Jessmet had only observed from the Stands for a short time. The antics of the new queen and the first brown had upset Ailurath so much that her rider had been forced to watch from the low ledge, constantly caressing the little green's eyeridges and whispering to her.

Ailurath had been distressed ever since she'd heard of the rogue candidate touching the still-soft eggs, although she frequently forgot just why she was so worried. Jessmet had been dealing with the stress by withdrawing as much as possible from the Weyr's inhabitants, seeking solace with her dragon.

With the Hatching halfway over and no major mishaps, the pair were finally starting to relax. The queen had Impressed, and Cheoth hadn't tried to keep the candidates away from the eggs. Jessmet let herself scan the small crowd of new riders. Inaari was the only one she recognized immediately, although Rinfala was vaguely familiar. The young woman yawned and leaned against her beloved green, whose eyes had calmed to yellow.

"Perhaps they'll all turn out alright after all," she murmured.

The blue glanced at the girls sharply when someone hollered, but his eyes never stopped swirling blue. It was the only look the Quarter Horse spared the females, however. He lifted himself slowly, taking his sweet time to stretch out in the sand. That wasn't enough. He stretched forward, extending his front limbs as much as possible as he dipped down and yawned, much like a feline would. Pausing again, the brindled blue took a moment to straighten, shake and then, only then, did he start to bumble towards the candidates.

Once he got going, he really didn't stop. He glanced up now and then until he finally found one boy in particularly. Hmm. He lifted himself up to inspect the boy and, deeming him The Boy, the blue finally began to speak.

Jiskenmine! That was fun, wasn't it? Now, your Bayarth is actually really very hungry. I wanted to stay, but I think it's time to eat now. Don't you agree?

Late didn't begin to cover it.

When Sen shouted she jerked and looked towards the sound. Had she been fading? When had the two browns left the sands? And Kess was looking around, but the blue was still there, lazily watching everyone.

Resting her head on Kess's shoulder with a heavy sigh, Uuni watched the blue. He seemed no more interested to be here than, say. . . well. . . with a look around the room, it seemed quite a lot of people were anxious for the rest of the eggs to hatch.

The weariness definitely showed on everyone. Ignoring it for a while, Uuni moved her gaze back to the blue. She didn't move much, or say much, which was probably why it didn't even occur to her that things were blurring and her consciousness slipped away to make room for sleep.

Hopefully Kess's shoulder could take a little more weight, although Uuni had slept mostly standing before so there was hardly any risk of toppling over.

Firyal bit back another yawn as she applauded wearily for Jisken. She remembered he'd made an afternoon of dishes enjoyable for her, though they hadn't seen much of each other since then. She was happy for him, though. She wasn't sure if she recalled correctly, but he might have been the person she spoke to who had been at another Weyr before coming to Ista. Or maybe it had been that he intended to try his luck at another Weyr? At any rate, his luck had finally turned it seemed, and she was genuinely glad for him.

"Good for you," she said softly. She made no attempt to catch the former Tanner's gaze because she knew that his dragon would be all-consuming, but she felt she had to say something, even if she and her immediate neighbors were the only ones to hear it. So much for the No Talking on the Sands rule. It did seem to support the theory that being mauled made you more attractive to dragons, though. Maybe there was some hope for her.

But now there were only a few eggs left, and her chances of Impressing were dwindling rapidly. Her gaze settled automatically on the black egg that seemed to collect shadows, but she knew it was idiotic to get attached to any one egg and forced herself to look at the others, too. Between deliberately aggravating her injuries and finding different things to look at she could probably make it to the end of the Hatching and remain conscious the entire time. It would certainly be pathetic if she survived a mauling but then succumbed to something as mundane as weariness.

Oooh! The pretty blue had impressed to one of the boys (then again, wasn't that more common than impressing to one of the girls?)! Yet again, a boy she didn't recognize either. Alas, Alanna didn't exactly know much of ANYBODY that was around to be excited for.

She just knew who she DIDN'T want to impress.

Which with her luck was bound to happen anyways. fjsa;dlkf. That would suck.

Hard. Because he'd rub it riiight in her face. Guh.

It was odd to watching a Hatching from the Stands, O'asis decided. Like seeing a piece of his life he'd moved on from, but still recognized as his own. He wondered if he'd looked so foolhardy and nervous, standing in those white robes and sweating under the heat. He remembered how he'd felt, anyway - the memory was already getting hazy, especially when compared with the burst of joy that came with remembering that moment where Uktenath came to him, but he felt a solemn sympathy with the Candidates still on the Sands, watching the last couple eggs, wondering if they were to be left waiting again for Theirs.

His eyes wandered from the Sands then, and he saw (at last!) the person he'd been most tentative, but sure, about seeing. His lips pressed together, and he considered what to do. She hadn't seen him - better to sit with his eyes on the eggs, and pretend he hadn't noticed? It would avoid something awkward, for sure, but he hadn't ever taken himself to be such a coward. She was his friend - a dimglow, maybe, but....

