Mercy turned around and decided to walk in a different direction. She seemed to walk for a long time, and yet she encountered nothing. She looked around at the underbrush in dismay, wondering why she was lucky once then just sooo unlucky. It must be a family trait.

She felt that she was still able to find a good mount, so she continued on in the direction she had taking, hoping that sooner or later she would encounter something. Aha! Her luck! She found a tortoise. She quickly begane to devise a plan to tame the beast.

She summoned fear to herself, trying to bend the tortoise to her and make it become her mount. However, the tortoise was able to resist her just an ounce more than she was able to intimidate it. It did not seemed bothered by her at all.

She pictured the fear around her, willing it to help her. She battled wits with the tortoise and found them evenly matched. She still had a chance to tame it though.

She steeled the fear around her. It seemed to work as the tortoise took an uneasy step backwards She smiled and in her mind, Mercy was jumping for joy. She was that much closer to taming this tortoise. However, Mercy shouldn't fool herself, after all the tortoise was able to see past her fear the first time.

She hoped that this was it. She steeled her armor and felt like she was gonig to battle. However, the tortoise was just as powerful. Once again Mercy found herself locked in a battle of fear against the tortoise. Neither she, nor the tortoise was willnig to give up

She was tired of these locks in battle. As she should be. Mercy steeled the fear around herself and finally tamed the tortoise. She walked up to it and gave it a pat on its shell, finally glad to have found a mount. "I shall name you Tortie, and I shall take care of you for now," Mercy said. A smile played upon her lips. Find... a mount? They really were being thrown into this from the basics. But who knew, maybe this would be a good experience for him, maybe his own animal nature would help him... then again, maybe it would be a problem. So Julian followed the rest of his classmates into the forest, ears and eyes trained for sounds or glimpses of other animals in the forest. He thought about flying, getting a higher view of things but somehow that seemed as if he was cheating, or that it just flat out wouldn't work. He hunted better at night...

So far, nothing. He thought he heard the sounds of his classmates in the distance, but around him, no unusual sounds, no signs of other creatures. At least, not yet anyways.

Julian hated walking around... And he wasn't finding anything on the ground, either, so silent as a tomb he spread his wings and launched himself into the air. He didn't go high, maybe only twice his heigh off the ground, but at least he could see better around himself from here.

Ah, he thought he could see tracks or something... So he was back on the ground, walking around, looking. And looking. After a few minutes walking around in circles, he finally sat on a rock, only to have it move. His feathers ruffled in alarm, settling only when he found it was a large tortoise. The horsewomen had said they needed a mount but... But this just didn't seem right. So he decided to move on, trying to find something else.

For a moment, he thought his coat had snagged on a bush or something when he felt the tugging. It did have a number of holes in it, so that wasn't really unusual. Julian turned to free his coat, only to see a... a mountain goat? With a threatening hiss, he jerked his coat free. He thought this might be a more appropriate mount... but it made another attempt at is coat. Yeah, that wasn't going to happen. He jumped away, not coming back to the ground until he was certain he was far away from the goat.

As soon as his feet touched the ground, Julian found himself almost nose-to-noes with a small dragon. Now that was more like it! His feathers fluffed up, making himself look a little bit bigger than he really was as he squared off against the large reptile.

Okay, so his feather display wasn't very intimidating. The dragon's glare was. But he wouldn't back down. Clicking his claws together, Julian narrowed his eyes and hissed a little, not going to give up until he was beaten.

The dragon's head snapped back and Julian could almost tell that it was regarding him in a different light. It took a step back from him, Julian followed equal distance. He hissed again, no change in his behavior from before, feeling stronger, braver. He was standing up to a creature that he would have been terrified of as a first year. At that point he realized that it didn't matter if he tamed the dragon or not, what mattered was that he was improving.
