500 years ago, the great demon king, Gyomaoh, was imprisoned in his castle. Since then, humans and demons have been able to coexist in peace and harmony. However, in the present a group of demons are attempting to free him and eliminate the humans. One of their experiments goes wrong and sends out a mysterious force known as the "minus wave". Suddenly, demons all over the world begin to go insane, removing their power limiters and attacking humans like monsters.

As a result, the gods send Priest Sanzo, a cussing, smoking, gun-toting priest and his disciples (their actually his friends, but he calls them "slaves") Goku, Gojyo, and Hakkai to gather the 5 sacred scriptures, known as "sutras" and use them to stop the revival of Gyomaoh.

The Group

Each with their own tragic past, the Saiyuki cast is probably the toughest group of guys you'll ever find in a manga created by a woman. But behind their rock hard exterior, these men are also very deep, fully developed characters. The heart of the story lies in the tight bonds between them, ties that stretch deep into each of the character's sheltered hearts and tortured pasts. So, when describing this manga, it is always important to emphasize that the group as a whole is really a character in itself.



Genjyo Sanzo


A very brutal, worldly priest. He's looking for the sacred scripture of his late master, Koumyou Sanzo. He's egotistical, haughty, and has zero sense of humor, but this handsome 23-year-old hero also has calm judgement and charisma. His favorite phrases are "Die" and "I'll kill you". His main weapons are the Maten Sutra, a handgun, and a paper fan for idiots. He's 5' 10" and is often noted for his drooping purple eyes.
















Son Goku

A brave, cheerful Monkey King of legend; an unholy child born from the rocks where the aura of the Earth was gathered. His brain is full of thoughts of food and games. To pay for crimes he committed when we was young, he was imprisoned in the rocks for five hundred years, during which was alone and never ate nor aged. Because of his optimistic personality, he's become the mascot character of the group: this 18-year-old of superior health is made fun of by Gojyo, yelled at by Sanzo, and watched over by Hakkai. He's 5'4" and his main weapon is his Nyou-bo, a magical staff which can transform into many different types of staffs.

















Sha Gojyo

Gojyo is a lecherous kappa (water demon). His behavior may seem vulgar and rough at first glance (and it is), but to his friends he's like a dependable older brother. He and Goku are sparring partners, he and Hakkai are best friends, and he and Sanzo are....well they hate each other's guts (sort of). Sometimes his love for the ladies gets him in trouble. Because of his unusual heritage, he doesn't need a limiter to blend in with the humans. His favorite way of fighting is to use his shakujou, a staff with a crescent shaped blade connected by a chain; it's quite messy. He's 6', has scarlet hair and eyes, which he despises, and is a 22 year old chain smoker

















Cho Hakkai

A pleasant, rather absent-minded young man with a kind smile that suits him nicely. It's sometimes hard to tell whether he is serious, or if he's laughing to himself at his friends' expense. His darker side comes through from time to time in the form of his sharp, penetrating gaze, a symbol of his dark past. He is responsible for driving the Jeep, since the Jeep is actually a his pet dragon Hakuryuu, who as the power to transform into a Jeep. Because he uses Chi manipulation in battle, the others joke that his "weapon" is his smile. He's 22 years old, 5'11", and his eyes are a deep green. (His right eye is nearly blind due to events in his past.) The cuffs he wears on his left ear are youkai power limiters.