"I'll catch up with you at Feast," he murmured quickly to S'van, rising from where he sat. It was well past time he'd gotten a chance to speak with Kyllae again, after all.

He made his approach careful, but confident. Not calling any needless attention with a loud greeting, but firm in his belonging as he picked out a spot near the once-Dolphineer - not so hard to get, since the crowds were mysteriously less packed around her, despite the overpopulation of the Weyr. "Thank Faranth - looks like a fairly smooth Hatching, doesn't it?" he asked mildly.

Ollen watched the blue as he stood and looked one of the boys she did not know in the eyes. Do many dragons impress on their hind legs, do they have to look into your face, she chuckled, she would need a very tall dragon to be able to look her in the eyes and impress. Turning to the remaining eggs she wondered if they would hatch, everything has moved pretty smoothly besides the horrendous queen and brown. Had the girl touched them too early
really do anything? She hoped the rest of the hatching would go on without a hitch, and that they would stay nice quiet impressions instead of vicious ones.

What a first Hatching to experience, she had never seen a hatching from the stands and now she was seeing it from one of the best vantage points possible, right up front, close and personal.

Another lull descended upon the sands, it seemed. Jaid shifted from foot to foot restlessly. The sands were so warm and the hours were drawing on and on...ah, with breaks in the activity, it wasn't hard to nearly nod off standing up! But the worry he'd miss anything if he dozed off (or would get trampled by an active dragonet) kept Jaid alert.

But then more eggs started shaking! First, another blue emerged from its egg, taking its time as it explored the sands. Two more followed shortly after- a pair of browns. One brown Impressed quite quickly. Next, the blue Impressed...to Jisken, no less! The poor boy had been mauled, but it seemed that this more than made up for it! Jai would have to catch up with Jisken after the Hatching and both ask if he was alright and congratulate him on Impressing. He turned his attention back to the remaining roving brown. He doubted it would look to him- he didn't think he was quite the right material for a brown- but he was still curious as to whom it would select as its Bonded.

Santhea yawned, and tried to smile at the same time, producing an incredibly creepy effect. She finished the yawn, almsot laughing, and grinned her congratulations at the new rider, though inside she felt kinda sad. Well, alot sad. She had seriously doubted that the blue had wanted her, just a lowly weyrbrat, but she couldn't stop that little blossom of hope. She felt jealous, but tried to clamp down on that - it was an ugly feeling, and would only make her bitter.

This was a time for celebration, and Santhea would do that.. but shards, it was late, and there were still eggs on the sands - not even a crack yet! Her mother was sure to be in a bad mood - the cooks had worked the day making the delicious feast, but by now it was most likely dry and spoilt.. though who could stay up to party after such a day, Santhea had no idea.

She fixed her gaze on the remaining eggs, noticing again the mottled one - albeit through eyes half closed.. she thought wryly. She could see other candidates being propped up by their friends, half of them unconscious! It was intensely funny, or maybe the lack of sleep had made Santhea hysterical, but she couldn't help but chuckle quietly. She folded her knees and sat on the sands, determined to wait for the eggs to crack - she stood just as much a chance from here, surely!

The blue finally made a move, and Jisken watched curiously, somewhat amused by his relaxed way of moving about. The dragon took his time, was most certainly in no rush whatsoever, and only after a painstakingly long-lived stretch did the dragon approach the boys, taking quick one-overs of each of them. Jisken surely thought that there would be some sort of hesitation, some mental bond with one of the boys preceding him, but once the dragon was moving, it was nothing more than a quick look, and then to the next.

And then there was a pause, and the dragon raised himself up, surely to inspect the boy just behind Jisken. Jisken looked back to see who the lucky candidate was, but found that, nearing the end, everyone seemed to have spaced out. Then just who was the blue looking at--

Jiskenmine! That was fun, wasn't it? Now, your Bayarth is actually really very hungry. I wanted to stay, but I think it's time to eat now. Don't you agree?

Jisken's head turned slowly to face the whirling eyes of the blue, and for a moment he simply blinked, unable to register the bond that had just been formed. Was that...was that really a dragon's voice in his head? Had he, of all people, been chosen?

Yes, mine, you were. Can we eat now? Please? Bayarth tilted his head curiously, then nudged his partner gently. Only then did Jisken (now J'ken, he supposed) somewhat snap out of it, his eyes widening as he reached out a hand, lightly petting the blue on his eye-ridges.

"Y-yes, Bayarth, we can eat now," the boy said, leading the blue towards the feeding area, his spirits lifted. Before he'd left the Sands entirely, though, he glimpsed back to the other Candidates, to Firyal and Jaidev. He could only hope that they, too, would join him soon.

