Ahren leaned his head forward so that his hair would cover his face, but he was listening intently to what Lin and Arthael were saying. He wanted to pretend that he was ignoring them, though, so he made no indications that he might have heard them.

Lin grinned, she knew this would be good, "Okay! Besides, really I am here to see you and Halmir, I would have yesterday, but.... I lost track of time with Elros."

She barely made it back, and she ran all the way back to the Ranch house too.

Arthael chuckled softly. "Aye, I'd heard about that. He does enjoy spending time with you, so I think we can forgive him keeping you all to himself yesterday, hm?"

She motioned for Lin to sit down. "Drink?" she offered.

Lin took a seat shaking her head, "No thanks, I just had breakfast. So, I'm not actually thirsty."

Though it was a nice thought, she looked over to Ahren.

"Maybe he wants a drink?"

Ahren didn't care about where he was, or who he was with, or about what his father had said to him before they had come out here: all he cared about was that he wasn't allowed to go anywhere or do anything, and all he wanted was to wallow in his misery and not be bothered by anyone else.

So when Lin suggested that perhaps he might like a drink, he glared over his shoulder at her and snapped, "No I don't, why don't you just leave me alone!"

For a moment, there was silence, but a look of fierce anger flashed across Arthael's scarred face, and her single violet eye glinted furiously. She strode over to where he was sitting, and her hand darted in close to him, close enough that she was able to grab a handful of his tunic and lift him from his chair.

She had softened somewhat since becoming pregnant, but it was a mistake to think that she would put up with attitudes or actions like his, especially when they were not deserved.

"Do you have something you would like to say?" she growled at him, holding him so high that his feet were dangling above the chair.

"Uhm....."

Lin had never seen Arthael like this, even though she knew the woman could be upset. After all look at Halmir, but Halmir was a special case.

"It's okay Arthael, I mean.... he just needs to be more sweet."

"You're damn right he does," Arthael agreed with Lin, still glaring at the boy. "But you're also wrong - it's not all right."

She lifted the boy a little closer to her face. "I know for a fact that your parents brought you up far better than the way you're acting," she told him. "You think you're old enough to go on the hunts, don't you? Always trying to sneak along. You think you're strong enough. Smart enough. Ruthless enough. But do you want to know something?"

Her eye narrowed as she looked at him. "Your actions are proving the exact opposite of what you want. You're showing that your sister, even Adanedhel, even the twin, who are so many years younger than you - are more grown up than you are. You want to go with someday? Grow up. Smarten up. Don't be so pathetic."

Ahren's defiant expression had long since disappeared, and now he looked nothing more than terrified.

"Lemme go," he squeaked, grabbing Arthael's arm and squirming to escape her grasp - but her grip was iron tight.

Lin wasn't as scared as Ahren, but then again she wasn't on the dangling end of it all. Though it gave her a rough idea how angry Arthael was, after all she had never heard the woman use an adult word before.

Maybe he should say sorry.

"If I let you go," Arthael growled, lowering the boy slightly (though he was still dangling), "then you have to start growing up, right this minute. That means you apologize to Lin for being rude to her, you apologize to me for trampling on my hospitality, you lose your selfish, ignorant attitude, and accept the fact that you have been forbidden to join the hunts until you are both old enough and have completed your training. You don't sulk when you're told you can't go, you don't whine and complain, you don't take your anger out on others, and you sure as hell don't act the way you are right now."

Ahren's body was beginning to ache from the prolonged hanging, and he whimpered and nodded vigorously. "I will!" he promised in a squeak. "Just put me down!"

Lin blinked watching the two, and made a note to never make Arthael angry. Though it looked like he wasn't going to be grumpy anymore at least.... That should make Elrohir happy.

Arthael nodded and let go of the boy, letting him fall to the chair where he had been sitting. Then she folded her arms across her chest and waited.

Ahren flopped in the chair, then looked up at Arthael, his expression still frightened. Then he clambered to the floor and knelt in front of Lin, bowing his head so far forward that his forehead actually hit the floor.

"I'm sorry!" he exclaimed. "You really were nice to me today, you even gave me a candy, and I was grumpy and mean to you! I'm sorry!"
