdemar said it was, Aragost would already be expecting this but..."
She threw up her hands in defeat.
"I still feel badly about this, yes she promised to keep it just between her and her husband, but it doesn't take away the fact she knows who Aragost is, and... I'm afraid he'll go away now."
And she was also slightly afraid of him, but Lin felt that was a normal response to someone like Aragost.

Elros smiled faintly and put one hand on Lin's shoulder, this time to reassure her and hopefully help her to feel better.
"Lin," he said softly, "you did what you felt was needed ... and in this case, you were probably right to do so. It isn't as if you made his identity public knowledge, and it's not as if you did it because you felt like it. This is a life and death situation, and breaking your promise may prove to save many lives - thousands of them, in fact. I am not telling you not to feel guilty ... it is never good to feel nothing when you break a promise. But you must realize that you may not have had a choice."
He squeezed her shoulder gently. "If you would like, I can come with you to apologize to Aragost," he offered. "I may not be able to help you much, but at least you would not be alone."

Lin offered up a small smile to Elros, she would have really liked that, but she really should fess up to it by herself. It was only right, rather than to be like a student who's teacher had caught throwing paper airplanes behind his back, or at least that's the image that came to mind with Elros coming with her.
The fact that she was the height of an elven child only increased that image in her head.
"Thanks, but this is something I should do myself."

Elros smiled and nodded, and rose slowly to his feet.
"Then I wish you all the best," he told her warmly. "And do not be afraid ... I know Aragost can be ... frightening at times, but he has a good heart ... as much as he tries to hide it."
He looked towards the window. "He is just returning from his shift ... he should be here any moment, if you want to wait for him," he offered.

"I'll wait for him," Lin agreed, "And I'll remember that, I mean.. I know he's really nice."
After all she had grown up with him more or less, even had a few lessons from him after hanging around Adan all the time, and that was the only thing that was keeping her from bolting.
Well that and the Christmas presents. She realized also she had forgotten to sit down in all of this, so instead she was ready to head to the door.

Elros smiled sadly. He knew what Lin was going through ... he had gone through it himself at one time. Then again, so did most of the people who called the ancient king their friend.
"Everything will be fine," he murmured softly, sensing even as he spoke that Aragost was coming towards the room. "Now go on, or he'll be in his room already."