Wait. Wait, what? O'asis was abandoning S'van for her? The reason for S'van's loathing was entirely clear, and had very little to do with her touching of the eggs. Right. Nice of him to leave S'van with his rather despised cousin. ... Not that O'asis seemed to know about that, but... "Right," he said, after Kas had already gone. He shot a half-hearted glare at the girl in question, watching the two together. Who did she think she was, anyway? That was the trouble with women. They got between friends. ... Or maybe he was being too sensitive about it. With a faint, nearly inaudible sigh, he settled back in to watch the Hatching.

It was not as though he could ever really hold anything against his friend anyway, and... well, Kyllae needed the attention. It had to be pretty lonely being her right now. Still, he wished that the man who had gone to keep her company had been someone else. Someone not Kas. He'd waited some time for the Bronzerider to show up, only to have him wander off again. ... But hey, he could catch up with Inaari later, and M'al, and that would be more fun than sitting around and moping over something which by all rights should not trouble him. What did it matter anyway? They were roommates, and he'd see Kas again soon. He cheered for the latest Impressed pair, and watched in silence after that point.

Kyllae remained relatively motionless, only turning her head a little, relief exceptionally appearant in her eyes, once she realized just who it was who was adressing her. Thank goodness, she wasn't in the mood to be harassed or bothered right now. She was tired, anxious, and in desperate need of the relaxing she hadn't been able to do for quite a few sevendays.

"Thank Faranth indeed," she whispered, a smile just barely tickling the corners of her mouth. It was exceptionally hard to be happy and joyful, considering just how much of her future hung in the balance right now. "Though considering some of their temperments, I would say it's fairly obvious their Cheoth's spawn." And how Kyllae dreaded the fact that people would be quick to blame all of the faults on her, even if it was wrong. That angry little queen...her agression would have resulted in a mauling, touching or not. It wasn't a case of candidates not getting away fast enough, it was almost like the queen attacked them. Kyllae would be damned if she would take the fall for something like that.

"I hope Uktenath is well?" she ventured, not quite sure what O'asis wanted out of her at the moment. They hadn't seen each since...the hospital. And hadn't spoken since Kyllae'd made the biggest mistake of her life.

Finally, it seemed like the delayed blue had made his choice-- a boy, as could only be expected of the color. It was a peaceful, quiet impressions: the kind people always hoped and prayed for, and once again, she breathed a soft sigh over it. Sans the first couple of angry spitfires, it seemed like the dragonets were all more or less content to just find their people and be done with it... which was good, no doubt, for everyone.

The lack of drama had given her luxury enough to glance back, as it were, to someone else-- Goran, or... well, it was G'ran now, wasn't it?

He seemed almost dumbfounded by the sudden realization of his own fortune, jolting as if a fire had just been lit in front of him... and then... then he was trailing after the little dragon, shaking his head, speaking in rough excitement... and smiling. Smiling.

That was definitely the first time she'd seen anything like cheerfulness about him, huh.

But oh-- oh, she needed to applaud for the blue too. For a moment she almost felt foolish for the delay, but quickly picked up on it and wiped any dazedness off her face. That wouldn't do, looking so lost and out of it. She needed to focus until the very end.

"Getting big fast," O'asis agreed, seeming exceptionally relaxed and merry despite all that hung around them. It was probably just as well that he hadn't noticed S'van glaring - ignorance was generally bliss, when two friends stood at odds. He went on blithely: "And Argent, too - the firelizard egg you gave me, you know, hatched a few sevenday ago! Prettiest blue you've ever seen. I'll see if I can coax him out at Feast."

But now was the time where bits of guilt began slipping out. Always in little things - darting glances, anxious smiles, fingers rubbing against cloth. "I wish I could've shown him to you before now, actually. Been a bit busy, but that's not any real excuse. Are you doing okay?" He'd really meant to ask, how are you - but true meanings tended to spill out in the details. O'asis didn't bother covering it up, either, but just stumbled into an elaboration - "I mean, I know you probably want to be down there, not up here...."

Mine, Ianquith is distressed. Will you go to her? I do not like that my Lady is sad. Your lady? She is a Lady, and she is my friend, the Brown pointed out, as though it was very obvious why he had called her that. ... All right. Getting to his feet, S'van shook Vera's hand off. "Vera, I'm going to go see a friend of mine, all right?" A friend whose dragonet was unhappy, if his dragon were to be believed. ... Which he probably should be, really. S'van had yet to encounter a situation in which Gall had lied to him or stretched the truth. Honestly, any excuse to go be social away from that female was a good one.

"S'van, you wherry," Vera said, rolling her eyes as the lad made his way to J'riar. S'van ignored her, of course. S'van delighted in ignoring his older cousin. "J'ri! Hoy, I didn't see you there!" It was ironic, really. J'riar hadn't been far away at all. It was really kind of surprising that he hadn't at least heard him, but then again J'riar did tend to be more mellow than most of his friends. Mellow tended to translate into quiet. Ianquith, are you well? Galliath inquired delicately, concern coloring his tone slightly. The poor darling had no doubt been scared by the little Queen on the Hatching Sands.
