Lin blinked up at Haradhel, absently handing the cookie to Arahad. She wondered why, or did that mean it was possible he was going to leave. After all it would have been impossible for Elros to leave with it being winter and having to return the children.

"Really?" she murmured.

Maybe Elros was going to go to the Eastland....

"I will," Lin nodded.

"Good," Haradhel nodded approvingly. "Because it might be the last chance you have."

Just then, the workers from the garden arrived, seven men and women all dirty and sweating from their work. Most of them were wiping their hands on any clean part of their clothing, and they all sat down in the shade around Haradhel, Arahad and Lin, leaning against the wooden walls of the barracks and leaning their heads back, relaxing in the coolness of the shade.

"I should have figured that," Lin murmured waving at the workers who were arriving.

She supposed that meant they knew the answer now, she wondered who was going to look after the fighters after he was gone. It couldn't be Aragost, not with everything going on and people were a bit edgy on him.

"Should I have left the cookies on a table like last time," she murmured to Haradhel, "The snow last time made it so I couldn't go far."

Haradhel laughed at Lin's expression of chagrin. "Why don't you give them to me," she suggested, "and then you can go off and find everyone you want to talk to personally? No one would blame you for wanting to find Elros, everyone knows how much time you like to spend with him ... and he's rather fond of you, too, which is rare. He never shows emotions to anyone, except you."

She smiled easily at Lin and held out her hand.

"Everyone says that..." Lin murmured.

She took out the bag of cookies keeping two for the people she was going to talk to before leaving. Handing them over to Haradhel carefully, there were a lot of extras because Lin had been aware the problem with snowflakes was that she was afraid of them breaking.

"I can't imagine Elros like that."

Haradhel laughed at that as she took the cookies carefully. "How can you not? Don't you remember what he was like when you first came here? You were riding in your father's coat pocket, such a tiny little thing ... and yet when you were introduced he didn't even blink, didn't change expression at all ... as if you were the most normal thing in the world!"

She laughed again. "Thanks for the cookies," she grinned at Lin. "I'll make sure that everyone gets one."

In retrospect Lin was very young back then and she never took it amiss that Elros never blinked at seeing her. After all Halmir didn't, granted Halmir was.. interesting as a person.

"I never thought of it that way," she admitted, "Looking back on it, I know what you mean..."

She stood up brushing the dirt off the back of her pants.

"Thanks for helping Haradhel," Lin smiled.

Haradhel laughed. "No need to thank me, just go!" she grinned. "Go on, I'm sure Elros will be very happy to see you. Just make sure you come and say goodbye before you leave again."

She winked at Lin, then turned towards the gardeners to hand out the cookies that Lin had brought for them.

Lin grinned before doing as Haradhel said, going around the barracks to the door. After all this time she was use to the pitch black darkness that was the inside of the barracks, as she put a hand against the wall and headed towards the stairs.

She had forgotten to ask she realized, whether if Elros or Aragost was out on shift at the moment. She hoped they weren't... Lin counted the doors as her fingers glided past them and knocked against Elros' door.

Elros was indeed in his quarters, window wide open to let in the warmth and the sunshine, as well as the cool breeze that made the warmth comfortable. He was not unoccupied, as always: his desk was covered in the books and papers that were normally on his bookshelf, all of it stacked neatly, and on his bed were mounds of clothes and cloaks. His weapons were on the counter on the far wall, lain out and sorted according to size.

He was packing.

But at the sound of the knock, he paused in his work and turned to the door. He wondered briefly who it was. It was far too soon for Donovan to have returned for another hunt ...

Silently, he gripped the door handle and pulled the door open.

"Lin," he murmured in surprise, his eyes softening and the corners of his lips turning up in a faint smile. "I am glad to see you ... come in."

And he moved aside to give her the space she needed.

Lin stepped in, she saw all of the clothes, the weapons and the books. She was glad she had made the choice to go now, and she was very grateful she had an excuse to go early. A hand slipping into her bag she pulled out a cookie and presented to Elros.

"Merry Christmas," she told him, "I don't think... I gave you a candy cane myself, but at least I made it in time to give you a cookie instead."

Elros took the cookie carefully, and a sad expression crossed his face. He fell to one knee and put his arms around Lin's back, pulling her close for a tight hug. His brow was furrowed deeply in sadness, and it was a long time before he even let his arms relax.

"Lin," he murmured, almost in a whisper, and his voice was filled with pain. "I am going to miss you ..."

Lin lowered her eyes a bit and hugged Elros back, so it was very much true that he would leave.

"But I can visit you right?" she asked.

Then again she wasn't even sure of what Elros was going to be doing while he was there.

Elros chuckled softly and put one hand on Lin's shoulder.

"As often as you like," he told her with a warm smile. He rose to his feet again and squeezed her shoulder gently. "I will look forward to your visits ... for a while they may be the only familiar thing that I will have in my life. I have never commanded an army before ... nor have I served under a monarch. It will be a whole new experience for me ..."

He only wished he knew how it would go.

That was true, Lin was going to have to bother her brothers for a portal, she wasn't going to want to make Elros wait years for a visit. She grinned up at Elros, happy that she could at least visit him.

"I'm glad, well for the part where I can visit you, though... I'm sure you're going to do well Elros."
